How odd ??? ???
I know I have a couple of W names on the table.
Must be a glitch in the system. ::) ::)

I went to the SIT to check some surnames, clicked on SURNAME SEARCH, then the first letter of the particular surname, "P" - and got the message "no entries for P" - bit strange I thought, then I checked some more letters and found no entries for D, R, O, N, M, P, V, X, Y and Z.
Any idea what's going on?

Hi Ruskie
I'm sure Berlin Bob will be able to solve this quickly. It happened a couple of weeks ago when the W disappeared :o :o
Kerry
-
Thanks Kerry - I thought my computer was playing up, or I was doing something wrong when I first noticed it.
-
Still having problems ??
I just looked, and everything is there ???
Bob
-
Does seem to be working for me too now Bob. ::) ::) ::) Must have been one of those moments, bit like the error messages I was getting yesterday everytime I tried to come onto Rootschat.
How about you Ruskie??
Kerry
-
Perfect thanks!
-
...doesn't seem to be working!
Keep going there to be told there are 0 names beginning with D.
meles
Added - or G!

You are right Meles and I know there are some there, I have a couple!
They show on my interests but just not searching on alphabet.
Kerry
-
I know "why" it's happening, but not (yet) how to cure it ::)
the letters are sometimes being translated to lower-case and the program is searching for upper-case.
That's why it's happening.
But why the upper-case letter is suddenly transformed to lower-case ......
I don't what the problem is there ???
I'm working on it, and will no doubt find an answer soon ...

Ah! Computers! Don't you love 'em?
Cheers, Bob.

-
I have made a correction, but we won't know till tomorrow, whether it's working ......
-
We'll keep our fingers crossed that it's sorted out, Bob. I'm starting to feel like it could be my fault because I added so many names the other day before this happened but of course that's nonsense- isn't it?
-
Well, all those capital letters you put in obviously overloaded the computer, and it made them small, so it could cope.
Or not! ;D
meles
-
Surnames beginning with 'G' missing today :o
-
It's working! Thank you, Bob - what a star! ;D

-
I merged markheal's topic with this, so it looks like Meles was a bit too fast with the praise.
I've corrected G (and I) by hand, but I still don't know why the crucial variable is sometimes upper-case (correct) and sometimes lower case (wrong).
Totally random, too ... tomorrow G will probably be OK but maybe another letter won't be :'( :-[ :o

Is anyone else having problems with the surname database on this site? the letters 'T and K' seem to be missing.

Yes - there have been problems tht the moderators have been trying to fix. They've been working hard and I'm sure it'll be fine tomorrow.

Thanks, I'll try and be patient. ::)

Hi
Sorry but It worked alright for me

Or G and a few of the obscure ones I X Y
But the rest of it seems OK ;D
Rosie

They are all there today - well no X's but that is probably to be eXpected ::)

Sorry All, this is a recurring problem and I have no solution :(
At midnight (UK time) the surname list is updated and sometimes it misses out letters.
Usually the missing letter is there again after the following midnight, but then another letter is missing ..... ::)
Not 100% sure, but it may have started after we had 65535 names in the table.
Anybody who knows anything about computers will recognise that number as being (computer) significant.
Now and then, when I have a bit of time, I have another look at the program
but I haven't found anything yet *Grrrrh !!*
Bob
ps just looked in the database and they are all there, apart from X and that has it's reasons:
there are no RootsChatters searching for for people who's surnames start with X ;D
(although there are 83 starting with Y and 27 starting with Z)
-
Thanks Bob,and at least the offending letter's entries are there now.

Drats!
"G" has gone again - and I was hoping to find someone searching the same family as one of mine - the family of God :D
Actually looking for Greensmith but seem to have just as much luck with either ::)
Oh well Bob - at least the reoccurring "challenges" keep you out of mischief for a while!!
;D ;D
-
G is now visible again ... I reset it
-
Now that's what I call service - with a smile ;D
Thanks Bob - off to look for some of my GG's :D
Di
-
Please Bob :-* :-*
would you mind resetting the "P" on the SIT table
It's gone a'wandering again ;D
Thanks
Di
-
done :)
-
Thank you kindly
:)

Your playing a blinder Bob!F is working now!

Hi Bob
Could you please reset the F on the surnames interests :)
Thanks
Rosie
-
Could a moderater take a look at the "B" surnames please.
They are not in alphabetical order.
Spring
-
I guessed you were referring to surnames in the SIT so I had a look:
http://surname.rootschat.com/sit-surnames.php?letter=B
I'll try to find time in the next few days to fix it.
Bob
-
Thank you Bob.
Spring
-
Working fine now - I just snarled at it and it behaved ;D
Seriously though, this is one of these "occasional errors" that crop up now and then.
Sometimes there will be no entries for a particular letter one day, and they will all be back the next day.
e.g.: Topic: Problem with surname search beginning with ....
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,350829.0.html
Makes it very hard to find the cause of it as I can't reproduce the errors :(
regards,
Bob
-
Is the surnames list being Updated or Re-organised? But all the "N" surnames have disappeared today.

strange indeed - and nothing in the 'News' banner ... :(
-
No Os either ???
-
Four candles?
-
That made me laugh..LOL... poor Ronnie up and down the ladder ;D :)
-
Lots of Ps though :)
-
It happens now and then appearently- if you look at some of the other threads on this board you'll see the missing bits seem to change.

-
Och, Aghadowey - and there were we hoping that Bob would come on and do a two Ronnies for us :-\
;D
-
We will all have to watch our "Peas" and Queues
-
No, I'm SITting this one out ;D
-
The B and L listings are out of alphabetical order at the moment, at least they're there and isn't a major hiccup, just thought I'd mention it :) mare
-
I can't search the S it says no enteries ??? ???
Ambers
I modified this post due to a mistake I made ::)
Moderator Comment: topics merged
-
Just tried it and indeed S is not working Rootschat.
-
This happens now and then. It is such a difficult error to reproduce that I haven't been able to find a cure for it (yet)
But if you wait till midnight (UK time) it will probably be working again.
I've merged this topic with another about the same problem.
Bob
-
Many thanks Bob, :D
I didn't realise it was a recurring problem. Still 25 out of 26 is not bad ;)
Will try again to-morrow.

Why do the Surnames beginning with L apparently end with Leyden?
Regards
William Russell Jones.
Moderator Comment: topics merged
-
Looks as though K and W may also be missing the latter part of the alphabet.
-
Ours is not to reason why I suppose!
Regards
William Russell Jones.
-
It gets hiccups now and then, usually it's alright 24 hours later :)
-
I have just had a search for a name i added, TRANMAR, the "T" appears to be non alphabetical ?
