Hello...

The following probate may mention where Esther is in 1870. Possibly start a look-up request thread

READE Redmond - Taiharuru - Husband of Esther - 1870

Hi again...

The 1881 electoral roll has a Henry EVANS, labourer living in Kawakawa (which is fity-ish miles north of Taiharuru). Maybe Esther's second husband. Maybe not.

And there is an Ernest ALfred READER buried at Omaka Cemetery in Blenheim but I suspect it's a different person because there's a ten year age difference. Maybe start a digitisation request thread for his WW1 file which might/should list his parents.

READER, Ernest Alfred - WW1 80379 - Army -1914 - 1918
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=20804537

Actually, how likely is it for a 46 year old to have served in WW1....so maybe don't bother :-)

Hello,

Interested to know if you found anything useful on the WW1 file for Ernest Alfred READER?? Were you able to establish as to whether or not he was one and the same as Ernest Alfred READE?

Was the name of the Reader wife, Mary Lilian?

Apart from the possible WW1 file there appears to be no trace of the READE name relating to Ernest.

However Snook, have you looked in Australia for Ernest Alfred READE?

One item comes up in the Australian newspapers (trove.nla.gov.au) for Ernest A. Reade. Appears in the 'Bendigo Advertiser' dated 10.7.1900 when he was a patient in Bendigo Hospital.

A search of the historical index www.bdm.vic.gov.au/ shows there is a death record for an Ernest Alfred READE. Without payment however, it is not possible to obtain further information.

But maybe not.......... Have you looked for Esther Evans death?

I see two possible candidates from the NZ BDM website index:

1908, aged 78 years &
1917, aged 84 years.

Both within the range of Esther's birth date, abt. 1831. A death printout may well have details of her parentage.

Hi Snook

The above-named Ernest Alfred READER would seem to be an entirely different person to Ernest Alfred READE.

Ernest Alfred READER - farm hand of Blenheim - Regimental No. 80379, lists his wife > Mrs. E. READER , of Meehan Street, Islington, Blenheim > as his next of kin.
[Electoral Rolls (for Marlborough district) covering a good number of years, show this man living at the Meehan Street address with his wife who is named as Elizabeth.]

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

"Marlborough Express" - 3 March 1904 - page 3

... has a report on the wedding of Ernest Alfred READER - the son of Mr William READER, of Fairhall, Blenheim ... to, Elizabeth TEE.

NZ Birth

The burial (mentioned here earlier) at Omaka Cemetery, Blenheim - 1941 - would appear to be the same E.A. READER.

Hi again Snook

Just so we can try to help with finding info for the people you asked about in your initial post ...

>  do you maybe have later information (after 1879) for Esther ??

I'm just curious, because if you are working backwards in the usual manner, (and you don't have details of Esther's son Ernest Alfred READE - other than his birth), then it would seem that you have possibly traced back from Esther ?

Hi Snook

Sorry, I don't want to confuse you.  :)   But I do want to "un-confuse" myself.   ;D

Usually when we do our family histories, we work backwards from a known person e.g. let's say a great-grandfather named Ernest Alfred READE.   Then we find out who his parents were (his marriage cert. is generally the best source of information).   And from that we learn the names of his parents ... say Esther and Redmond.

So, do you already have an "Ernest Alfred" in your tree ?

Hi Snook

I've done a comprehensive search of NZ (and some Australian) records, and haven't been able to find Ernest Alfred READE (and var.) or EVANS, sorry.   :(

If he had remained in New Zealand, then you'd expect him to probably show up on Electoral rolls from 1890.

While I have access to images for NZ electoral districts, 1893 is not amongst them unfortunately so am unable to view the earlier reference you gave for EVANS at Sarsfield Street, Auckland.

>   Did that (1893) roll show Esther and Henry EVANS at Sarsfield Street ?

Hi Snook

Somebody has a tree (online @ ancestry website) which mentions Redmond READE - 1829-1869 born Kilkenny, Ireland.

The entry for his wife, Esther LAWRENCE, only shows she was born about 1831.

The child named as the son of Redmond and Esther, is listed as >>

Redmond READE - Birth:  1868 - Taiharuru

[Obviously that listing does not tally with what is recorded in the NZ Birth Index.
The tree seems only to follow the line of Redmond READE (b. 1829) and his Irish roots. ]

Hello,

1874 birth for Henry Embling EVANS was reg. March quarter @ Turanga.

1875 death for the above-named was reg. March quarter @ Turanga.

1876 birth for unnamed female was reg. March quarter @ Turanga.

Turanga was (I think) the old name for Gisborne, Poverty Bay. If not the old name, Turanga was certainly in the Gisborne area.

This pinpoints the location of Esther &  Henry during those years.

I recently started researching my grandfather's family, Reades of Kilkenny. My great grandfather, James Reade, had a brother Redmond, who, I believe, is your Redmond. I had no idea what happened to him, until I saw your post. Many thanks for that.
I'm sure I saw an Earnest in my search. Try looking for him back in London, where his father and most (possibly all) of his siblings were born. He might have gone to Kilkenny. If I can find him again, I'll be back.

Hi Phillip,

Esther has been very much a brick wall for me. & still trying  to find information on her & her family. Not having much luck. The only stuff I have is a transcript of her death certificate & I only got that in the last week or so. & newspaper article about her accident. It wasn’t till I got Esther death certificate that I found out about her 1st husband & that Ernest & Eva had different fathers.

The death certificate say her father is John bates Lawrence & mother Mary maiden name unknown. & her father occupation as retired.
I have checked with the UK birth, Death & Marriage. & there is a birth for Esther Lawrence born Liverpool 1849 & her mother is Mary née Slater. I have not found her father listed as John bates Lawrence anywhere in the UK. But there is a death record in NZ for one & a grave 1904 aged 88. Which say his with his daughter Elizabeth. She was born Liverpool 1852. Mother née Slater.

Give the years on the death certificate. She would have gone to New Zealand in about 1864. & then to NSW in about 1884. I wouldn’t hold these years as 100% actually tho. As the certificate also says she was 55 at the time of death. Some newspapers said she was 59. & the birth record in UK says 1849. It also said her 1st marriage she was 19 & 24 for her 2nd.

I haven’t been able to find anything on Ernest or Henry her sons. I also don’t have anything on Esther 2nd husband Henry other then he worked for the New Zealand insurance company. But I have not found a birth or death for him.

My 2nd Great-Grandmother is her daughter Eva. She married Reginald Buist in NSW, 1900. They when to Western Australian. Where they had two children. Where when Esther accident happened.
