Title: Archibald Drochoid McDonald Cranachan of Keppoch
Post by: Dixi Joy on Friday 30 November 12 17:35 GMT (UK)
Archibald and wife Margaret married Skye 1813 said to have purchased a farm in Glenelg Loch Hourn and had 8 children. Archibald is brother to Mary MacKillops Grandfather.
Archibald and entire family migrated to Australia in 1837. I am looking for farm?

I just came across this post, all above info could be wrong, my 3rd great grandfather is Archibald, but my fathers dna test suggests we are of the Clanranald line. Angus McDonald.

Hi Gus, just saw your post. Archibald (1785-1872) is my 4x grandfather. I have also done a DNA for my father, how were you able to ascertain the Angus link?
Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony,

If I'm reading correctly, Gus has signed off with his full name Angus McDonald rather than saying he's descended from Angus McDonald?

Dixi, there were penal laws against Catholics owning land in Scotland, emancipation only came in 1829. Would that cover buying a farm?

Skoosh.

Just a wee question, could 'Drochoid' have been spelt wrongly?

“An Drochaid” means “The Bridge” in Gaelic, which is the name Gaelic settlers gave Mabou"

Often with Highlanders, names which look/seem to be middle names were actually references to either their residence/occupation/ancestor as highlanders seldom use surnames to describe folks probably because there were (still are) so many people with same forenames & surnames it was easier (still is) to distinguish them by what I mentioned seem to be middle names although they're not.

Tony,

Sometimes we (including myself) miss little bits when 'speed' reading!

"dna test suggests we are of the Clanranald line. Angus McDonald."

The 'full stop' after line was the key  ;)

We buried my fathers (Donald McDonald's) ashes at the St Johns Canberra grave on Australia Day long weekend this year (2018). He is the newest McDonald to be interned there since Alexander Hedley and my Uncle Alexander John who died in 1978. My father had his DNA done and is of the Clanranald line, not the Cranachan/Keppoch line, which threw our research into turmoil. My sister is the one doing 90% of the research and has contacted genealogists in Scotland who are of the same opinion. She is currently on holidays in England and Scotland so more info soon.

All this is wrong... The Cranachan line is via the Keppoch/Bohuntine line. My father is the last to be buried in the St Johns Canberra burial plot. Archibald buried in Queanbeyan was his great great grandfather. My father Donald Hedley had his dna done and is recorded on the Clan Donald dna website. Heres a quote as to his origins. “ Persons in this group are known to be descendants of Ranald MacDonald, 1st of Glengarry and Clanranald”. The McDonalds history book is wrong, plain and simple. Dna has proved that.

Not sure if this is thread is still being read but I’ll update anyhow. As of 2021 we have been listed under McDonalds of Knoydart by the Clan Donald USA DNA Project.  Which is Clanranald. &&4QIZ5 is the Clan Donald code. I have made contact with a 5th cousin (thru dna) and his line goes back to Alexander 1778 - 1852, Archibalds brother. Their parents were Donald 1750 - 1824 and Margaret McLean.
