The 1891 Scottish Census shows an Eli Lockwood aged 2 born Hawick, a visitor with Eli Lockwood aged 28 and Fanny Lockwood aged 32(My great aunt).
Fanny and Eli senior were married in 1888.
Can't find any other reference to young Eli (1889). The only thought I have is, that young Eli wasn't registered as a Lockwood and is the result of an earlier liason of Eli senior whose mother lived in Hawick. This is supported by 80 other Eli's listed as born in Hawick between 1888 and 1891.
Any clues to the true story would be most welcome

Just done quick (free) search on www.scotlandspeople.gov,uk and I can only see one result. I searched only for Males, with the first name (that begin with) Eli born between 1887 and 1890 in Hawick. There is one result. I have since narrowed the search and the birth was registered in 1888.
Don't know what the surname is but you're right it's not Lockwood. Have you looked at this entry?

The surname would appear to be Cunningham.

Hi ,
Is it possible young Eli was born before the couple married and is under Fanny's maiden name ?
If he was born May/June 1888 he would still only be 2 on the 1891 Census(April)

How about Eli Lockwood Cunningham(male) born 1888 Hawick Roxburgh on SP ?
ev
Added - was Fanny's maiden name Elkins ?

Hi Norman ,
I've merged your 2 posts into 1
As you can see 2 posts on the same thing can lead to people searching and giving the same information twice.
If you reply to this topic all should be well.

Thank you for your support.
I have downloaded the Eli Lockwood birth in1888 and it seems respectable as the mother May Cunningham was a Lockwood. The mystery remains

Wonder if Eli(senior) had a sister May Lockwood ?
Does the 1891 Census say son or just visitor ?
Trying to see if Eli Lockwood should be Eli Cunningham nephew on the 1891 Census :-\

Please go to the top of the class.
Yes Eli had a sister who I believed was Mary, but after expanding records I see it is May born Selkirk 1865.
I wasn't thinking laterally enough to consider this possibility. My thoughts were making Eli Senior a philanderer.
May is in the 1901 along with a large family and Young Eli aged 12.
So I give you Game Set and Match and many many thanks.

Your welcome NormanE ,
I to could not find any other records for an Eli Lockwood(Census , birth , death) so there did seem to be a chance that Eli was a nephew and not a son.
