I am trying to trace William McGaul and his wife Helen Hannay who were living in Kirkcowan in the early 19th Century.
I have them and their family in 1841 when William was given as 70 yrs and Helen as 60 yrs. I suspect they both then died before 1851 and wondered if anybody might have access to Kirkcowan MI's and if there is a stone for them.
Helen Hannay was possibly born 1780 in Sorbie but this is just taken from information on the IGI.
So far I have found no trace of Williams parents or place of birth. They had children baptised in Kirkcowan from 1810 and I have also found a son, Andrew who was born around 1801, censuses give place of birth as Penninghame but I haven't found him there.
I suspect William and Helen also had two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret but again haven't found a place or date of birth. Elizabeth was married to David McGill (IGI) and Margaret to Alexander Burns (IGI).
Any thoughts on this family would be much appreciated, I have information on most of the other children of William and Helen.

Hi,
I have the Kirkcowan MI book and I am afraid there are no burials shown under McGaull or any spelling variations that would tie in with William or Helen.

It was worth a try as I don't think any burial records for Kirkcowan exist, at least not that I know of.

I think you will find David and Elizabeth McGill indexed as David M Gill in 1841
Elizabeth is shown as aged 35 and David as 50 - living in Kirkcowan

Trotter's "Galloway Gossip" has this name as MacGall/MacGaw, familiarly Gaw with the genteel wey, McGaw, Gall or Mackay.
This hilarious book, pub' 1901, is a must for Gallowegians.

That book sounds interesting Skoosh. I'll have to see if it mentions the Marshalls. Haven't heard of it before.

Judy, the author lists the Gallowa names together with the forms used once their owners got the "Gentility". Marshall isn't on the list, not much you can do with Marshall. Billy Marshall was of course the King of the Gallowa Gypsies and fought at the Boyne.
I would try some of the Wigtown bookshops online for a copy. Dr R.De Bruce Trotter, it surely must have been reprinted. I have a nice copy which somebody valued enough to have it bound in leather. It's the kind of book you would read every year.

Ooooh, I just love books like that.
My youngest son once bought me a book of the works of Robert Burns bound in red leather from an antique shop. This was when he realised that we had ancestors from Dalrymple, Ayrshire and his birthday was 25th January too! ;) Mind you, I must admit, I canna understand a word of it I'm afraid. :'( My old great aunt used to talk in that cant but she's long gone now. :'(
I'll keep a look out for that book though.

The various registers etc that I have looked at all have the names McGall, McGaw, Gaw, McGaa etc in hte Kirkcowan area but it is difficult to connect these names with the name McGaul with any certainty.

Would the Liverpool name Maghull (?) be derived from McGaul?

I don't think so, Maghull is quite an old name from before the McGauls moved to that area.
The interesting McGaul in that area (Birkenhead) is James Hannay McGaul (1841 - 1921) who was one of the founder members of Tranmere Rovers FC and also on 2 occasions Mayor of Birkenhead.

Hello Bob,
My grat grat grandfather emigrated from Kirkcowan to Argentina in 1853. His father was Andrew MacGaul and his mother was Elizabeth Harries. I suppose that Andrew was a son of William, the one you mentioned.
