Title: James Goldsworthy
Post by: wearethemods80 on Tuesday 18 December 12 02:21 GMT (UK)
James Goldsworthy (died in South Australia) was married (in South Australia) to Lily Laura Annie Eveline Rowe (born in South Australia). There is some confusion about who James's father and mother are. Some research says John Goldsworthy but I am unsure if this is correct.

Could anyone help please?

Thanks

There is no James Goldsworthy in the Births Index for S A with father John and born around 1857 plus or minus a couple of years, I'm afraid, so at this stage it's hard to identify a mother.   :-\

Hi,

Not sure if this will help or not or if you already have it but its the marriage notice. James was from Cornwall

That is the correct James with children Percy, Brice, Garnet, Vesta, etc. Percy was my Great Grandfather. We know he married Lily (Nora) Rowe. I am just stuck on finding which John Goldsworthy would be his father.

Thanks for your information so far  :)

Perhaps this is him with his parents in 1861, at Linton?? Terrace, Redruth, Cornwall.  All born in Redruth.

John Goldsworthy   32, dealer in marine stores
Elizth Goldsworthy   28
John Goldsworthy   11
Louisa Goldsworthy   4
James Goldsworthy   3
William Goldsworthy   1
David Goldsworthy   7 Months

However - caution - there are 7 James GOLDSWORTHYs registered in Redruth from 1852 - 1859  :o

If the mother (Elizth) is Elizabeth Annear Andrews then that is the information I have. I am just not 100% certain. James would also have been 3 years old in 1861.

I'm pretty sure he travelled alone at the age of 19.
I guess he came over as a cornish miner.
His parents most likely stayed in Cornwall.

It's a pity South Australian marriage certificates aren't like those of most of the other states, as James' mother would probably have been named.

As it appears he may have been born in Cornwall, it makes it difficult. As Judith says, there are several James Goldsworthys of around the right age on the 1861 and the 1871 Census, and several births on Freebmd.  At this stage identifying which one is the problem.   :-\

Daughter Vesta Rowe GOLDSWORTHY marries a GOLDSWORTHY, and I wonder if they might be cousins...and James GOLDSWORTHY and William Henry GOLDSWORTHY are brothers?

James Goldsworthy uses name Douglas Darcy Leigh Evearisto for son
William Henry Goldsworthy uses name Douglas Leith for son
Leith and Leigh are close enough (allowing for transcription error, level of literacy etc, to be the same name).

Thanks so much for everyones help. I'm still confused with which John Goldsworthy would be the father of James. I thought it might be John goldsworthy, married to Elizabeth Annear Andrews, but as has been stated their son may have died in Queensland.  :(

Your James Goldsworthy definitely married Nora ROWE if Percy was your great grandfather.

From the S A Indexes James GOLDSWORTHY & Lily Annie Laura Eveline ROWE had the following children…..

Douglas Darcy Leigh Evearisto GOLDSWORTHY born 11th March 1881 at

Obviously the Qld James G is not your person of interest.  The James buried at Bundaberg Cemetery was born c1857 Cornwall,  however he is buried with a Catherine GOLDSWORTHY born c1856 Ireland and two others.  I noticed a GOLDSWORTHY birth on the Qld indexes with father not named and mother Kate KENNY.

I realise this information does not give you James' mother's name but helps narrow down the years to search on the census.  Perhaps he was born September quarter 1857.

Cheers

Just adding a bit to Cando's post in case it is of use to someone else.  Please do not take this as gospel...

It seems that James G. son of John G. and Elizabeth ANDREW firstly immigrated to NZ.  He married Priscilla WALES and had a number of children there. https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/

They then went to Sydney where another child was born.  Wife Priscilla disappeared into the sunset and James went to Queensland where a number of children were born to Catherine/Kate KENNY (some GOLDSWORTHY, some KENNY).  They then went to WA where another child was born, and then returned to Queensland.

I suspect that this court case might be linked to the birth of a child to James' daughter Priscilla in 1896.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3632621

He appears to not have served the 15 years as a James and Kate G. are on the 1905 electoral roll at Gympie.

This is obviously not your family.

Your James and Lily gave their children some colourful names - do any of them crop up in Lily's family?

1861 Census
There appear to be 5 James Goldsworths born 1857 + or - 2 years on the 1861 Census, 4 in Redruth, and 1 in Launceston, Cornwall.

The Launceston James GOLDSWORTHY is a 5 year old boarder with no obvious relationship to the householders, and besides, as posted by Cando, James was from Redruth.

Of the four James GOLDSWORTHYs in Redruth, one family can be eliminated, as the father is Paul.

That leaves 3 possibilities…..

1. James GOLDSWORTHY aged 3 in Redruth with father John and mother Elizabeth, but the father is a Marine Dealer, not tied up with mining, though that doesn’t necessarily eliminate this family.
RG09/1579/129/20

2. James Goldsworthy aged 3 with no father listed. He’s the grandson of Sarah DUNSTAN, who also has a son William DUNSTAN who is an Engine Worker at a  Mine. So in this case there is a link to mining.
RG09/1579/150/27

3. James GOLDSWORTHY aged 5 with mother Anna, who is a school mistress and whose husband is abroad. The age looks a little old, but may be inaccurate as ages on censuses can be. However, once again there is no obvious link to mining.

From FreeBMD....

John GOLDSWORTHY married Elizabeth ANDREW September Quarter 1849 Redruth 9/277
This seems to indicate they are the family in 1861 with son John born c1850 and son James born c 1858.

So is the James we're looking for the grandson of Sarah DUNSTON or the son of Anna GOLDSWORTHY whose husband is abroad? Or another John GOLDSWORTHY?

There were marriages for 15 men by the name of John GOLDSWORTHY in Redruth between 1849 and 1857.   ::)

It looks like Sarah DUNSTAN's daughter Sarah Ann married a John GOLDSWORTHY at Redruth in 1855.  The two boys John and James are with their grandmother in 1861 and 1871 so perhaps they were orphaned?

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

This James was employed in a Smith's shop in 1871, so maybe you would expect him to have become a Blacksmith?  Sarah seems to have been financially well off being a "Fund Holder" in 1871 and "Housekeeper/Proprietor" in 1861.  She may have left a Will.

Dee, can you read the notation for Sarah DUNSTON in 1861 which says "Wid. of ...?"

Good find Dee  ;D

Unfortunately it doesn't give his date of birth so we don't know which birth registration his might be, but perhaps it is the first and if our James was born 20 November 1857 then his birth might have been registered later in the first quarter of 1858.  As I said, it is going to be a process of elimination.

Births

1. December Quarter 1857

GOLDSWORTHY, James
Redruth  Vol. 5c  Page 261

2. March Quarter 1858

GOLDSWORTHY, James
Redruth  Vol. 5c  Page 283

This is the marriage that I think is the parents of Sarah DUNSTAN's grandsons:

DUNSTONE, Sarah Ann
GOLDSWORTHY, John
Redruth    Vol. 5c   Page 389

The other couple on the page can be found together in the next census so I am f fairly sure this couple go together.  Sarah Ann was aged 13 and living with her parents in 1851.

The census records show that the DUNSTANs always lived at Rose Row and there is a baptism on Feb 23 1856 at Redruth (image 123) for John, son of John (a miner) and Sarah Ann GOLDSWORTHY.  Their address is Rose Row.

Hi. First time on RootsChat. Been reading Goldsworthy details with great interest. Thanks everyone for your great research.
I live in Adelaide , Australia and my Grandfather , on my mother's side, was Brice Allerdale Goldsworthy.  James, who came out on the Alumbagh was definitely his father. They were old Moonta Mines people and strong Methodists. Brice and his wife, Rhoda, eventually came to live in Adelaide after the copper mining boom had subsided. I seem to recall Brice had a blacksmith background like his Father, James, who was engaged in a Blacksmiths business in 1871 as mentioned in posts by others .
BTW..re unusual James children's names...one child's First Name was Gething..and I noticed that Gething was also the Surname of some people who came out on the ship Alumbagh along with James.
