Title: Tyr Wynt?
Post by: hencarrai on Friday 28 December 12 15:10 GMT (UK)
Hi all,
my ancestor Ann Morgan b. 1836 (nee Phillips) was living here in 1871 -91, but they couldn't decide how to spell it.
1871; RG10/5352/130/22 Tyr Hwnt
1881; RG11/5273/24/7 Tyr Wynt
1891; RG12/4382/10/13 Tir Wnt
The location is Cwmdows above Crumlin, Mon.
Does anyone know the correct spelling and translation please.

I cannot find the place in 1901 nor in 1911. Ann had moved by 1901 but I would love to know who lived there in those years.
A modern OS map has Tyr-hunt in the right area. ST205981 approx.

Thanks for any help,
Rob

According to a Welsh speaking friend, Tir Wynt literary means 'windy place'.

Thanks Gerry,
I can imagine it was/is rather windy in that location.
Must have blown away by 1901, ha ha.

William Thomas,34,born CefnCoch plus family

RG13  4967  48  36

He is not a short term resident.

Great stuff,
that's the place.
The Ann Thomas (wife) is d/o the Ann Morgan in my original post.

Thanks Roger,
Rob

Have now found the 1911 record.
It is now spelled; Ty-wrunt.
Oh well it's anyones guess.

Same people there as 1901.

Thanks for all your help and translations.

What appears in any database can obviously be the product of a number of things:

The interpretation of the enumerator of what he is told(more relevant if the informant is not literate)

The handwriting of the enumerator

The skill of the database transcriber(perhaps unlikely to be Welsh). This may vary between databases

One step can usually be removed from this by viewing the original and forming your own opinion but in the latter case this is difficult.

Roger

Hi
Have a look at http://www.old-maps.co.uk  Put in co ordinates 320661 / 198088 and this should take you to the map. You can then select from the list on the right which year you want to look at.  The map dated 1879/1880 shows the premises spelt tyr Hunt

Gwynt mutated to wynt can also mean smell in other parts of Wales!

Ugh!
I can't have my dear ancestors living in 'Smelly Place' can I.
If you don't mind I'm going to go for Windy Place.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Depends on the smell of course, if it was roses it would be fine, but think I would play safe and stick with windy.

The farm appears at Tyr Hwnt on the 1846 Tithe map for Mynyddislwyn. The farmer was a Morgan Williams aged 69. Hwnt means yonder in Welsh. On the 1841 census, it is named Ty Draw. Draw also means yonder. It is still there today under the name Ty Hunt.
