Title: On this day in JANUARY ...
Post by: Lydart on Monday 31 December 12 21:12 GMT (UK)
I'm a couple of hours early, but wanted to make sure everyone was sober enough in the new year  to start the monthly B M D's of all your ancestors.

(See previous threads 'On this day ....' )

As well as just dates, do include any interesting facts or family stories about the people you flag up.

On this day in 1987, my uncle, William died. He was the brother of George who died a few days before on Christmas Day 1986. Neither knew the other one was ill, so we like to think that they met up in Heaven and each asked the other what they were doing there.  ;D That was a difficult time for my mother though, losing two brothers within days.

Unfortunately we went through the same situation 4 years ago when my mother died on the 2nd January and her brother in law on the 4th.

Lots of dates pre 1752 for 1 Jan to 25 March will be shown as 2 years, such as 1702/3 etc.  Although I know this shows the old Julian Calendar date together with the new Gregorian date, I can’t remember what it is actually called.

Mary Phillips Brand my g.g.aunt was born in Alton, Hants in 1856.  She is on yesterday’s list too as she died on 31.12.1928
Eliza Louisa Clarke my husband’s g.grandmother was born in Warwick in 1852

10 Baptisms – must have been a popular day to be baptised.
John Gilchrist my 3 x g.grandfather was baptised in Frampton, Lincs in 1805

Baxter Stanton my 4 x g.g.uncle and Lydia Hammond married in Fosdyke, Lincs in 1801
Sarah Clarke the wife of my 2nd cousin 3 times removed  ??? died in 1897.  All I know of Sarah is her date of birth and her date of death.

Maud Ellen Shalless (nee Cockett) was buried in St Andrews Churchyard, Higher Blackley, Lancs in 1959, 3 days after her death on 29 December 1958.

Frances Louisa Douglas nee Dolby died on this day 1908 in Bury, Lancs., aged 64
She was wife of my great great uncle George Boyce Douglas
Frances was born on 13.11.1843 in Lambeth and married George in 1867 in Bolton.

Frances must have had an eventful life certainly not easy.
She had 10 children of whom 3 died in infancy.

Her husband practiced all his life as a doctor based at Bolton, but was not qualified and was prosecuted and convicted (only) once, in 1870.
George was also made bankrupt twice in his life, in 1868 and 1876.
George was admitted to Prestwich asylum between 1901 and his death there in 1905

Congrats to the god-daughter, DORAN54

On this day, 1st Jan 1875, OH's great-great-grandfather, Michael Begg Sea Captain, died in N County Dublin aged 74.

We don't know much about his voyages, but the family owned/part-owned ships, and his sons sailed around the Med, and to the West Indies and S America.
I stayed up till all hours on Saturday with Ancestry's freebie, downloading Masters' Certs etc.
Now to make sense of it!

Daisy Gertrude Wilson, born 1902, in Plumstead, daughter of Arthur Edward and Amelia Sophia (nee Rainer).  Arthur was Amelia's second husband so Daisy was my half gt. aunt......or something!  She married Sidney James Nevill on Christmas Day 1929 in Hoxton.  I think Sidney died in 1939 but have not bought the cert to confirm; Daisy might have re-married but I've no confirmation.  There were no children.

Peter Pemberton my 1st cousin twice removed was born in Kingsley, Cheshire in 1864. He died aged 11 in 1875.

Alice Jane Dawson my husband’s g.aunt was baptised in Manchester Cathedral in 1869.

Edwin Wagstaff my husband’s 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Warwick in 1803.  His mother was on yesterday’s list as she died on 2 January 1840, so at least Edwin and his sister were adults by then.

Sarah Spraggett my husband’s 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Leamington Hastings in 1799.  Her parents were on yesterday’s list as they married on 2 January 1777.  Sarah was their 12th out of 15 children (poor mother she had her first child when she was aged 19 and her 15th child when she was aged 46.  She must have been worn out!)

Thomas Henry Cockett my maternal grandfather died of Tuberculosis of Lungs of 6 months duration in Harpurhey on this day in 1922 only 14 months after his eldest daughter also died from complications of TB.  Fortunately, no-one else in the family succumbed to the disease.  I only have two photographs of him, one holding my mother who must have been about 18 months old, so taken around 1913 and another one, where he looks much older, although he only lived another 8 years.  He looks quite a frightening stern man, I wonder what he was like when young as my gran looked so pretty in a photograph I have of her which I guess was taken some time between the ages of 16 and 19 when she married.  He was a year younger.  My mum didn’t say much about him as she was only 10 when he died, but she did remember that having had 6 daughters, the son he had always wanted arrived followed by another baby son who died aged 3 days, and then she arrived 15 months later.  Having got the son he wanted, he was amenable to another girl and mum’s older sisters said she was his favourite and was always taking her out.  Mum says that is only because he wanted to go to the pub and she was his excuse!

Only 3 today.

Mary Ann Pemberton my 2 x g.g.aunt was born in Witton, Cheshire in 1816

James Gaunt my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Denby, Yorkshire in 1770.  He was the 7th child of my 4 x g.grandparents.   Fortunately, they had 11 children in all, as the 11th was my 3 x g.grandmother!

Mary Ann Dye my 2 x g.grandmother was buried in Halesworth Cemetery, Halesworth, Suffolk in 1871.  She was the 5th of 11 children and although she died aged only 53, (she was the one who died on 30 Dec after bursting a varicose vein in her leg) her mother lived until the age of 81 and her father to the age of 76.

Hello and Happy New Year to everyone.

I missed my entries for January 1st, what with being otherwise occupied, bringing in the New year with forty-three friends, on a Scottish island.

So, belatedly, here they are:
January 1st

1756 - John Crossland, baptised Spennithorne. A 6 x great uncle.
1818 - John Raitt, baptised Old Machar, Aberdeenshire. 4 x great uncle.
1870 - Mary Ann Allan Raitt, born Newhills Aberdeenshire. 1st cousin x3.
1888 - James Frost, born Middlesbrough. My maternal grandmother's first husband. He has been mentioned in earlier threads. He died during the flu' epidemic which followed WW1.

1860 - Sarah Howe ( nee Noakes) died in Tollesbury, Essex. My 4 x great grandmother of whom I know precious little. Maybe I should make it my business to investigate the Noakes line during 2013.

I have nothing to offer for 2nd, 3rd or 4th January, so see you all again tomorrow, by which time I hope to be less infectious. At the moment I fear you could become ill just by reading my posts!

Born somewhere in Manchester, 4th January, 1861, John James Stubbs, baptised later in the same month in Manchester Cathedral.   20 years later he is recorded as a 'stationery clerk' in the 1881 census.    He was an older brother to my Great Aunt Lizzie's husband George Stubbs.   By 1888 at the age of 26 he had emigrated to Manitoba, in Canada (haven't found out what he did there) and his 16 year old brother George went with him.

John James married (in Canada) a girl from Scotland, also an immigrant, in 1890, and they had eight children, one of whom I mentioned on the December thread, Herbert, who was killed on the Somme in 1916 at the age of 23.

I must add to my 'to do' list .... what did these brothers do in Canada ?   George eventually married my Great Aunt and became a homesteader in Saskatchewan, but no idea about John James.

4 years ago today my uncle Dennis died aged 85, two days after my mother, his sister in law. When we were clearing out her house I found 20 letters that Dennis had written in World War two to his sister. He was stationed in India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) for about 4 years at the time and the letters are full of descriptions of the country and how they spent their leave. They also mention things that he had been told were happening at home including my parents' engagement and wedding. They make fascinating reading and I have transcribed them for the family.

My two great-great aunts died on the same day, 4th January 1842.

The Cambrian of 22nd January 1842 reported the funeral:

In a former paper we mentioned the deaths, within hours of each other, at the respective ages of 20 and 17 years, of Emma and Sarah Evans, the eldest daughters of John Evans Esq., foreman manager of the Dowlais Iron Company. They were consigned to the "house appointed for all living" on Saturday the 8th instant, amidst the sympathy of a very numerous and highly respectable assemblage on that mournful occasion. It was, indeed, a scene of deep sorrow. The extreme affliction of the worthy mother, almost sank, also to the grave by long days and nights of intense watching around the beds of sickness and of death; and the anguish-wrung ejaculation Oh! My daughters! of the grieved father, over the grave as they were laid, side by side, in their last earthly abode, excited unusual sympathy. "I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me," said the chastened King of Israel, when at the death of his son, he dried his, then, unavailing tears and sought consolation. The operations of the works were suspended, in respectful regard, during the funeral.

On this day 5th January 1887, my great great great grandfather James Steen died in Strawberry Bank, Linlithgow aged 82. He had lived in Linlithgow his whole life and was a tanner, more than likely supplying leather to his son (my great great grandfather), brother-in-law and sons-in-law, who were all shoemakers. Most of his children were daughters and he had only two sons, James, named after his father and Henry, named after his wife's father. When his first wife Jane Downs, a baker's daughter from Bo'ness died he remarried to Margaret White. His youngest child Henry seems to have taken against this marriage and left to join the army and took part in the famous 'March to Kandahar'. The informant on his DC was his grandson James Downie, the son of his daughter Marion.

Catherine Collett my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Stradbroke, Suffolk in 1757

Letitia Stanton my 1st cousin 5 times removed was baptised in Heckington, Lincs in 1822.  She was also Rootschatter's Redroger’s g.grandmother.

Hessiah Dye my 3 x g.g. aunt was baptised in Newton Flotman, Norfolk in 1783.  She has the strangest first name of any of my ancestors, anyone ever heard of it before?

John Tubbs my half 2nd g.g.uncle was buried in Holbeach, Lincs in 1866.  He is related to me through his father Thomas Tubbs who was the father of my illegitimate 2 x g.grandfather.  John’s father had two wives neither of which was my 3 x g.grandmother. John’s mother was the first wife of Thomas Tubbs, whom he married when my 2 x g.grandfather was 5.  Unfortunately, Thomas never married my 3 x g.grandmother

And last but by no means least, today is my birthday.

January 5th 1790 Samuel Howe was baptised in Tillingham, Essex. My 4 x great grandfather. The 1841 census says he was a Cotton Maker, which seems a strange sort of an occupation. Most of this line seemed to be involved in the fishing industry so maybe he made sails? Anyway, he married Sarah Noakes and had seven children. That's as much as I know.

That is so sad, Graham. Have you found out what was the cause of their deaths?

The cause of death was given as consumption - but my great-aunt wrote: "...the two eldest girls went to stay in London with the Guests and Charlotte caught cold on the coach journey up, and came home three months later, consumptive. The two girls were wrapped in each other and the day Emily died of consumption Sarah was found dead on a sofa."

Victorian melodrama for you!

On this day 6th January in 1698 my great great great great great grandfather Robert Tweedie was born in Douglas, Lanarkshire. He was the son of John Tweedie and Jean Wilson.

In 1847 by far my earliest geat great grandfather James McBride was baptized in St. Joseph's catholic church, Stranraer. His father was James McBride, born in Whithorn Wigtownshire and his mother, Mary Keane, born somewhere in Ireland. His son, my great grandfather George wouldn't be born for almost another 40 years and would live to the 1970's. Anyone coming from the first date to the second would think they were on a different planet.

My gt. uncle, George Richard Barham, was born in 1870 in Holborn, London;  son of George William and Elizabeth Mary Ann (nee Burgess). He married late in life (1907) in Shoreditch to Emma Florence Bartlett; they had four children but sadly the youngest two died as children.  He was a wireworker and I think he died in 1953; just waiting for the cert to confirm.

Quite a few today.

Roger Postlethwaite and Mary Elizabeth James my 5 x g.grandparents married in Kirby Ireleth, Lancashire in 1754.  I have only found 4 children for them which doesn't seem many for the time.

Charles Collett my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1799

Thomas Tubbs my 3 x g.grandfather, and brother of Robert Tubbs below, was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1791, although he was born in 1789.  He also died on this day but in 1852 in Holbeach Marsh, Lincs.  He had 13 children with 3 different women (I suppose he could have had more but I've not bothered to research any more).  His first child – that I know of – was my 2 x g.grandfather and he was illegitimate, Thomas never marrying his mother, my 3 x g.grandmother.

Robert Tubbs my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1791

Elizabeth Baxter my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Heckington, Lincs in 1746/47

Elizabeth Chapman my 4 x g.g.aunt and her twin sister Ann Chapman were baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincs in 1768

William Postlethwaite my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Pennington in Furness, Lancashire in 1765

Sarah Chorley my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Gosforth, Cumberland in 1828.  She was the 2nd of 3 illegitimate children that my 3 x g.grandmother had before she married my 3 x g.grandfather.  Sarah only lived until she was 5.

Maboth Bayldon my 4 x g.grandmother died in Lockwood, Almondsbury, Yorks in 1812.  Interestingly, she appeared to have signed the parish register at the time of her marriage, but only signed her will with a X I wonder if the lawyer didn't think she could write and just said "Put your mark there", so she did.

Seth Hobson my g.grandfather died in Manchester in 1892.  He was the g.grandson of Mabeth Bayldon above.  Although his death certificate gives his cause of death as Pneumonia, my mother (and interestingly some 4th cousins I was in touch with a couple of years ago) said that they'd been told he had fallen off his horse and cart coming back from market, under the influence of drink!  He was a butcher.

Blanch Badams my husband’s 4 x g.grandmother was buried in Warwick, 4 days after her death in 1840.  She was 76 when she died and the cause of her death was just given as Old Age.

Margaret Postlethwaite my 3 x g.g.aunt aged 10 when she died, was buried in Dalton in Furness, Lancs in 1800

Deborah Wane my 5 x g.g.aunt was buried in Aldingham Lancs in 1815 aged 88.  Her father was only 43 when he died, he had been a mariner, but Deborah must have taken after her mother who was 82 when she died in 1780.

A first cousin, twice removed, Florence Beatrice Rainer, born 1898 in Toronto, Canada; illegitimate daughter of Florence Beatrice Rainer. 1901 census shows her back in England with her mother, now both with the surname Lumsden. There's a possible sighting of her later in a Canadian orphanage but she died, as Beatrice Grace Rainer, in Vancouver in 1921;  her mother having married in 1911 in Winnipeg and moved to Vancouver.

Arthur Hobson my g.g.uncle was born in Ingbirchworth, Yorks in 1856.  He was an apprentice joiner whilst living with his sister and her husband who was a butcher/joiner – which means he was really a joiner but had married into a butcher’s family!  Arthur worked as a joiner most of his life, but in the 1890s decided he, too, would follow the family business.  Obviously he didn’t enjoy it because he reverted to being a joiner.

George Frederick Cockett my g.uncle was born in 1879 in Manchester.  He died in 1883, aged 4 from Measles.

William Brand  my 2 x g.g.uncle was bapt in  Sleaford, Lincs in 1814.  He was named after another brother who was born and died in 1812 aged about 2 days.  Unfortunately, the 2nd William died in 1824 aged 10.

Elizabeth Daintry my 8 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1637/8

Joseph Gaunt my 3 x g.g.uncle died in Denby Dale, Yorks in 1850.  He was a farmer and was almost 90 when he died.

Jane Sharp my g.g.aunt died in Kingsley, Cheshire in 1915

John Dameron my 10 x g.g.grandfather died in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1596/97.  He was Lord of the Manor of Westerfield.  The manor house which had been left in trust to his wife was bequeathed to his grandson, the eldest son of his daughter Joan (known as Johanna) and her husband John Collett.  Of course, I’m descended from the 6th child and 3rd son!

Jonathan Bagshaw my 7 x g.grandfather was buried in Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1721/22.  I don’t know anything about him, apart from the fact that he fathered my 6 x g.g.grandfather Benjamin Bagshaw.  I did visit Bradfield a couple of years ago, to see if I could find a gravestone, but although there are many gravestones in the church, most of them are illegible.  I spoke to the friendly people in the pub, where we had a great lunch, but all they could tell me was that in past centuries, nearly everyone in the village was a Bagshaw or related to a Bagshaw.

Jonathan Middleton my 3 x g.grandfather was buried in Millom, Cumberland in 1877 aged 76.  He had been an agricultural labourer throughout his adult life, yet his death certificate states he was a fisherman.  I queried this on the Cumberland board and was told that near where he lived there were good fishing places and many retired men took up fishing and made a living from it, so I guess this is what must have happened with my 3 x g.grandfather.

Thomas Henry Cockett my grandfather was buried in Higher Blackley, Manchester in 1922, he was 44.  As my mum was only 10 when he died, obviously, I never knew him.  I’ve got a couple of photos of him and he looks very severe compared with 44 year old men today.

Thomas Boulton Benson my 1st  cousin 3 times removed was buried in Dalton in Furness, Lancs in 1852, he was just over a year old when he died.  Strangely he was the 1st cousin of my g.grandfather on his father’s side and also the 4th cousin of my g.grandfather on his mother’s side.

My 3xgt aunt, Mary Jane Pain was born in Woolwich in 1857;  daughter of Charles George and Mary Jane (nee Ottley). One one census Mary is shown as "deaf from childhood";  she never married and died in 1941 in Beaminster. She appears on Electoral Rolls in the Woolwich area until late 1930s so possibly moved away when the bombing in WW2 started.

January 8th 1867, Jane Raitt was born in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire. Daughter of George Raitt and Elizabeth Watt, she was my great-grandfather's cousin. I think her father helped my ggf to get started in life, by finding him a carpentry apprenticeship in the village. He went on to be a master craftsman with a fairly middle-class lifestyle, owning his own house ( which he built and which I wave to every time I drive past it). Not bad for the illegitimate son of a woman who spent her life looking after other people.

Out of all my ancestors, only 2 events on this date.

John Lockwood my 3 x g.grandfather was baptised in Cumberworth, Yorks in 1786
He was a publican as was his father before him.  He was only 42 when he died, but as he died in 1828 I don’t know the cause of his death, so it might or might not have been related to alcohol.

Jane l’Estrange, my g.g.uncle’s 1st wife was baptised this day in 1854 in Finsbury, Middlesex.  She was only 27 when she died of abdominal typhus, leaving a 10 month old baby.

Daughter and son-in-law were married on 9th January some years back now.

My great-great-great-great grandfather John Garnsey married my great-great-great-great grandmother Mary Baker 9th January 1729 in Exeter.

My 4th cousin once removed William Barrett married Gwerfyl Lloyd on 9th January 1908 at Holy Trinity, Chelsea. This Barrett family have given me a good deal of difficulty as they had such a narrow range of male Christian names - John and William predominate, with very few having middle names. I suspect that when my great-grandfather, William Parish Barrett, was married there were at least three, perhaps four, William Barretts in the congregation.

My great grandfather, John Williams was born this day in 1839, at 10 p.m. in More Crichel, Dorset.   (The time given on his birth certificate suggests there may have been a twin .... but no evidence of this).    His father Isaac had died the previous June in an horrendous accident where he fell off a farm cart and was 'kicked in the pelvis and scrotum' until he bled to death.   This information was discovered for me by DebUSA, for which I am very grateful; I made a special journey to the Dorset record to see the inquest report.

Gr. grandfather John, who started working at about 10 years old as an 'ag.lab' went on to marry Mary Trowbridge, and they had (according to the 1911 census) 12 children; I have only managed to locate 10 of them, so perhaps the other two died at birth or soon after.   Although John started on the land in rural Dorset, he ended his days, with Mary and several of his sons, in the Risca area of south Wales.   I managed to trace him to the age of 93 or 94 from voting lists, but lost him at that point .... and with a name like John Williams in Wales .... he is more or less untraceable, and I cannot find his death or grave.  I have sent for two 'wrong' John Williams death certificates  ::)  and it starts to get a bit expensive !

I missed yesterday!

9th January 1792, Hannah Cant was baptised in Southminster, Essex, daughter of James Cant and Hannah Duck. She was my 4 x great grandmother, who complicated my research by marrying George Cant, presumably a cousin of some sort. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything about his parents so just how George and Hannah were related prior to their marriage remains a mystery at the moment. If what I have found is correct, Hannah gave birth to at least thirteen children, poor woman.

9th January 1891, Elsie Hardie Raitt was born in Peterculter, Aberdeenshire. A first cousin 3 x removed, daughter of Alexander Raitt and Isabella Hardie.

My mother Millicent Mary Clark was born this day in 1907.   She was named after Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the English suffragist, for her parents were very politically minded.   She was the second daughter of Florence and George, and sadly born disabled.  She went on to have over 30 operations on her feet in the days when operations on club feet were still primitive (nowadays babies are put into plaster casts and cured within a year).

However, she was an energetic, determined child and managed to walk, run and jump, much to the consternation of her parents for she continually broke her calipers in the pre NHS days, which had to be paid for then.    She didn't learn to read or write until she was about 11 - dyslexia running through the family - but trained to be a dressmaker, and made clothes for the rich and famous, including Fanny Craddock, Bebe Daniels, and minor royalty.

Always out-spoken and feisty, she ended her days at the age of 93, out-living her brothers and sister by 15 years .... 'Poor little Milly' as she was known, was made of stern stuff !     I miss her still ....

John Walker Blain my uncle was baptised in Northwich Cheshire in 1903

John Collett my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Wilby, Suffolk in 1737/8.  His father was a tanner by trade.

Edward Hawkins my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Spalding, Lincs in 1700/01

Sarah Hobson my 2 x g.g.aunt died in Almondbury in 1801 aged 8 months.

Elizabeth Gill (nee Pemberton) formerly Tatham my g.g.aunt died in Leek, Staffs in 1904.  When her 2nd husband died in 1894 she was left a substantial amount of money/effects in his will, however, when she died she left barely a third of the amount.  Presumably she had already shared most of the money with her 3 children and 10 grandchildren.

My Uncle Tom died in Burnham on Sea, Somerset in 1955 aged 55.   He and my aunt were not married, in fact he left a wife and children to live with my aunt when they were both in their 30s which is why I’m not giving either his real surname (which my mum told me a few months before she died when she suddenly started talking about secrets from the past) or his adopted surname.  My aunt and uncle never married and had no children of their own, although they did ask my mum if they could adopt me –  she declined!!!   I have very fond memories of my uncle so despite the fact that he left a wife and two young children, I can’t dislike him.

Seth Hobson my g.grandfather was buried in Phillips Park Cemetery, Blackley, Manchester in 1892, 5 days after his death.  He left a widow and 6 children ranging in age from 18 down to 9.

Thomas Tubbs my 3 x g.grandfather, (father of my illegitimate 2 x g.grandfather) was buried in Holbeach, Lincs in 1852.

Died 1948, John Cant, in Hull, a 1st cousin x 3 removed.

More importantly to me is that my nan, Ethel Margaret Raitt was born on January 12th 1897, in Aberdeen. She was a tiny ( 4'11"), extremely feisty woman, with a very sharp tongue. She married John McIntosh Howe, who was feckless and might have qualified as being a lovable rogue, though all I can remember is being a bit scared of both of them when I was a small child.

Wife of yesterdays entry Fanny Elizabeth Towler nee Turner born 1887 somewhere in Spain.
Her father was from Yorkshire and went to Spain with his family (to work). At that time he had 5 children, when he came back he had 6. In total he had 15 children and two wives.
Fanny remarried not long after Robert's death, probably because she had 3 children to bring up. Her new husband was only 14 years older than her eldest child. Top marks to him for taking on the family, I'm told he was a superb step-father.

On this day in 1887, Samuel Greer McEwan the eldest son and first child of my GG grandparents, Robert McEwan and Hannah Greer was born at Longriggend. As Lance Corporal Samuel. G. McEwan of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders he would die in 1914 during the retreat from Mons in WWI only weeks after having been sent to the front. He is remembered at Le Cateau Communal Cemetery and on various war memorials in Scotland as well as in the book of remembrance in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders museum in Stirling Castle. He left behind his wife Agnes Shearer who he had married the year previously. She was pregnant with their first child. The child was named Samuel Mons McEwan but lived for only 3 weeks.

On January 12 1856, James the son of my GG grandparents, James Stein and Elizabeth Pate was born in Linlithgow. He was the first of three sons they would have named James. He died aged only 20 days and is buried alongside several of my Steen, Pate and Auld ancestors in St. Michaels Kirkyard which is just outside the gatehouse of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

On this day 13th January 1874 Vincent McBride, the second child and second son of my GG grandparents James McBride and Mary Ann Clifford was born in Russell Row, Bathgate. He would be the first of two children they had named Vincent and I have yet to find out where his name comes from.

On this day in 1875 my GG grandfather's only brother Henry Steen was being treated for bronchitis in Peshawar, India, now in Pakistan. Peshawar is at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass near the border with Afghanistan, where he would serve a few years later in the 2nd Afghan War. He was a soldier in the 72nd Regiment of Foot, The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders. Unlike other Scottish regiments who wore the kilt, the 72nd wore trews of Royal Stewart tartan.  A few years later while he was still serving the would be amalgamated with the 78th Highlanders to form the Seaforth Highlanders.

Xinia,

My orginal thought was that we'd do this for twelve months and that then we'd all be repeating ourselves. But if new people join in, we get lots of different entries and also, since starting the original thread in November, I have added more dates to members of my family so am waiting for their turn to come around again.

I also thought that we should mention any really important days in history so that we can see what was going on on the days our ancestors were born, married or died. Adds a little extra colour, don't you think?

John Pierce Boyce was born on this day in 1803 in Colnbrook Bucks
All his later siblings were born in Egham where his father set up a bakery.

John started a chemist's shop in Egham in 1824, by 1833 he opened a shop in Chertsey - seemed at some point the Egham shop closed.

He advertised his own concoction named Boyce's Infallible Remedy
Seems advertising standards did not exist in those days

Hi everyone, I'll start from the 12th - I think this is a great idea!

12 January
1866: Helena Brouwer died aged 85 in Haarlem. She was born in Leiden around 1780, the daughter of a vintage clothing merchant, and his weaver wife. Her parents separated, and her father remarried to a much younger half-German. Helena was married and had seven children in Haarlem, where she worked as a shopkeeper in her widowhood, which began in 1822.

1840: Johanna van den Eijkhof, my ancestor and the granddaughter of the above, was born in Haarlem. She was a housewife her whole life, raising four surviving children (including Anna who died aged 15), and losing several in infancy.  She died on 19 November 1899 aged 59, and her husband placed an obituary in the paper which described her as a much loved mother and grandmother.

13 January
1803: Teunisje Elberts van Donkersgoed, my ancestor, was born in Putten. Her parents were farmers in the area. Teunisje married and had 14 children, but not all survived. Those that did became farmers as well, or married farmers. Teunisje was widowed in 1861, and died on 3 July 1862 aged 59, 3 years after her mother.

1850: Catharina Willemina Fiets, my ancestor, died in Welsum aged 76. She was born in Diepenveen, and lived in Welsum in her adult life. She was married to Evert van Putten, and they were both labourers. They had 7 children and were married for almost 54 years, until Catharina's death.

12, 13 and 14 January, including some events that were happening at the time.

12 January 2013

Annie Elizabeth Hawkins (nee Whittaker) my husband’s aunt was born in Denton, Lancs in 1904

Ann Clarke (nee Spraggett)  my husband’s 3 x g.grandmother was privately baptised in Leamington Hastings, Warwickshire on this day in 1800, however she was received into the congregation on 23 January 1800.  I wonder if she was a sickly baby as her 10 siblings were all baptised normally in church. (1799 to 1800 Trade Unions were outlawed).

Mary Smith my 7 x g.g.aunt was baptised in  Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1683/84 (Charles II was on the throne)

Mary Day my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Osbournby, Lincolnshire in 1783 (Britain began to evacuate loyalists from American colonies).

Samuel Mutton my 4 x g.grandfather was buried in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1809 (2 years after Britain abolished slave trade)

13 Jan
Simeon Mumby my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Boston, Lincs in 1822 (Two years after George III died and was succeeded by George IV, and 3 years earlier 11 died at the Peterloo massacre in Manchester).

James Cawthorn my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincs in 1799 (1799 to 1800 Trade Unions were outlawed and in 1801 the Act of Union created the United Kingdom).  He died in 1801 a couple of months before his 2nd birthday.

Arter Peat my 7 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1677/78 (In 1677 Mary Stuart married William of Orange and in 1678 ‘Popish Plot’ to murder Charles II was revealed).

Rebecca Gilchrist my 2 x g.g.aunt died in Boston, Lincs in 1834.  She was just 2 years old. (In 1834 New Poor Law reformed Britain’s social security system)

Anne Collett my 6 x g.grandmother was buried in Eye, Suffolk in 1739/40.  She married aged 18 and had at least 12 children, 9 boys and 3 girls before her husband died when she was only 46, yet she still lived to be 65. How she managed to look after 12 children as a widow I have no idea. (Methodist preachers began their mission to the poor).

14 Jan
Bridget Hobson my 2 x g.g.aunt was born in Denby Dale, Yorks in 1809.  She was the 6th child out of 12 and 3rd daughter of my 3 x g.grandfather.  He was a salter.

Lawrence Dameron my 11th g.g.uncle was buried in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1559.  He was the 3rd son of my 12 x g.grandfather who was Lord of Westerfield Manor.  I’m sure there must have been more children, but I haven’t found any others, although I must say I haven’t looked very hard for others. (On 17 November 1558 Mary died and Elizabeth 1 acceded to the throne, on 24 June 1559 Book of Common Prayer became the only legal form of worship).

Oh dear !     I MUST get my files sorted out !    I've missed this for 16th DECEMBER:-

TO be SOLD by AUCTION, by M. BAKER, at the Swan Inn, in Sturminster Newton, on Wednesday the 16th of December, 1812, precisely at three o'clock in the afternoon, all that Dwelling-House or Tenement, Garden, and excellent Orchard, containing about two acres, situate at a place called Nobcrook, late in the possession of John Trowbridge, and now in hand; with immediate possession.

This is a tenuous one for me, as I think John Trowbridge was a brother or cousin of my great grandmother, Mary Trowbridge .... but so many Mary's, so many John's ....

Its the word 'precisely' that I like !

(And Knobcrook is near Wimborne Minster)

In this day Archibald Douglas was born in Egham in 1844  to James Douglas watchmaker and Martha Ann nee Boyce

Archibald was a baker in 1874 when in Egham he advertised for a Housekeeper in Christian World

He took on a woman named Annie Cheetham (the name may be a clue)
She said that she was to inherit some money and claims he wanted to marry her.
She got lots of goods on the promise of future payment
This was not the first nor the last time she had done this, she was also known as Annie Hastings or Snell or Julia Snell.
She was convicted in 1874. I have no proof , but, I suspect Archibald may have inherited his uncles and aunts business, I think he may have felt it his duty to reimburse the Egham tradesment defrauded - however he never had his own business again, in 1898 he wrote to my gt grandfather that he was at his wits end to get a job so that he could pay the rent.

He however lived until 1924 and was remembered by and pictured with my late Aunt Cicely who remembered him though he died when she was around 6

15th January 1926 - My great uncle Lawrence Sowerby Smith died at the age of seventeen. My mother always said that he had committed suicide but as she was only a year old at the time, I thought I'd check by sending for his death certificate. He died from TB!

The mystery surrounding him is the question of who his father was. My great grandfather died in 1901 at the age of thirty-eight. His widow never re-married but she gave birth to aforementioned Lawrence in 1908. The name Sowerby must come from somewhere  and it certainly doesn't appear anywhere else in my tree so I'm guessing it must be in his father's line.

As for the suicide story, there was anolder brother, John Lawrence Smith who also died very young - maybe one day I shall get round to sending for his death certificate to see if there is any substance to my mum's belief.

My great-grandfather James Jaffray was born on 15th January 1834 at Skeoch, Bannockburn. He was a tenant farmer at Skeoch, He married Christian Dobbie in 1864 and they had ten children. His son John took over the tenancy; there is an advert in The Scotsman 21st February 1917 for sale of Skeoch Farm, at the tiime tenanted by "Mr John Jaffray and others" with entry at Martinmas [November 11th]. This would be the end of farming for the Jaffrays at Skeoch.

On this day 15th January 1874 Vincent McBride, the second child of my GG grandparents James McBride and Mary Ann Clifford was buried in Bathgate. He was born two days previously but lived for only two hours. His tiny body was carried in arms to the grave at a cost of two shillings and sixpence.
14 years later they would name their 8th child Vincent. Their 6th was my great grandfather George, who unlike his unfortunate brother would outlive his wife by 22 years and live to a ripe old age, dying in Falkirk in 1970. However history would repeat itself for George with the birth of his twin daughters. One, Hannah, my grandmother, fortunately for me would survive but her twin sister Mary Ann lived a mere three weeks.

Hannah would grow up and marry my grandfather, yet another George. Her younger sister Mary Jane married George's younger brother Thomas.

What I do have from my great-grandfather is a book, signed by him, called The Young Woman's Companion or Female Instructor. Filled with recipes for just about everything from ink to bleach, and an amazingly thin soup for the poor; it has improving stories of charity and courage shown by women. There is advice on choosing a husband ....There's a digitised copy on Google Books now.

Caroline Whateley Kellock nee Holmes was buried on this day in 1956 in Green-wood Cemetery New York

She was born in 1872 to Frederick Walter Holmes born in England and Elizabeth nee Kerr, a Scot

She married Samuel Keppel Kellock, a lawyer, in 1903.
He had his fingers in a number of pies and was an associate of Charles Hyde and of Mayor Gaynor who was Mayor of New York in 1910 but died a couple of years later. Samuel was indicted for corruption, but as far as I can see, came to England briefly, and never apparently faced justice. According to the family story the marriage was dissolved. Samuel remarried in Utah, but Caroline never remarried.

Caroline was my paternal grandmother's cousin

On this day 16th January 1853 my 3xG grandparents Benjamin Smith and Sarah Cudworth married in St. Peter's parish church in Leeds, which was then in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Both father's were named William. Benjamin's was a woodsman and Sarah's a cordwainer. Their mothers were Hannah and Elizabeth, all three names Hannah, Elizabeth and William are still in use in my family to this day as indeed is my own, George, which has been used by one line of my Scottish ancestors in every generation from at least the late 1600s right down to myself.

Today is also my mother's birthday. She is the youngest of eight children the others being, Agnes, Thomas, Elizabeth, Rachel, George, James and Grace. All are traditional family names and all were born in the same small Scottish village as I myself was born, indeed some in the same house.

On the same day as my 3xG grandparents Benjamin and Sarah were tying the knot, Andre Michelin was born in Paris. With his brother Edouard he would later form the Michelin Tyre Company.

Mary Hobson my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1703/4.  As she was born in April 1703 her record looks really odd as it appears she was baptised before she was born when in fact it’s because the years ran April to March at the time, rather than Jan to December, hence the double dates given for many of my ancestors.

John Lightfoot my 6 x g.g.uncle died in Holme Cultram, Cumberland on this day in 1707/08.  This is another instance of strange dates as he was baptised in April 1707 so it appears he died before he was born/baptised, whereas he was actually 8 months’ old when he died.

My 4-greats grandfather Robert Vazie, gentleman of Hexham in Northumberland, died 16th January 1804 in Hexham.
The Vazies are frustrating as they seem to appear from nowhere in Hexham in the 18th century and the name is now extinct in the UK as far as I can tell. There was a line of Vazies in Wiltshire and in Gloucestershire, also extinct.
I've found Vazies in Alston in Cumberland in the 17th and 18th century but have not linked them to the Hexham line.

My 3-greats grandfather Peter Langdale married my 3-greats grandmother Isabella Mountcure (or other spellings) at St James, Westminster on 16th January 1774. Peter was a coal merchant, with at one time an address just round the corner from the modern-day Society of Genealogists, and didn't do all that well. He was imprisoned for debt at least twice, 1790 and 1801; family legend suggests that he lost substantial amounts of money in gambling. My great-aunts I remember warned my mother to keep an eye on me as it might run in the family.
They had at least 9 children, with some dying young: three were named Isabella, but only one survived; there was also a Rebecca who died young before my 2-greats grandmother Mary Rebecca Langdale was born.

Today I have only one distant ancestor - Ruth Dickenson, baptised Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland in 1710. She was a 7 x great aunt.

She may be distant but I am nevertheless delighted to be able to include her in my tree because finding this line gave me several Westmorland families to add to my tree. I have only lived here for thirty-four years and Kendal people are very dismissive of offcomers but now I can say that I do actually belong in the county! ;D ;D

Thomas Pullen dob unknown was baptised this day in 1828 in Much Cowarne in Herefordshire

He was my gt gt gt uncle and the family was clearly very poor
He and his brother Benjamin (my great great grandfather) were both convicted in 1843 for housebreaking - they stole bread cheese and bacon.
Thomas was convicted again in 1845 of stealing potatoes. He was transported to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) and did not come back.

The family remained poor, the father Thomas sen was convicted(!) of abandoning his family in 1846 and was imprisoned for this!

Thomas jun settled in Tasmania, married and had a family.

On this day,

John Isaac Cockett my g.grandfather was born in Holbeach, Lincs in 1843.  He became a master baker and moved to Manchester sometime between 1861 and 1867 where he was living when he married.  Presumably he decided it would be better for trade in Manchester rather than Lincolnshire.  As my g.gran was living in Lincolnshire in 1861 I guess they must have met in Lincolnshire before moving to Manchester.

David Manton my husband’s 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Long Itchington, Warks in 1762.

William Woodward my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Frodsham, Cheshire in 1808

John Woodward my 3 x g.grandfather (and father of William Woodward above) died in Crowton in 1848.  The cause of death was influenza 5 weeks.  He was a butcher.  The electoral roll of 1837 shows that he owned freehold land and a house in Crowton Marsh, and his will made in 1842 mentions “all those my several freehold cottages or dwelling houses with the gardens, lands and appurtenances in Crowton and Frodsham and all other my real estate whatsoever and wheresoever and also all my household goods and furniture, plate, linen and china, live and dead stock and all other my personal estate and effects” yet when he died 6 years later his assets were only valued at £100!  In his will he said everything had to be sold for the best possible price and after his debts had been paid, (including £90 he owed to a named person), should be divided between his children (or their heirs if any of them predeceased him) “deducting out of the respective shares of my said children, such sum or sums of money with interest thereon as I have at different times advanced to them respectively and which I have set down in a Book and signed the same”.  – I wonder why I never thought of doing that when I “lent” money to my adult children.  ::) ::)

Rebecca Gilchrist my 2 x g.g.aunt was buried in Boston, Lincs in 1834 aged 2.

Ann Collett (nee Bishop) my 7 x g.grandmother was buried in Eye, Suffolk in 1712/13

The value quoted seems to me to be the personal estate and omits the real estate

This is what it states at the bottom of the will

The 15th day of July 1848
John Woodward and Samuel Lewis the Executors in this Will named were sworn in Common form and they also made Oath the personal Estate and Effects of the Testator at the time of his death within the Diocese of Chester were under the value of One hundred pounds.

Before me S William Clarke surrogate
The Testator died the 17th Jany 1848.
Probate issued dated 21 July 1848.

So does personal estate and effects discount real estate?  I thought the value at probate was what tax was paid on - even in 1848.

Lizzie

ps.  My g.gran who died in 1908 didn't leave a will, but administration states that her effects were only £107.13s 9d, yet a distant ancestor sent me a copy of all the houses my g.gran owned at the time of her death and the rent that had been collected, plus what was outstanding, plus bills for work done by local traders for the upkeep of the houses.  So does that mean that any property owned, even if not for personal use was not included for probate?

Cannot claim to be an authority but having seen in the past the same aparent discrepancy in values, it was what I though was the case
I know older wills deal more or less only with personal estate

Thanks, Stonechat.

I wonder what happened to the property my g.gran owned, certainly none of it came to my gran, she lived with us and at the time my mum only rented the shop and living accommodation we had.  I think, as her 2nd son (1st son in an asylum) was given administration I guess he took over the properties.

Better get back on topic.  ::) ::)

On this day 17th January 1792, Agnes, the first child of my 4xG grandparents Peter Wardlaw and Agnes Wallace was born in Hermiston in the parish of Currie. The three lines in the register for her birth tell me much.
Her father Peter died in Hermiston 51 years later and all his children were born there so I know, though he was born a few miles away in Ratho, he spent most of his life in this village.
At his death he was the village postmaster but on this register entry he is a shoemaker, so I know that his son my 3xG grandfather who was also a shoemaker followed his father's profession.
Her parents married 5 months before this birth so her mother was pregnant at the time of marriage.
Agnes was named after her maternal grandmother and the witnesses were John Wardlaw, possibly Peter's father but more likely his elder brother and Robert Bishop. I have yet to find out who Robert was but would bet on him being a relation of the baby's grandmother who was Agnes Bishop.
I don't know for sure but suspect that like my cousin, two great aunts, my great grandmother and a 4xG grandmother, all who were christened Agnes, she like them may have been known as Nancy. This being a pet name for Agnes in Scotland.
Agnes had four brothers John, Peter, Alexander and George and four sisters, Barbara, Margaret, Jemima and Christian and I have the parish register entries for all their births. Her youngest brother George was my 3xG grandfather.

My 4-greats aunt Mary Vazie was born on 18th January 1764 in Hexham, Northumberland. She is one of my mysteries - there is a note on a Victorian family tree that she married Edward Rotheram, Captain of Royal Sovereign at Trafalgar. So far I have no evidence to support this, except that Rotheram was born in Hexham: and what's more he married a wife of another name. Further analysis suggests she might have married Edward's older brother John who was a doctor and born 1751.

My 3-greats grandfather William Jaffray was born 18th January 1790 at Thomasland, Airth, Stirlingshire. He was a nailer but then settled to farming.

Harriet Hobson my 1st cousin twice removed (ie she was my gran’s cousin) was born in Bradford, Manchester in 1877.  She was under the age of 1, when her mother died from abdominal typhus.  Her father married twice more, and she had 5 half siblings.  I think I probably met her as she didn’t die until 1949, 3 months after my gran and certainly my mum used to talk about her.

William Everitt my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Osbournby, Lincs in  1707/08

On this day January 18th 1890 my great great grandfather John Tweedie died in Armadale. He was the son of my 3xG grandparents Robert Tweedie and Agnes Weir and was a coal miner, though like many who had moved to the mines came from farming stock. His wife Rachel was from Fife from a family of seafarers and she was named after her grandmother, and she in turn from her grandmother. The name Rachel continued down to my Aunt Rachel, she of my avatar.

On January 18th 1733 John Tweedie, the brother of my 4xG grandfather Robert Tweedie and son of my 5xG grandparents Robert Tweedie and Katherine Dimmock was born in Carnwarth. There are a lot of Roberts and Johns in my Tweedie line. My great grandmother broke the mould by being an Agnes. She was very petite and known by my mother's generation as wee granny Tweedie.

Oh and on the same day John Tweedie was being born in 1733, the first polar bear was being exhibited in America, it would feel at home outside my door at the moment  ;D

It wasn't of course the world's first polar bear, just the first one exhibited in the USA ...... sorry for any confusion  ;)

19th January 1822, James Augustus Grant Smith was born in Nairn. He is one of a family which has had me tearing my hair out for years. His parents were William Smith, a Mason, in Nairn and Margaret Forsyth, born in Duffus, Morayshire c 1896. They were my 3 x great grandparents. William Smith died somewhere between 1823 and 1841 - my gggrandmother was born in 1824 and he was dead by the time of the 1841 census - and I can find absolutely nothing about him at all. At James A.G. Smith's baptism, the witnesses included one James Augustus Grant of Viewfield, Nairn. He was a local bigwig. The witnesses were all people of not inconsiderable means. So, I have been assuming that my Smith family was not my usual ag'lab, road-mender, fisherfolk variety and that therefore there would be some reference to them somewhere.

No such luck! After his birth in 1822, I can find no further reference to this James. His father is lost without trace and, after 1841, so are his two older brothers, John and Robert. Only my gggrandmother, Margaret Smith remains visible, following her marriage to James Shaw. I have recently, with the help of another RC person, made some progress on a possible brother for William Smith and there was a brief moment when I thought she had actually found William himself. But sadly, the man she found was from Forres, not Nairn and he died in 1849, so that had to be shelved.

Anway, I am getting carried away.....

Also on this day, in 1929, William ( Billy) Milne married Dora Howe in Aberdeen. Dora was my grandfather's sister. I never met them but I have a memory of my nan describing Billy Milne as a bit of a rogue! ;D

I had a marriage but have already mentioned the couple so will instead mention the sad death of Ellen Jackson, daughter of George Jackson and Sally nee Booth, who were from Cheshire but had settled in  the Barnsley area. Sally died in 1872 when young Ellen was 6, George remarried an unknown Ann and George himself died in 1879 when Ellen was 13.

Ellen died in childbirth on 19th Jan 1889 in Leek, Staffs.
She had been living at the 1881 Census with an Aunt in Macclesfield.
She was presumably packed off to Leek to have the baby. I don't have dob for the baby called Kate Ellen Hodgkinson Jackson, so father was presumably called Hodgkinson.

Baby Kate survived and could be born this date too, I don't have dob for her
In 1891 she was with the family in Leek, and later rejoined family in the Barnsley area.

My aunt, Gertrude Anna died 101 years ago aged one. It wasn't until I found her name with the family in the 1911 census that I even realised she existed, as I had never heard her mentioned. I sent for her death certificate and found that she died in St Mary's Hospital, Plaistow from Pneumonic Empyema and heart failure on this day in 1912.

My father was the youngest in the family and would have been 12 years younger than Gertrude - I wonder if he even knew about her, if he did he never said anything.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth, I hope you have a lovely day.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth.

Also on this day 20 January
Joseph Thomas Hobson my g.uncle was born in Manchester in 1880.  On 21 January 1907 he was admitted to Prestwich Asylum where he remained until his death on 30 June 1964.  I know he died there, and as far as I can ascertain he stayed there from 1907.  Unfortunately, although the records are available, the Manchester archivists will not let me have a full copy until 2064 – hmm I’ll be 123 by then.  ::) They did, however, let me have his admission page but only after I told them a family member had a mental problem and I wanted to know if it was hereditary.

Joseph Baildon my 6 x g.grandfather was baptised at Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1659/60.  Over the years, presumably because different parish clerks wrote their surname, and no-one knew how it was spelt, the spelling varies between Baildon, Beldon, Bayldon and Baldon.

John Collett my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Stradbroke, Suffolk in 1762.  He was the 8th of 12 children.

Rebecca Gilchrist was baptised in Boston, Lincs in 1832.  Unfortunately she died just under 2 years later on 13 Jan 1834 and was buried on 17 Jan 1834.

Nancy Middleton my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Millom, Cumberland in 1813

Thomas Phillips Gilchrist my 2 x g.g.uncle died in Hull in 1871.  He was a licensed victualler in Kingston upon Hull and his effects amounted to less than £200, administration granted to his widow Harriett.  He had 8 children including twins, the youngest child was only 3 when Thomas died.

William Spraggett Clarke my husband’s 2 x g.grandfather died in 1882.  In fact he committed suicide by hanging, due to suicidal, temporary insanity induced by excessive alcohol. He was 52 and a silk hatter, so whether the two were connected is unknown.

Gertrude Peacock (nee Lynch) died in Salford in 1964. She was the informant on my 2 x g.grandmother’s death certificate and it took me ages to work out who she was.  In fact she was my maternal grandfather’s cousin.  My mother was always talking about a Nellie Lynch and eventually the pieces fitted together.  Nellie Lynch married Gertrude’s brother.

David Lynch was one of Gertrude (above)’s brothers.  He died in Manchester in 1971.  He was one of the mourners listed at my gran's funeral in 1949.

Thomas Lenton Gilchrist my 4th cousin once removed was buried in Boston in 1842.  He was a cousin of Thomas Phillips Gilchrist my 2 x g.g.uncle above.

Elisabeth Stanton (nee Northern) my 4 x g.grandmother was buried in 1833in Heckington, Lincs.  Her husband was a wheelwright, but all I know about Elisabeth is that she had 12 children.

Joan Dameron (nee Mynter) my 12 x g.grandmother died in 1564 in Westerfield, Suffolk.  Her burial records calls her “Old Joan, Lady of Westerfield”

I have many with anniversaries of one sort or another on 20th January, but the most interesting is Dr Thomas Jones Dyke, who died on 20th January 1900. He was the husband of my great-great aunt Eliza Evans. He was born in 1816 in Merthyr Tydfil and became Medical Officer of Health, working hard to enforce sanitary laws and therefore to reduce cholera and other killers.

A report on his work 1852-67 was published in the BMJ November 1868:

A Great Saving of Life
It is seldom that we can find so striking and compact an example of the advantages of intelligent care for the public health as is afforded by the recent history of Merthyr Tydfil. Since 1850, the Local Board of Health have energetically devoted themselves to the improvement of the drainage and water supply, and the purification of the houses and soil. Their medical officer, Mr T.J. Dyke, now sums up the results as follows. In Merthyr, in 1852, the death-rate was 30 in a thousand; in 1867 it was reduced to 20 5/10. Of children under one year old, the deaths to 10,000 living were in 1852, 78; in 1867, 58. In the former year, the proportionate death-rate of children under five years to all deaths was 527 in the thousand; in 1867, it was 409. The mortality from all tubercular diseases was reduced from 66 to 48 of 10,000 living; while from that form of the disease known as consumption, the rate of death was lessened from 38 to 26 in 10,000 living. The numbers of persons who at their deaths had attained the age of 70 and upwards were, in 1852, 16 of 10,000 living; in 1867 they amounted to 24. And, lastly, the mean duration of human life, as measured by the average age of death, was increased from 17½ years in 1852 to 27½ years in 1867. He adds: "Many thoughtlessly ignore the benefits resulting from the efficient administration of the sanitary laws; they regard with horror the one or more shillings in the pound levied as health-rate, and wholly forget to observe that the poor's rate (as far as the cost of maintenance of the poor is concerned) has been more than proportionately lessened during the last twenty years; their memories no longer recall the sights and smells which in former days made walking in the streets of Merthyr a noisome and offensive duty; they do not think of the abundant water-supply to their houses, nor remark the infrequency of funerals. Sickness and death do not now, as of old, hurry both young and middle-aged to untimely graves. There is now as fair a prospect of a lengthened, if well-spent, life in your well-cleaned, plentifully watered, thoroughly drained town, as in any borough in this wide realm. We owe these priceless blessings to your sustained exertions in the administration of the laws put under your authority; and for these exertions, long continued and laborious, you will feel that you have your reward in that your works have already borne, and will continue to bear, fruit a thousandfold."

On January 20th 1855 my 3xG grandfather Robert Tweedie died in Whitburn, giving me one of those coveted 1855 certificates. He was the first son of Robert Tweedie, a farmer and Margaret Somerville and named after his grandfather, yet another Robert Tweedie. He had been living in Whitburn for 14 years and left behind his widow my 3xG grandmother Agnes Weir (known as Nancy). His children were Robert, James, David, Grace, William, John (my GG grandfather) and Margaret. Two of his children Robert and William predeceased him and he was buried in Whitburn.

On 20th January 1826, Jemima Wardlaw, the second child and second daughter of my 4xG grandparents Peter Wardlaw and Agnes Wallace married Alexander Harper in Currie. She was 33 and he 34. I don't know as yet why she was named Jemima, she should by rights have been a Barbara. The first daughter Agnes was named after Agnes Wallace's mother and third Barbara after Peter Wardlaw's mother, but for some reason I have a Jemima.

On the same day my 3xG grandfather Robert was leaving, in Paris French Romantic composer Ernest Chausson was making an entrance. He was a one time friend of my favourite composer, Claude Debussy and is buried in Pere Lachaise cemetery, a fascinating place that I have had the pleasure of strolling round.

My 6x great grandfather John Palmer died this day in 1751 in Oundle NOrthants

Sorting out John Palmers in Oundle was tricky
There were over a long period a number of baptisms where father was named as John Palmer, John Palmer sen, and John Palmer jun, and the person who is John Palmer jun at one date may be the sen at a later date.

I could not assign all the children to any one individual

On this day in 1693 my 7 x great grandmother, Margaret Lonsdale was born in Spennithorne, Yorkshire.

In 1892, my great aunt, Elizabeth Anne Smith ( Aunt Lizzie) was born in Middlesbrough. I didn't know her but my mum used to talk about he quite a lot, and fondly.

In 1958, my great grandmother, Jane Raitt ( nee Milne) died in Aberdeen. She apparently regared my grandad, her son-in-law, as a bit of a bad lot so although there was no falling out, my there was a certian distancing between my garndparents and the rest of the Raitt family. Shame - I'd have liked to have known them.

And most importantly to me, On this day, two years ago, my gorgeous and much adored grandson was born. Happy Birthday my lovely boy, I shall see you tomorrow.xxx

My first cousin three times removed Thomas Simons was born 21st January 1826 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His family had moved from England and moved on again to settle in Texas. The Mexican War followed the annexation of Texas, and this is the newspaper report about Thomas' involvement in the War:
Niles' National Register, May 29, 1847 Thomas Simons - The Mexicans have ceased their murders on the road, but have dared to attack a rear party coming down with the last train from Monterey, and in the attack mortally wounded one of Capt. Grey's men - a Mr. Thomas Simons of Texas - a young man very respectably connected, a great promise, and deservedly by all who knew him, we speak of him from a perfect knowledge of his many good qualities. Mr. Simons was some distance in the rear of the train, in company with three others; all unarmed but himself; when they were set upon from the chaparral and seven Mexicans charged upon them. The fight had to be maintained a lot by young Simons, his companions deserting him and the firing commenced. An escort ball broke his thigh and he fell from his horse. The Mexicans closed round and fired him whilst on the ground but with a revolving pistol he killed one, disabled a second, and kept the rest at bay until his companions charged in advance, came to the rescue, drawn hither by the firing. He was taken to Calvaro - his leg was nearly shot off, and it is supposed impossible that he can recover. It needs no prophet to foretell how dire it will be.

My great x 2 grandmother Maria Elizabeth Hoare was born this day in 1807 in Reigate, Surrey. She married James Moore Penfold, a solicitor from a well known and wealthy family of solicitors and architects in 1828. He then died 4 years later at the age of 25, leaving her a widow with 2 young children. She then married my gx2 grandfather, Richard Hayward, a gardener - what a difference that must have been. They had 6 children. I wasn't absolutely certain it was the same person until I found her and Richard as witnesses to the marriage of her eldest daughter Maria to James Greatly and then found their daughter Ann Maria Greatly with the Haywards in the 1861 census.

I don't know which FH program you have.  I have Legacy and the only way I've found to get births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials is to go to Search, then click on Search and Replace.  From there I click on Dates - Births, then put in the date 21 Jan for instance and start.  If it finds anything I just make a note of it and then press skip and it goes to the next item.  Then I repeat the exercise for baptisms, deaths, burials and marriages (which for some reason are further down on the search list).  I'm sure there must be a quicker way of doing it - any Legacy experts out there?

When I've got my list for the day, I then bring them up individually on Legacy and add anything of interest, including their relationship to me.

Today, in 1818, my 3x gt grand uncle Alexander Frew was born in Dreghorn, ayr.

In 1826, my 4x gt grand uncle John Reeve married Ann Langridge in Honingham, Norfolk

Lizzie,

For Legacy go to reports on top bar, click all reports, under miscellaneous reports click calendar list report, tick whichever month you want and preview....this brings up all marriages, births and bap/chr for each day in that month........unfortunately not the deaths and burials!

My 5 X Great grandfather John BOND died in Denton Lancashire in 1806

At his marriage in 1758, John was from Tatham in the Forest of Bowland in the North of Lancashire.

Of his six children, I only have baptisms for two, at Manchester Cathedral.
John settled in Denton where he was described as a yeoman and steel mill cutter. Subsequent Bonds were hatters, the commonest occupation there.
John left a will and together with death duty document listed his surviving sons.

James was working on a farm helping with the threshing when he managed to fall into the threshing mill and got his leg badly cut. He was taken to one of the farm cottages where an old woman cleaned his leg using water straight from a water barrel, as a result the leg became septic and had to be amputated.

On this day in January,

Isaac Whittaker my husband’s g.g.uncle was born in Denton, Lancashire in 1835

Samuel Bailden my 6 x g.g. uncle was baptised in Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1670/71

William Sharp my 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised in St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincs in 1829

Cecilie Dameron my 9 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1558.  When her father died in 1596/7, it was stated that he only had one daughter, so as my 9 x g.grandmother was obviously alive, it would appear that Cecilie died sometime before 1596/7.  There was also a brother who was born and died in 1561 aged about 1 week.  I’ve tried, with the help of Rootschatters to find what happened to Cecilie but without success.

Fanny Hobson (nee Smith) wife of my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1770

Thomas Postlethwaite my 4 x g.grandfather died in old Park, Dalton in Furness, Lancs in 1841.  The probate to his will stated “the whole of the lands, chattels, hereditaments which the said testator Thomas Postlethwaite died possessed within the Archdeaconary of Richmond in the diocese of Chester ... were under three hundred pounds” which is interesting as he left lots of bequests to his wife and children which totalled far more than £300.

Lizzie Olive Priest  my 3rd cousin once removed died in Watchfield, Berkshire in 1960

Benjamin Collett my 2 x g.g.uncle was buried in St Peter & St Paul, Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1862.  He was 59 and the father of 8 children, by two wives (not at the same time!).

Thomas Benson and Janet Wilkinson my 7 x g.grandparents married in Holme Cultram in 1693/94.  He was born in 1666 and took his mother’s surname, although there is a man listed on the baptismal record as “alleged father”.

On January 22nd 1902 my GG grandmother Hannah Greer's sixth child and third daughter died aged 6 months. On the death certificate she is named as Mary Skelton Greer or McEwan and I don't think she was the child of her husband, my GG grandfather Robert McEwan. I know on the 1911 census she is named as the daughter of her second husband. On the death certificate, Hannah is named as the mother but after that it says, husband of Robert McEwan and doesn't name him as the father.
Likewise the previous child Agnes, who was born in New Monkland poorhouse, I think was not Robert's daughter. He had gone to America in 1894 and though he seems to have come and gone several times, on his son Alexander's military records, Agnes unlike her siblings is not enumerated as a full sister.
Hannah would remarry in 1903 declaring herself a spinster. Robert remarried in the same year declaring himself a widower despite the fact his first wife was very much alive and would be for another twenty years producing three more children with her second husband. Robert emigrated for good in 1911 and died in the USA in 1941.

I wonder how they feel about their GG grandson opening the cupboard and revealing all these skeletons.

22nd January 1758 my 4-greats grandparents William Evans and Phoebe Male married in Kingswinford. I have no information on Phoebe's family; the Evans were already involved in coal and iron in the Broseley area, and the son of this marriage, John Evans, moved to South Wales to set up an iron works in Ebbw Vale.

My great-grandparents William Parish Barrett and Mary Hannah Garnsey Meade were married on 22nd January 1861 in North Curry, Somerset. William had qualified as a veterinary surgeon and served with the East India Company army, but by this time had returned to England permanently. I don't know how he made his money, but there is no evidence that he ever worked as a vet after his return - that is from 1857 to 1894 when he died

Some interesting stories on here.  I wonder if our ancestors were as worried about "skeletons in the cupboard" as much as we think they were.  At least until the early 1920s, I think everyone knew what was going on and didn't worry too much about it.  It was later on in the 20th century that everyone got so uptight about illegitimate children, divorce etc. now, thankfully, the tide has turned - although some people would say it has gone too far.

My great x 3 grandfather Edward Jackson died on this day in  at 78 Black Road Macclesfield according to his death certificate. I believe this should be Windmill Road. His House/shop was on the corner.

Edward started off as a miner, then became a provision dealer.
I have spent a considerable time tracing his ancestry
Censuses give different information, birthplace in Manchester or Macclesfield, in 1851 he is called Oswald, and birthdates between 1805-1809 ignoring 1871 which has 1815.

A further clue was naming of Ellen Swindells as sister in law in his will.
Ellen was previously married to James Jackson and gave Oliver has her maiden name when she remarried Samuel Swindells.
Her birthplaces and dates vary wildly. It seems likely she was born in Brandside on the Staffs/Derby border. I have also considered that James could have had two wives called Ellen, and remarried another Ellen between censuses.
I have one possible birth for Edward in Manchester, one I have discounted for James in Macclesfield.

Anyway Edward was only described as a miner while still in that area, but three generations of Jacksons after him were mine managers, though my grandfather had to give up mining after being in a pit fall.

On this day

Mary Elizabeth Mumby my 1st cousin twice removed was born in 1881.  Interestingly her father’s sister who was my g.grandmother married her mother’s brother who was my g.grandfather.  Sadly Mary Elizabeth died aged 2 months from Bronchitis, her mother died 2 months later from softening of the brain of 2 months duration.  I’m not sure what this is, or whether there was any connection to the birth and death of Mary Elizabeth.  Another couple of months later, Mary Elizabeth’s brother also died of peritonitis leaving his father at the age of only 24 having lost not only his wife but both his children.

Charles Albert Heaton my husband’s g.g.uncle was born at 7 Oxford Street, Chelsea in 1840.  The family was still in London in 1851 but by 1861 had moved to Manchester.  I can’t imagine why as Charles’ father was a horse nail maker both in London and Manchester and I don’t believe there were more horses in Manchester than London.  As Charles’ mother came from Ely, Cambs it’s not as if she wanted to go to her home town.

Ann Tubbs my 4 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Haddenham, Cambs in 1767

Richard Taylor my 3rd cousin twice removed died in Warrington in 1920

Henry Brand my 2 x g.g.uncle  died in New Sleaford, Lincolnshire in 1820 aged 4 years.  In October the same year, another son was born who they also called Henry.  This was a common occurrence in this family.  They also had 3 sons called William, one died aged a couple of days, the next one died aged 10 and the third William became my 2 x g.grandfather and died aged 40.

Mary Salter my 1st cousin 3 times removed died in Tasmania in 1942.  She was the cousin of the father, and aunt, of Mary Elizabeth Mumby who was born this day in 1881.

Martin Batty my 5 x g.grandfather was buried at St John the Baptist Church, Penistone in 1788.  From an obligation to marry signed by him and his future son in law, I know that Martin was a clothier, which I think was someone who sold clothes made by the local tailor.

On 23rd January 1803 my 4xG grandparents John Brown and Janet Sneddon Gibb married in Bo'ness. Their son Walter, my 3xG grandfather was named after Janet's father and the Sneddon part of her name comes from her mother. There was a lot of intermarrying in Bo'ness between my Brown, Gibb and Sneddon families.
John like his son Walter was a blacksmith and two of his sons, Thomas and Alexander, despite commencing their working lives as shoemakers, it seems, from their wills ended up owning businesses, shops and properties all over Bo'ness. Alas on their deaths, all this would bypass my 3xG grandfather Walter and go to his sister Janet Gibb Brown and the children and in-laws of  Thomas and Alexander.
My 4xG grandparents John and Janet, their sons, Thomas and Alexander and Alexander's wife, Janet Cuthill, lie buried together in Bo'ness where their monument still exists and which I was lucky enough to visit last summer.

On 23rd January 1852, Janet Pate, the 5th child of my 3xG grandparents John Pate and Isabella Scott married in Linlithgow. On the previous years census, Robert is listed as a Lodger at the house of Janet's mother so it's easy to see how they met. Like my above Browns, Janet's parents have a memorial in Linlithgow and once again I paid my respects last year. On a lovely sunny day I stood and wondered about their lives and also wondered if they were aware their 3xG grandson was visiting.

On 23rd January 1886, Janet, the last of my GG grandparents, Peter Wardlaw and Janet Brown's (daughter of Walter) children was born in South Street Armadale. She was known as Jennie and was 11 years younger than her nearest sibling and 22 years younger than her eldest, my great grandfather, George.
On the 1901 census she is at home aged 15 with her father and is listed as a housekeeper. Her mother is missing and I fear already in Larbert Lunatic Asylum, where she would die two years later. I have yet to find out why she was there.
South Street has played some part in the comings and goings of my family. Jennie was born at number 40, my grandmother was born at number 41, my GG grandfather, John Tweedie died at number 20 and his wife, Rachel Brown (no relation to the aforementioned Browns) died at number 21.

Today in 1881 James Henry Bull was born in Bradford, Lancashire to the much travelled miner George Bull. George had been born in Somerset married a girl from Llangatwg Brecnockshire in Pontypridd Glamorgan They had children in Crickhowel,Beaufirt back to Crickhowell then Lancaster on to Wigan finally returning to Llangattock it is amazing the distances our miners went to find work. I doubt they had many wordly goods to travel with probably a couple of matress covers to stuff with straw and a cooking pot

Ellen Bagshawe (nee Hudson) was baptised in Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1584/85.

Lucy Stanton my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1808.  Unfortunately, she died 17 days later on 10 February.

Priscilla Peat my 7 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1685/86

Nellie Hobson my 1st cousin twice removed died in Crumpsall Hospital, Manchester in 1956.  She was the 2nd daughter of my g.g.uncle’s 2nd marriage.  Mum used to talk about her quite often, and it’s not inconceivable that I met her.  In those days, my mother’s family all seemed to keep in touch, 1st cousins, cousins removed, 2nd cousins etc. even though they’d moved away from their childhood homes, but not too far so that keeping in touch had become unusual.  Nellie was my maternal gran’s cousin and my gran lived with us until her death in 1949.

Gertrude Lynch another 1st cousin twice removed was buried in Agecroft Cemetery, Salford in 1964.  Gertrude was my maternal grandfather’s cousin.

William Benjamin Brand my g.g.uncle married Mary Ann Hanley in The Cathedral Parish Church, Manchester in 1875.  This is another couple in my family where the sister of the groom married the brother of the bride, in this case at the same Parish Church only 4 weeks earlier

My grandfather George Andrew died on this day in 1963 aged 82. As my father was the youngest of 6, I dont remember my grandfather as anything but old. He was the eldest son of parents who came to England from Germany before he was born. Although his father was a pork butcher, my grandfather became a typewriter mechanic and was very good with his hands. I remember that one Christmas he made me a kaleidoscope that was the envy of my friends. He was also a very keen amateur photographer and I have a beautiful photo that he took of my grandmother. I cant ever remember seeing my grandfather without a pipe in his mouth or in his hand, and to this day if I ever smell pipe tobacco I think of him.

On January 24th 1929 my great great grandmother Hannah Greer died in Crosscroes, Muiravonside. She was born in Scotland but both her parents were Irish, her father's family came from Ballinderry in County Antrim. She had something of a hard life, her first marriage broke down and her husband remarried and emigrated to America. Her 5th child was born in a poorhouse and she lost two of her three sons by her first husband in WWI, and the third was missing presumed dead for some time. She seems to have found some kind of life with her second husband and had three children with him. His family drive me to distraction as I am having a brickwall moment with them. All I know is he was born in England and that his father was at some time a soldier and later a merchant. But given that his father was in the army, John could have been born in England simply because he was stationed there.

On 24th January 1868 Alexander Wardlaw, one of the only two surviving  children of my 3xG grandparents George Wardlaw and Agnes Torrance, married Isabella Wilson in Shotts. The other survivor was my GG grandfather. His mother died young as did his brother Thomas. His sister died in childbirth with her first child and his father died in a poorhouse. Times sure were hard back then.

Lydart you can see why I'm called trees  ;D
Today the 4th of 12 children was born to James Froud poor little William lived but a few days. James and Ann only lost two children in childhood both little boys named William,( know idea why they were so determined to have a William it is not a name in either of their families before,) so sad but I can tell you a bit about his dad. James was a first child and probably followed the common practice of the time in being born at his grandparent's home. He became apprenticed to a shoemaker or cordwainer and in 1841 was living in East Challow but not in the family home. By 1844 he had moved to Childrey, set up in business at Anne's home (Yew Tree Cottage) and the first of their 12 children had been born. Later he moved the family to The Crown and became a beer retailer as well as a shoemaker. We know he also had 2 cows and sold milk to the villagers. He taught all his sons to be shoemakers and this must have been a cheap source of labour for some years.
James was a master craftsman, employing 1 man, and for 10 years had an apprentice, John Smith from Ardington, a slow learner perhaps as most apprenticeships were for 7 years. Of his children, John was a shoemaker all his life, finally living in the Almshouses at Lyford (see The Length of the Road by Maud Ody), Mary (Froud) Boucher is also mentioned in this book. One of John's sons returned to Childrey to marry the Landlady of The Hatchet and he himself became the licensee. His son, Ken, married a Canadian girl and they live in Quebec.

Oops !     I missed another .... 7th January, 1924, my father was apprenticed to be a shoemaker.   I have his indenture papers, which were a real find as they have given me proof that my father was definitely illegitimate, and that his father is therefore 'unknown' .... and to my mind perhaps giving evidence to family 'heresay' that his father was (perhaps) an Italian sailor !!  (His mother was known to have been 'a bit of a goer' !!   :o )

My fathers had two birth certificates; one issued at the time of his birth, with no father named, and another issued about 25 years later, giving Alfred Poplett as his father.   Hmmm !   That's not verified by the apprenticeship papers .... where 'son' and 'father' have been crossed out all the way through, with 'ward' and 'guardian' substituted.

I haven't found many original documents, so this one is extra special !

"Our monarch's hindmost year but ane, was five and twenty days began!" whien, in a great storm in 1759, was born the poet Robert Burn's. A facial reconstruction from his skull has just been carried out by Dundee Uni', sorry no link.
He did say something about "rather being at the making of a hundred than the destruction of one" in regards to mankind, but then, he might just have been "a bit of a goer", like Lydart's grannie. I'm sure they'd have got along like a house on fire.

John Pemberton my 3 x g.g.uncle married Mary Barber in Lower Peover, Cheshire in 1795

Charles Cockett  my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1791

Thomas Phillips Gilchrist my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised on this day in 1828 in Boston, Lincolnshire.  I reported his death on 20 January –he was 43 at the time of his death. I do know he and his elder sister, Alice Gilchrist - my 2 x g.grandmother -  were living in Skirbeck in 1841 but not with their parents.  Their mother had died and their father had re-married.  They were living in the house of a rich widow called Mary Phillips with their youngish aunt who was shown as female servant.  My 2 x g.gran was a seamstress aged 14 and Thomas' occupation wasn't shown but I think he was probably a schoolboy.  It would seem that Mary Phillips was probably a widowed friend of Thomas and Alice's grandparents and probably had no children of her own as she left both Thomas and Alice (and their aunt) substantial bequests, including properties in her will.  It will be noted that Thomas had Phillips as a 2nd name, why is not known apart from the fact that his grandparents seem to have been friends with Mary Phillips.  What is known is that the name has passed through the generations since then (although not down my direct line), Alice my 2 x g.gran even gave one of her daughters the name of Mary Phillips.

Ann Smith Harper my husband’s 4 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Ormskirk, Lancashire in 1867.  Her father, my husband’s 5 x g.grandfather was a mathematician at the time of his son’s birth in 1772, but a few years later that had changed to mathematical instrument maker.  I wonder why it took until my husband for the mathematical genes to go down through their family?

William Benjamin Brand my g.g.uncle (and a son of Alice Gilchrist mentioned in the piece about Thomas Phillips Gilchrist) died in Manchester in 1904 of Acute Bronchitis and pleurisy, one day after his 29th wedding anniversary.

Charles Frederick Salter my 1st cousin 3 times removed died in Tasmania in 1915

Sarah Gaunt my 3 x g.g.aunt was buried at St John the Baptist Church, Penistone in 1758, she was aged 21 months.

Thomas Postlethwaite my 4 x g.grandfather was buried at St Mary Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1841.  He was 78.  His will was very explicit as to what he left and to whom he bequeathed money, chattels, land etc. but he also put into his will that if any of his daughters died and their husbands re-married then they should have no further benefit under the Will but considered and taken as if actually dead, he obviously didn't want any of his wealth passing to 2nd wives and their families. The will, usefully, mentioned the full names of his daughters’ husbands and also the fact that one of his daughters had an illegitimate son, so I need to follow those names up and see what I can find out about any of them.

Mary Ann Chorley my half 2nd g.g.aunt died in Gosforth, Cumberland in 1828 aged about 1 year.  She was the eldest of 3 illegitimate children my 3 x g.grandmother had before she married my 3 x g.grandfather and produced 5 more children.  It would seem that 3 x g.grandmother was a bit of a girl  ::) as each of her 3 illegitimate children were born to different fathers.

Beatrice Mary WYATT was born in 1915 she was one of mum's cousins. The story is that one of mum's aunts went to Australia where she opened an hotel. After a while she returned home to ask all her siblings to let theiryoungest daughter return with her where they would live a wonderful life in a lovely rural sunny place. One brother had but one daughter so said no one sister had twin daughters and said no to spliting them, My grand pater had two daughters mum being the youngest but he had 12 little boys10 younger than mum so he said no he needed his daughter to help look after the boys so that left Beatrice the second daughter of a sister off she went to live a life of hard work as her aunts servant in the hotel. She told her story in a newspaper on her golden wedding when she was still in Australia and very happy

Abraham Hobson my 3 x g.g.uncle was born in Bridge End, Lockwood, Yorkshire in 1786
Sarah Hobson, twin sister of Abraham and my 3 x g.g.aunt was also born in Bridge End, Lockwood, Yorkshire in 1786.  I have no idea who was the first born, although Abraham’s name is listed first in the parish record of their baptism.  Their father my 4 x g.grandfather was a shopkeeper at the time of the twins’ baptism, although earlier he had been a drysalter.  His will showed he had a shop as well as a dyehouse.
Thomas Tubbs my 5 x g.grandfather was baptised in Sutton, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire in 1733/34.  He was 5 years old at the time of his baptism, but I cannot find any younger siblings who may have been baptised at the same time so I have no idea why is baptism was delayed. Stephen Spraggett my husband’s 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Leamington Hastings in 1797.  He was the 11th of 15 children and died aged nearly 15 in December 1812.
Jane Stanton a very distant 1st cousin 5 times removed was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire in 1837.  Apart from her birth and baptism, the only other info I have about her is that she died in Australia.
John Collett an even more distant 2nd cousin 5 times removed was baptised in Wilby, Suffolk in 1783.  As an adult he became a tailor.

Barbara Wardlaw, the third child of my 4xG grandparents was born in Hemiston on 27th January 1795. She didn't marry until she was 30, to Alexander Brown in Edinburgh in 1825. Barbara was named after her maternal grandmother Barbara Smith. All I know of this Barbara is she was the daughter or Rodger Smith of Newlands in the parish of Kirkliston. Her grandfather John Wardlaw was also from Kirkliston parish and infuriatingly the parish recorder for births at the time decided to only record the father's names.

Tenant Stanton my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1812.  He was the 9th of 12 children of my 4 x g.grandparents born over a period of 22 years.  Not unusual, but poor  mother.  ::)

William Mutton my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Thorney, Cambridge in 1739/40

Mary Benson my 1st cousin 5 times removed was baptised in Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire in 1787

Ann Cockett my g.g.aunt died at Penny Hill, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1845.  She was only 6 months old and died of Mesenteric Disease.  Apparently Mesenteric Disease is TB of the lymph glands inside the abdomen caused by drinking unpasteurised milk.  This makes sense as her mother, my 2 x g.grandmother died the day Ann was born of a uterine haemorrhage and I guess her dad thought he was doing his best by giving her, possibly, fresh cows’ milk.  :'(

My 3 x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth White was born today, in 1770, in Moor Crichel, Dorset.   She married one of my John Williams, also in Moor Crichel, and their son Isaac was my 2 x Gr. grandfather who was kicked to death by a carthorse.     I haven't found out much about her except that she had a daughter, Mary Anne, as well as Isaac, but now the Dorset records are on Ancestry,  I may find more.

Also this day, Wilf (Wilfred) Quering was born in 1941.   He was the husband of my Canadian 2nd cousin J. (cant mention her as she's still alive) but Wilf sadly died in 2006.   They had married when J. was just 16, and were school sweet-hearts.   Wilf was born in Saskatchewan; I think his father (surname spelled Quiring) went to Canada from Poland.   I met and stayed with Wilf and J. and Wilf was a lovely man, with a great line in awful, groanworthy funny stories.

My 3xG grandmother, Isabella Scott, died at 3. a.m. on 28th January 1857 at 199 High Street Linlithgow. Apparently 3. a.m. was or is known as the 'Devil's Hour' as between 3. a.m and 5. a.m. is a time when many ill people die. It is said that this is because this is when the human immune system is at it's lowest ebb. I don't know if this is true but Isabella certainly went at that time. The informant was her son-in-law Robert Wood, who had married her daughter Janet 5 years previously.
She had married my 3xG grandfather John Pate or Peat in 1810. He was a shoemaker by trade as were many in Linlithgow at the time as the town produced boots for the army. At the time of marriage he was also a drummer in the Linlithgow Militia.
Her parents were John Scott, a farmer and Janet Henderson, though my cousin John in Australia, who is also descended from them, and myself think he might have been David Scott, also a farmer. The children's names bear out John and Janet, but there is also a son David and a couple named David and Janet that we believe could be her parents. It's still a work in progress. I have three Scott lines, this one and two from Fife and all are troublesome. Still I am lucky in that I know who all their children married. I am descended from their youngest daughter Elizabeth.
She is buried with her husband in St. Michael's Kirkyard in Linlithgow, just outside the gates of Linlithgow Palace. The memorial stone was erected by their eldest son George. It is the stone in the lower left hand of this photograph. I found several members of my Linlithgow families lying about this churchyard and I am sure there are many more in unmarked graves. It's something of a spiritual place for myself.

Family of my RC friend Skoosh lie close by marked by the stone to the right of mine in the photo, in the row behind.

My 3xgt. aunt, Ann Elizabeth Pain, born 1816 in Woolwich;  daughter of John and Elizabeth (still not found their marriage!). I think Ann was their first born.  She married, quite late in life, a widower, Hugh Hughes. They marry in 2 different churches on 2 separate dates......can't work that out! They had one son who is mentioned in Ann's Will as a "lunatic now in Darenth Asylum" but I have not been able to trace him.  Ann died in 1899, 26 years after Hugh, spending all her life in the Woolwich area.

Harry Dawson my husband’s grandfather was born in Hulme, Manchester in 1872.  For some unknown reason on the 1881 census, the family are shown with Harry's maternal gran’s maiden name.  He was even registered at school in 1879 under the wrong name.   I don’t think they were in debt and hiding from debtors as his father was never out of work and in 1881 not only did they have his father working, he also had his mother’s half sister aged 19 living with them who was also in work.  I wonder if it was the half sister who didn’t want to be found, although on the census she did give her real name.  By 1891 they had reverted back to their real name of Dawson.

Eva Willis my aunt was born in Manchester in 1916.  She and my uncle married on 27 January 1940.

Thomas Woodward my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire in 1775.   Unfortunately, he died in September of the same year.

Is it not something of a national disgrace that Queen Mary's birthplace still lies roofless, when you think of the vast sums spent on palaces elsewhere and the massive revenue raked off from North Sea Oil.
No monarch, from James VI to the present queen, would have sat on a throne but for the fact of this birth in this place.

Bests,

No monarch, from James VI to the present queen, would have sat on a throne but for the fact of this birth in this place.

It is indeed Skoosh, I thought much the same when walking through it. I felt a definate pull to Lithgae and visited several times last summer and will again this year.

Joshua Joyce married Mary Chitty today at St Mary's Guildford, Surrey in 1697. They were both from Godalming though and my 6 x great granparents.
He was a baker who leased the building facing the market house in 1700 - where the famous pepperpot is today. This (the bakery) is now Godalming museum. Mary is unfortunately a mystery. Chitty is one of the commonest names in Godalming. I have not manage to trace her.

Another marriage took place today between John Wheeler and Mary Seymour in 1687 in Newent, Gloucs. John was a mason who in 1701 lived in a building called The Lambe in New Street Newent. At the marriage Mary was reported to be of Bromsberrow but have not traced her. They were my 7 x great grandparents

On January 30th 1885, Henry Steen, the only brother of my great great grandfather James was having a medical that would see him invalided out of the army after 18 years and 362 days service that took him to Egypt, India, Afghanistan and the East Indies. His notes on the day read,

'varicose veins: he states it originated during the Afghan campaign and has increased. The disability first came to notice at Parkhurst about a year ago. It is the result of his service in India and during the Afghan campaign. It was caused by the heavy marching during the campaign'

His ailments during his army service were many but he survived to marry one of the nurses on the Isle of Wight where he died in 1911. I know lots more about Henry but will save it for another day.

The British were still in Egypt at this time and just four days previously General Gordon had been killed at Khartoum in Sudan. Lucky for Henry that he wasn't there as the entire garrison of 7000 was wiped out.

My 1st cousin, once removed, Matilda Florence Crumpton, born in 1895 in Shoreditch to Alfred Edward Ernest and Matilda (nee Barham);  their first child. Registered and baptised as Matilda Florence she then chose to switch and marry as Florence Matilda (a trend often followed by females in that line).  She married Sidney George Arnold in 1915 in Dalston; he survived WW1 and they had 2 children.  Matilda/Florence died in 1982 in Hackney having lived all her life in London.

I had yet to make an appearance but did watch a documentry recently on that flood, with some gripping eyewitness accounts.

On January 31st 1714 my 5xG grandfather John Wardlaw was baptized in Kirknewton, he was a twin, as was my grandmother. I know he had at least two older siblings, Agnes and Jannet. Kirknewton baptism records at the time are vague when it comes to mothers, well they are more than vague, they just don't mention them, though I am fairly sure who she was. I am still popping back to this one now and again to try and prove it. His father was another John and was a servant to one John Gray, a portioner in Kirknewton. A portioner, I take to be someone who owns a parcel of land that was once part of a larger estate. The same John Gray was one of the witnesses to the baptism.

and.......

On January 31, 1714, Russian Emperor Peter I, aspiring to boost the literacy level amongst teenage members of the nobility, issued his decree only allowing the young men to get married after they had completed their studies

Lily Blain (nee Cockett) my mother’s sister (my aunt) was born in Manchester in 1904.  She died tragically in 1967 aged 63, from a brain aneurysm whilst playing bridge.  I was told that when my uncle called to collect her from the bridge club, he was told she’d died.

John Alden my g.gran’s first husband was baptised in Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1825.  Although I said that John was my g.gran’s first husband, it is highly probable that he was her only husband and that she and my g.grandfather were never married.

Eliza Mumby my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised this day in 1814.  I mentioned her yesterday as she died and was buried on 30 January 1818.

William Dye my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Newton Flotman, Norfolk in 1830

Janet Wilkinson my 7 x g.grandmother was baptised in Holme Cultram in 1673/4

Elizabeth Woodward (nee Hayes) my 3 x g.grandmother died in Frodsham, Cheshire in 1825.  On her gravestone, the inscription reads, “Here lieth the body of Betty, Wife of John Woodward of Five Crosses who died Jan 31 1825 aged 41 years”.  That makes her date of birth approx 1784, but the only Elizabeth Hayes I’ve found was baptised in 1786.

Ann Cockett was buried at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1845.  She was buried in her mother’s grave, her mother dying at Ann’s birth.  However, her name is carved right near the bottom of the stone and is very worn, so it doesn’t show up on the photograph we took of the stone.

Elizabeth Postlethwaite (nee Postlethwaite – yes her maiden name was the same as her married name but I haven’t managed to connect the families yet) my 4 x g.gran was buried at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1837.

Oswald Stanton my 1st cousin 5 times removed died in Donington in Holland, Lincolnshire in 1822 aged 6 months.

Modified -

Oops missed one :o

Robert Tubbs my 6 x g.g.uncle married Alice Salmon in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1718/19

On 1 January 1723 my 6 x great grandmother, Susannah Bettle (nee Goss), died in Cardington, Bedfordshire.

On 1 January 1854, my great grandfather William Conquest was baptised, aged 13, at St Mary's Church, Bedford.  Four of his younger siblings, Harriet, Henry, James and John, were baptised at the same time.  The youngest, John, was aged 4 and died in 1855 so I am guessing that he was a sickly child and that this was the reason for the five baptisms.

In 1824 a first cousin 3x removed, William Conquest, was born in Westminster, London, the first son of William and Ann (nee Brampton).  Sadly he only lived for ten days.

In 1853 my great great uncle William John Elliott was baptised at St Mary Islington.  He was the second son of George and Elizabeth (nee Mitchell).

In 1938 my grandmother Louise Maude Mary Marshall (nee Conquest) died in Leyton, Essex, aged 65.
Unfortunately I never knew her, but it was her maiden name which got me interested in family history.  I was expecting it to be easy, with what I thought of as an uncommon name - how wrong I was!

Hi Quest40

Can I suggest that perhaps you are looking for the wrong name. Serving in the Coastguard at this date would mean he would have a Naval Service Record. Having done a search for Edmund I could find no matches, however, I did find an Edwin Charles B Webb who seemed a likely candidate.

According to the 1881 Census an Edwin Charles Beton Webb was serving on HMS Monarch in Malta, and on the WW1 medal roll he was a Leading Boatman (meaning a CG), awarded the British War Medal. If my hunch is right you could risk the £3.36 to download his service record. This should provide details of the CG Stations he worked at, although unfortunately no family information, but may provides clues as to where to look for further information.

Hi Martin,

What very interesting information, thanks.  I shall look into it a bit more, but as Edmund/Edwin is not in my direct line I won't spend any money!  After posting yesterday I looked again for Susan in 1901 and found her, so it's certainly worth revisiting one's research.  That's where I find this thread very useful.

Thanks again, Ann

She was brought a book to write her family history in and she did this for each sibling and her parents and grandparents. She also knew her future husband from when he was a young boy as both families were great friends. So she was also able to complete her husbands side of the family's history as well. From her I have documents letters and hundreds of photos. So I want to say thanks gran and miss you loads.

In 1773 a 3 x g.g uncle, John Crowsley, was born in Kempston, Bedfordshire, son of Edward and his second wife Mary, nee Britain.

In 1860 my great grandparents Robert Marshall and Mary Ann Baker were married at St Mary's Church, Lewisham.  According to the marriage certificate Robert was a pork butcher, although in 1871 and 1881 he is listed as a warehouseman.  By 1891 he was a printer's porter, possibly because by then my grandfather Samuel was employed as a printer's reader at a newspaper.  I was also interested to see that Mary Ann was a milliner, because that is what her granddaughter, my mother, became.

Today - 27th January - is Holocaust Memorial Day.
It's 69 years today since the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Army.

Born today in 1922, my dad at Egham

He was son of a baker and his mother was a dressmaker. In the war he served in the RAF as a wireless operator. He worked as a buyer and in marketing for BAT for many years, taking early retirement in about 1980.
In retirement he was much involved in the local residents association, the social events thrived under his running, and his real passion was gardening, running his garden and three allotments.
His produce was shared as was his knowledge and enthusiasm

Always strong - until the end

Dad died on 18th December 2013 aged 91

RIP

Uncle George was born on this date in 1910...He was shot in both feet in Dunkirk in WW2. He was a Station Master at King's Cross. A Roman Catholic, he dedicated his life to the church and worked with the disabled and disadvantaged children until he was in his early 90s for which he was presented with Maunday Money from the Queen. He died in April last year aged 103 years. He lead a pauper's existence yet left £72,000 to 3rd world charities. God Bless!

Fondly remembered.

On 28 January 1892 Branson Bangle, my husband's 2 x great grandfather, died at Harston, Cambridgeshire, aged 75.  He was a tailor and married twice, first to Susan Patman, mother of Emma, my husband's great grandmother.  When she died aged only 34, he married Mary Brazier.

One I find it hard to put on

Dad was born 27th Jan 1922 in Egham, third child of a baker.

He was in the RAF in the war as a wireless operator, but was invalided out after a couple of years after an infection.
HE worked his whole career for BAT as a buyer then in marketing.
However his passion was in gardening. He won many prizes at horticultural shows.
On retiring, he took on three allotments. His knowledge as well as his produce was shared freely.
He had a gift of enthusing others.

He also worked for the residents association at this time and social events were a great success.

As old age progress, the allotments were given up and eventually had a gardener to help him. The last gardener said it was a privilege to work for someone who loved his garden so much.

As a family man he was a strong leader. His strength showed in his last year, he remained mentally strong through cancer and the infections and remained realistic about his chances.

Dad died on 18th December 2013.
Mum is still around so I have left out his name.
They were married for over 65 years.

RIP Dad

January 30th 1902 my great grandfather Alfred James died.  Born in Keynsham,  Somerset about 1829 he married Elizabeth Heale in 1851 and they arrived in Victoria, Australia on the Joshua in January 1852.  They went straight to the goldfields around Ballarat and stayed in the area until the late 1880's when they moved to Fitzroy, Victoria, where he died.  He fathered eleven children, seven of whom lived to adulthood.

Your father had a wonderful life and you have wonderful memories  :)
Reading your post caused me to pause and reflect on my own father who died around the same time as your Dad but in 2002. My Mum still misses him dreadfully, as do I.
Kind Regards,
Looby :)

Hi

Yes there is one for every month of the year, it doesn't matter about the year as it is the months we were interested in.

Here is the August one  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=655749.81

On Sunday 29th January 1769, Marion Tweedie, the first child and eldest daughter of my 4xG grandparents Robert Tweedie and Margaret Somerville was born in Carnwarth, Lanarkshire. Neither myself nor my good friend and fellow RootsChatter, Meg, who shares this line and to whom I am indebted for much of my Tweedie information, can find out much about her mother. Marion married a farmer, John Trevit, predeceased him and lies with him and two of their children in Carnwarth.

Do you know if Margaret Somerville is a decedent of the Somervilles - who were one of the most noblest families in Scotland way back in the 14th/15th Century?

Hi
You may be interested in this photo. It is of the family of David Pate, Master Bootmaker in Stirling and his wife Marion Crocket and family. They were married in Linlithgow in 1846 and both died in 1882. He is the son of John Pate and isabella Scott.
