Title: "Unread" Postings
Post by: alanmack on Friday 04 January 13 14:56 GMT (UK)
Hi,
    I don't know quite where to put this etc. . . . :-\

The Unread postings do not seem to be working as anticipated (as before the update). Presently it is showing me five pages back to 18.30 yesterday even though I have been on twice this, morning and perused some of the lists.

a. Is there a change in approach or policy?
or
b. is this an issue that is in hand?

Hope this does not come as a surprise to anyone. ;)

Alan

As a newcomer still trying to find his feet, I wouldn't like to read an 'unread' post, and next day when i may find I can contribute some help only to find the post is no longer there, and as a newcomer, not knowing quite yet where to track it down to supply my 'pearl of wisdom!   Cheers,   Tony. ::)

Hi Alan,

No surprise :)

Usually it will show just those new entries since your last logout. But even on the old forum I often had more entries in the "Unread replies" list than that..

Till now I've not managed to work out how and when this count is changed.
Sometimes it works exactly, sometimes it "adds a few more, for luck !"

regards,
Bob

Seems to depend on if you have actively  logged out .

Can also get confused if you visit the site on different devices.
(PC, laptop, tablet, phone) ...

Post by: alanmack on Friday 04 January 13 15:51 GMT (UK)
Thank you for your replies. I have now tried logging out completely and on logging back in it made not the slightest difference - 5 pages (250 or so unread) and the earliest was 16.32 yesterday = one of yours Bob.

The behaviour is unfathomable considering that on the old system I was cut off suddenly one day and when Firefox reconnected itself there were only four replies "unread since my last visit".

If Bob doesn't understand it then what hope for the rest of us who are not IT pro's. I still think something is wrong.

I have had this problem since the changeover too-this morning it was up to 37 pages and  this afternoon it has reverted to 2 (which is correct from my last log in) :)

This is a very strange problem.

It's also a bit like checking if the fridge light stays on after you close the door.

So, I've sneaked back in to see how many postings it's showing me. When I clicked on 'Unread' it shows me a page or so of postings from just after midnight (which is when I left) to now some five hours later.

So that looks about right.

What are the times and dates you are getting on the "Unread", do they tally at all with the time you were last logged in (as in signed in properly, and not viewing as a 'Guest')?

I stay signed in, and am online for many hours a day.
At present I have 22 pages of UNREAD POSTINGS, going back to 11.07 on 29th December.

I logout every day, and having just looked at the unreads in my queue, it seems that any posts after I logged out appear when I check the unread list. Being in Sydney, I had to cross reference the time difference between Oz & UK

I only have 9 pages at the moment, dating back to 3 January.  This is my 3rd time visiting RC today.

I have been up to 21 pages since the changes were made, but hopefully that's a thing of the past.

Some more data:

I always logout when leaving Rootschat and I have set my browser to delete the cache, history and all cookies when I close it.

So I am starting "tabula rasa" each time.
On logging in to RootsChat I usually have unreplied posts from about 1-4 hours before my last logout.

But sometimes, if I close the browser by mistake (or I lose the connection) and have to restart, I will only have the last few posts since the enforced close down in the "unread" list..

Morning Trystan,
Mine are down to 3 pages this morning when I logged on at 08.59 GMT. They time back to 19.20 yesterday. I too stay logged on but it seemed yesterday to make no difference after I logged out completely yesterday.

I apologise for bringing this up but clearly others are worse affected than me. There doesnt seem to be rhyme nor reason in the way it woeks so its a bit mystifying. :-\

It we be good if we could collect some more facts about this.

Suggestion:
Please note down the time when you log out (or close your browser, if you don't log out)
The next time you log in, note the time of the oldest item in the "Recent Unread Topics" list.
Post the times here.

Maybe we can then recognise a pattern.
It might be that we can't "correct" it, but it would be a step forward,
if we could at least say more exactly what we can expect to see in the list.

I'm sorry for being a bit dense here, but I don't understand.  ::)

I can beat the lot of you - I have 3 pages of 'unread' going back to yesterday.....but if I click 'All unread replies' at the bottom right hand side I have 7109 pages  :D

I've never looked at the 'Unread' before - why would I? I logon every day and either look for my 'Replies' or go to the small number of special boards I'm interested in. I already know which boards I haven't looked at  ;D

I expect I'm completely missing the point here - but I don't need all those 'Unread' pages - they must surely be clogging up the system???

Sorry for posting what is probably a stupid query, but I've got my teeth into this now!

Title: Re: "Unread" Postings
Post by: Old Bristolian on Saturday 05 January 13 11:01 GMT (UK)
Unlike Pat I use Unread as my main entry into topics (I don't like to miss anything). I never logout and in the past, when I opened Rootschat only the unread topics since last closing the site were listed. On occasion when a fault with the PC occured I did lose pages of unreads, but the system itself did what it said on the tin - now its very random. Like others, I might check the site several times a day and still have "unreads" that I'd read twice already! I also find that say, 5 pages of unreads are listed, and on entering no5, I find no4 is repeated - just a small annoyance, but time wasting.
Apart from these tiny matters, I'm really enjoying the new format now I'm used to it (I'm even getting used to Windows 8, so must be mellowing in my old age!)

I'm sure that there are many like Roopat who just look at particular boards of interest but I'm sure there must be others like me who love to brouse through all the unreads. That way I can pick up on items where my many strange interests and experiences allow me to offer some thoughts and assistance. It's also a great learning experience. I too have been perplexed by the number of unreads appearing, even when I have made two or three visits in a day although I have not bothered to mention it until prompted by this thread. I just assumed the problem was me.

I am now up to 30 pages going back to 24th December. I have never logged out although I've been thrown out once or twice in the miiddle of reading a post (Rootschat is too busy) and then struggled to find that post when I got back in. I always read the unread because I like the serendipity event of not looking at particular boards and I can often learn something from other people's questions. claytonbradley

I daren't start browsing through ALL the topics - my daughter has already told me I spend too much time on the computer! (And they say it's the youngsters.......  ;))

12:30  14:45  today 09:49

Trying to talk in UK time here ....I did log out last night to see what happened. Logged out at approximately 9.15 Australian Central Time. Think that's about 10.45 am UK time. Logged on here this morning at about 7.30 a.m ACT  - about 9.00 p.m. UK time.....I think.  :-\

Instead of the 22 pages of Unread Topics I now have 23 pages. Haven't counted them all but there are 75 on the first page!   :o

Unread Posts is fine....just a few on 1 page.....the ones I haven't got back to today.

just to add a bit, most I have is 5 pages, there sems to be a connection with whether you actually go to any of the unreads, also if a topic goes to more than one page you have to go to the last page, having said that I still cant see any logical pattern.

Just to check - am I looking at the right thing? 'Unread' next to 'Replies' top left hand side? The 'replies' bit seems ok.

I've been logging out between visits more regularly than I used to, I go to reply to posts first then scan through the unread posts. Depending on length of absence there can be many many pages, if I log out and in again quickly for any reason, I may lose all or most of the unread but often I'm surprised there's a couple of pages and it's probably how quickly the posts are coming in but as Bob mentioned, it's not really unusual to have more than what have just arrived since I was in earlier in the day for example. During the quieter times it does seem to clear the unread quicker, or if I'm in and out frequently over a shorter period they clear. Not very specific with times and dates, just observation  :)

BUT ... SHOULD TOT THREADS STILL BE NOT VIEWABLE TO GUESTS !  Think there could be a glitch there, noticed this morning that lighter side and totally off topic were both showing as sub boards under Common room while I was still a guest and I  could read the TOT

Logged back in 20:00, 3 pages (216 topics), earliest post today at 09:28am.

So I think a Unread Topics is reset, if you are logged off between 7:00pm and 8:00pm GMT, they seem to be reset to a point approx 11 hours behind present time. If you are not logged off in that period, the reset is missed and you just accumulate topics.

Now this is odd as earlier this afternoon I had 3 pages and the oldest post was earlier today (not sure of times). I now find that I have 8 pages and the earliest post is 01.51 yesterday. It fits somewhat with Tom's theory as I was on between 7 and 8 this evening.

It all seems very weird  ::)

Hi brevitas,

It is good to get confirmation from others that you were logged in during 7:00pm to 8:00pm and your posts are increasing.

Not sure now, Tom  :-\  I've just logged off and closed my browser and I've now come back on and it's down to 4 pages and oldest post is 08.58 today so I think it might well be cache/cookies or something like that.

I never log out unless forced to do so by some "misadventure" with the computer.  My "unread postings" seem to have adjusted themselves anyway and I'm definitely back to a normal number (about 4 pages coming together overnight).

Just logged on again after a couple of hours or so and closed browser. Now down to 3 pages and oldest post is 18.55 yesterday. I'm now thinking that it must be something to do with clearing the cache when exiting browser rather than just an internal RC/prog  problem  :-\

I would have to agree. I closed down at 12:50 AEDST, yesterday, 8 Jan, now 15:47 AEDST, 9 Jan. I have five (5) full pages and 7 on the sixth, with the last post on page 6 at about 02:00 GMT

Perhaps some Rootschatters have made the same mistake as me: on the home page of the Forum, top left, there are printed 'Unread Replies'; if you hover your mouse over them individually the url displayed will show two different addresses: unread posts and unread replies. Unfortunately, if you don't respond to these you may, like me, be tempted to click on the right-hand 'Unread' invitation, lower down, in the first page of the same forum home-page, which is in the Beginners' section, and will give you only the unread Beginners' posts. Having realised this and changed my method I now find I have the normal 24hrs accumulation of about 7 pages of unread posts to enjoy instead of the single page I've been inflicting on myself for days. Hope that this is the same problem that is worrying some others on this thread.

To Trystan and the "Crew",
Clearly this has been tweaked a bit and it seems to be working more or less as before the update. Tonight I have only 2 pages (about 120 replies unread).

Thank you one and all.

Alan,

Thanks for the thanks - but I'm not sure if I (or we) can take any credit on this yet! :) But again, any thank you for anything is very much gratefully received!

I'm glad it wasn't just me then - by the way I notice topics I have contributed to or started are no longer flagged in pale yellow as before - is this a change in policy or just another little bug?

Do we know the answer to this yet?
I found it much better when they were marked. Now I see titles that are familiar as I scroll through 'unread' but can't remember if I just looked at them previously or actually posted anything, so end up looking again or keeping on flitting to 'replies' unnecessarily ( well, was unnecessary on old system!)

It's on my list of things to put on here - "participation icons" - things that show we've either started a topic or been a part of them.

There's oodles of other things in the way first though - but I'm getting through them bit by bit. :)

Trystan - if you're around, we seem to have lost the cookie message again - I know we didn't have initially in the new format, then it re-appeared, but the last few days it has gone again. As I have my settings to clear cookies I should see it if it was there.

I am also struggling with unread posts. Don't think I will ever have enough time to get through them all. I find I am now cherry picking with posts I Think might be of interest. However I am concerned at what I might be missing. Also posts which I believe I have read are still showing. Or perhaps it is a case of Deja Vu

The brackets around (unread posts) and (new replies) is a good tweak :-)

Just curious about one reply notification, not sure it happened this way previously  :-\ ... Moderator linked a topic of same name by same poster on another board to the the earlier one I had responded to but not vice versa, so I got a reply but no addition to the thread at all. I did fathom out what happened as I'd already seen the other thread, though it would have been a total mystery re empty reply if I hadn't ...

It's not just brackets, after the update it just showed unread   replies, so to begin with it looked as if it was one subject unread replies.  Most people got used to it meaning two subjects, but now Trystan has made it even clearer. :)

.... and back with a further bit of clarification on curiosity  :D

Not such a bad thing if you're participating in a subject and get notification to further help elsewhere on same ... but would be helpful if the notification took you to to the reply, as it was, it took me to the earlier thread without the link. The notification was to say reply had been made to subject by the next person on the later thread but it didn't take me there.
Luckily Unread Posts had already helped me notice the new thread previously anyway  :D

Personally, I think those items should be buttons, like the Logout and Search ones, but probably in a different colour -- maybe blue?
