Title: WELLER Family
Post by: Wade82 on Friday 04 January 13 17:41 GMT (UK)
Hello this Weller family are originally from Kent England but some emigrated to Australia. I am looking at the moment for any marriages for these 3 children I have in my tree:
William Weller b 1905 Cranbourne, Victoria d 1968 Werribee
Clifford Weller b 1907 d 1958
Winifred Elsie Weller b 1903 d 1944 I think she may have married an Abbs as the death record is for Winifred Elsie Abbs?

Any help appreciated.
Thank you

Unfortunately I can't see a marriage for either of the men. There are two William Wellers marrying but neither to an Eva. One has a second name of George, the other a second name of George Henry. There is a limit on the the coverage of the index.

Wade, it must have been the next William. They obviously named a child by the same name after one died.  So William (James) died and they named the next boy just William. :-\

And this after Ann's last baby…..  :'(

Ann WELLER aged 34 born HAMP (Hampshire) died 1875.

Wade,
Muss mentioned in an earlier post that information could be found about Clifford WELLER on the WW2 Nominal Roll.
Information can be found about others in this family there too.
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/

She also had mention of the Australian National Archives website.
http://www.naa.gov.au/
You search as a guest.

The newspaper notices have all come from our wonderful free National Library site Trove Newspapers.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper
The advanced search allows you to filter the results as you search. You can also filter them from the left hand side of each page of results.

Judith  (JudB) posted about the will of William WELLER on PROV.
http://prov.vic.gov.au/
If you click on the Wills and Probate records link, and do a search, you can eventually get to links for downloading the image of the will for free.

Hope that's of some help.

Hi Wade,

Think the problem mentioned in the last post is going to take a bit of sorting. I've had a quick look and gathered what information I can, and will go through it a bit later today. Unfortunately Trove Newspapers is down at present, as I'd hoped a death notice might be available that would help.

Emma, here's what I've found with my initial foraging in the indexes......

For starters, here are the two births for Mary Flynn and Margaret Flynn …..

Mary FLYNN born 1876 at MTPR (Mt Prospect)
Father = Michael FLYNN & Mother = Elizabeth OAKLEY
Ref = 24781

Margaret FLYNN born 1879 at ROCK
Father = Michael FLYNN & Mother = Eliza KELLY

Still trying to find what ROCK is the abbreviation, Emma!   :-\

There are other births registered in 1879 to Michael FLYNN & Eliza KELLY……but none to Michael FLYNN & Elizabeth OAKELEY/OAKLEY.....

Ellen FLYNN born 1879 at ROCK
Father: Michael FLYNN & Mother = Eliza KELLY
Ref = 25375

John FLYNN born 1881 at ROCK
Father: Michael FLYNN & Mother = Elizabeth KELLY
Ref = 19009

William FLYNN born 1883 at ROCK
Father: Michael FLYNN & Mother = Elizabeth KELLY
Ref = 4989

Elizabeth FLYNN born 1884 at ROCK
Father: Michael FLYNN & Mother = Elizabeth KELLY
Ref = 20053

ADDED.....

John FLYNN aged 9 months born ROCKYHEAD died in 1992
Father = Michael & Mother = Elizabeth UNKNOWN
Ref = 9907

So that tells us what the abbreviation ROCK stands for.   ::)

The only marriage I can find is the following…..
Michael FLYNN born KERRY married Elizabeth OAKELEY born TIPPERARY in 1870
Ref = 3962

Could OAKELY be a mistranscription of KELLY? It might be stretching it a bit, but not impossible I suppose......  :-\

Still working on deaths etc.

Title: Re: Weller
Post by: deeiluka on Sunday 06 January 13 00:38 GMT (UK)
As for deaths, there is this for starters……

Elizbth FLYNN aged 87 died in 1937 at RMOND (Richmond)
Father = RYAN & Mother = UNKNOWN
Ref = 2366

This is the death I wanted to try to find a Death Notice for in the papers.    :-\

Her death certificate could shed some light on the situation, as it should list her children, and other information such as her husband’s name. However that depends on the amount of knowledge known by the informant. Victorian certificates are much more informative than English ones, and digital images can be purchased online for half the price of a paper copy. ($20 AUD)

If you are interested, I can give you the website.

ROCK could be Rock Hill or Rock Creek or Rockbank.

Title: Re: Weller
Post by: deeiluka on Sunday 06 January 13 02:06 GMT (UK)
It looks like the ROCK was Rockyhead, Ronda....if there was such a place......

Looking back at what we have….

Michael FLYNN married Elizabeth OAKELEY in 1870
Ref = 3962

Mary FLYNN born 1876 at MTPR
Father = Michael FLYNN & Mother = Elizabeth OAKLEY
Ref = 24781

Mary Winifred WELLER aged 62 died in 1939 at MELB
Father = Michl FLYNN & Mother = Eliz OAKLEY
Ref = 1431
Approx year of birth = 1876

And I’ve found another death with parents Michl FLYNN & Eliz  OAKLEY…..

Annie Theresa ANDREW aged 77 died at S MELB in 1950
Father = Michael FLYNN &  Eliz  OAKLEY
Ref = 7742
Approx year of birth = 1873 but I can't find it....

So I think that's conclusive in regards to the Oakley in regards to Mary.....Margaret still needs sorting…..

Title: Re: Weller
Post by: cando on Sunday 06 January 13 03:05 GMT (UK)
I think the place of birth is Rocky Lead not Rockyhead. Search for Blampied on googlemaps and you will see that Mt Prospect is in the same area.  Rocky Lead is included for census info with Blampied.  Between Creswick and Daylesford.  My grandfather lived at Blampied in his youth.

Transcriptions from the registers to the databases have many spelling errors especially of the lesser known locations.

Wade you may like to search for the WELLERS listed in this index

Yet another spelling, Cando and Emma....I've found Annie Theresa Flynn's marriage.....

Annie Theresa FLYNN born ROOKYLEAD married Jas ANDREW in 1900.
Ref = 7309

Dee   :)

Title: Re: Weller
Post by: deeiluka on Sunday 06 January 13 04:09 GMT (UK)
I've put together what we have for Margaret WELLER....it just continues the puzzle....

Margaret FLYNN born 1879 at ROCK
Father = Michael FLYNN & Mother = Eliza KELLY
Ref = 25379

Margt Mary FLYNN born VIC married Ernt Arth WELLER in 1903
Ref = 7243R

Margaret WELLER aged 77 died in 1958 at CAUL.
Father = Michael FLYNN & Elizabeth RYAN
Ref = 12209
So approx year of birth = 1881, near enough to 1879.

We know that death information is only as good as that of the informant, so is the last a mistake? Only way of knowing may be her marriage certificate.   :-\
(Victorian Marriage Certificates usually have the name of the mothers on them as well as the fathers.)

Post by: cando on Sunday 06 January 13 04:17 GMT (UK)
Rockylead could easily be transcribed as Rookylead.  The only name in the area today is Rocky Lead Creek in the Hepburn Shire area.  These places were in gold mining areas.  They were not all gazetted townships.

Many groups from differing countries contributed to the early rise of Daylesford and Hepburn. The Irish at Eganstown were prominent in many fields, and also the French vintners at Glenlyon, the Germans at Rocky Lead the Italians at Old Racecourse,

Confusion still reigns to some extent......but I think I know where the RYAN came from on Margaret WELLER's death certificate. It appears to be her grandmother's maiden name.

I found a message on a well known message board that states that Michael Flynn married Elizabeth Oakeley (Kelly) at Bullarook Victoria on 1st October 1870 and it has some details of his marriage certificate.

Michael FLYNN was aged 32.
Parents  = Michael FLYNN(farmer) & Johanna KEAN
Birthplace = Casltegregory, Kerry Ire
Elizabeth OAKELY (KELLY)
Parents = Patrick OAKELY or O’KELLY & Mary RYAN
Born Templederry, Tipperary

What we still don't know is if the writer added the KELLY/O'KELLY information or if it was a mistranscription or there was a correction on the certificate.

The writer lives in Victoria and she had responses from another Victorian.

Have you come across this in your searches, Emma?

Hello this Weller family are originally from Kent England but some emigrated to Australia. I am looking at the moment for any marriages for these 3 children I have in my tree:
William Weller b 1905 Cranbourne, Victoria d 1968 Werribee
Clifford Weller b 1907 d 1958
Winifred Elsie Weller b 1903 d 1944 I think she may have married an Abbs as the death record is for Winifred Elsie Abbs?

Hi Emma, you just caught me before I shut down.

The website for Uncertified images of Victorian certificates is...
http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/family+history+certificates/

And yes, unmarked graves are those without any marking to show you where they are - you need to have information from the cemetery or council to find the spot where the person is buried....if it is available.

I'll PM you the website for the message board....part of the message had a phone number in it so I don't want to put it on here.

And yes, I've seen the trees, but again, they needed checking out......some of which we've done on here.  It would be good to check out that marriage certificate though.

There are lots of missing BMD from those years, Emma....especially in the parts of Victoria that the Flynns were in.

PM coming shortly....

Greater Melbourne Cemetery Trust is reponsible for the management of the Werribee cemetery.  If you want further details you need to contact the Werribee Cemetery Office - link on this page
http://www.gmct.com.au/deceased-search.aspx

You have not commented so I am assuming you have missed the posting of this excellent resource early records for your WELLER family from the Geelong.  Mentioned in two local history books; parish records for baptisms and Wm d. 1910 has a headstone at Drysdale Cemetery. Further information is available from the website.

Which website were you using, Emma? The National Archives of Australia?

If so, his papers are not "open" at this stage. That means you have to apply to have them examined and be declared "Open" before you can order a copy.

I've never done it, so have no idea how to go about that. Perhaps someone will read this who has been through the procedure, and can give advice.

Hi,
my husband is the grandson of Elsie Weller/Abbs.  She was the only one of the family who married, May, Cliff and Bill(William) were never married.  Elsie had a daughter Patricia Elsie May Abbs who was raised by the three in Werribee after Elsie died.
