Afternoon all
I have found a marriage between George Gealen (Gealer on familysearch) Goater and Sarah Fox at St Alkmund's Church, Duffield 30/04/1810 on the Boyds Marriage Index, IGI and FreeReg.
The FreeReg entry states that George was from Duffield parish and Sarah was of St Nicholas's parish, Nottingham.
I am wondering if anyone has access to the Duffield records to confirm witnesses/ parents/ occupations etc,.
I am trying to see if this George Goater is the father of Alfred Goater born c.1819 in Ashby De La Zouch.
best wishes
Maria :)

Hello again Maria
The marriage was by licence, so a copy of the licence may hold some clues.

Thanks Fast Fusion - really interesting.
Thanks Carol - how would I get a copy of the licence?

Hi Maria
Derbyshire marriage licences are kept at Lichfield Records Office. If you go on their website there is a form you can print off, but they are expensive. If you are not really sure they are your ancestors then you might be better to try to find George's baptism first. Have you posted on the Leicestershire board to see if anyone has access to Ashby records?

Hi,
Alfred Goater = Amelia Thurman June Q1841 Nottingham 15 877 (civil registration),
have you purchased this registration document which should give the name of the
respective parents?
If you have purchased this - what name is given for parents?
Spendlove

Thanks Sunflower - yes I have asked on the Leicestershire board but no Ashby De La Zouch records online yet.
Spendlove - marriage cert gives father of Amelia as John Thurman and Alfred's as George Goater, occupation looks like "gentleman".
Best wishes

Hi,
Have just found the following by doing a search of the Newspaper Derby Mercury:-
Published Thursday 15th November 1815
A Sermon will be preached at the Brook Side Chapel, Derby
on Sunday next November 19 by the REV. MR. GOATER of
ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH for the benefit of Sunday Schools.
I think I am correct in saying Brookside was a Congregational Chapel.
If you were not previously aware of Rev. Goater, think this may give a clue
for further research.

Hi Maria
I am going to the Leicester Records Office one day next week so I will see if I can find anymore on the Goater family.
Carol
-
Thanks Carol that would be fantastic.
My Goater line seems to be predominantly from the Sparsholt, Hampshire and surrounding areas so it would be brilliant to find out how the Goaters came to be in Derbyshire/ Leicestershire and see if I can tie them back to my motley crew.
Thanks so much for taking the trouble to help me, I appreciate it very much.
best wishes

Hi Maria
Sorry no luck with the Goater at the Leics RO. I checked Ashby St Helens baptisms, also a marriage licence index, plus the will index.

Good afternoon everyone.
I am sorry that I am arriving at this six years late! I have just started work on the Goater family on behalf of my wife's cousin. Alfred (b 1819 ish) in Ashby dlz is her great x 2 grandfather.
I have:
George Gealer Goater married Sarah Fox 30/4/1810 [records in Nottingham and Duffied]
Rev George Goater 1815 congregational minister Ashby dlz [newspaper]
William Hextall Goater born 1816 in Ashby dlz to George and Sarah, (Congregation registers via Ancestry).
Alfred Goater born 1819 in Ashby dlz [many census returns].
Alfred Goater married Amelia Thurman 1841 (Nottingham) [several records, father's name George]
For me the balance of probability is that these are all inter-related.
Has anyone managed to get any further back.
George Goater could well have come from Hampshire originally. I think that I am right in saying that Congregational ministers moved around every few years. Is there any history of the Ashby dlz Congregational chiurch?
Sorry if this has all ground to a halt but I thought that it was worth asking.
