I am interested in the ancestry of Pridmore CHAMBERS - born Caldecott (Uppingham 7a 251 OND) 1859 - the tenth child of William and Ann CHAMBERS, according to the 1861 census. Later he uses the name Henry - and married Ann Elizabeth WARD in 1891
William CHAMBERS was born in Gretton, Northamptonshire about 1816. His wife (don't know the surname) came from Caldecott. I have two antecedent Pridmore CHAMBERS in my files: one born Middleton cum Cottingham 1780, the other (his son) born Cottingham 1803. I would like to determine whether William CHAMBERS relates to either of these Pridmores. The PRIDMORE surname is intimately entangled with several other surnames in my family tree.
Pridmore CHAMBERS senior inherited his given name from his maternal grandmother - Alice PRIDMORE married Thomas ALDWINKLE at Rockingham in 1734
Many thanks - Alan
(Should I repeat this request on the Northamptonshire forum too?)

Hi Alan
I found the reference below in Family Search which might be 'Ann Chambers' in the 1861 census. The name, place and date would all fit. Also if you look at the 1841 census for William you'll find his wife listed as Sarah which I would imagine is further proof.
Sarah Anne Wignell
groom's name: William Chambers
bride's name: Sarah Anne Wignell
marriage date: 26 Sep 1836
marriage place: Caldecott,Rutland,England
indexing project (batch) number: M06169-1
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 435983
Are you aware of the Gretton Local History Society? They have transcribed local parish records back to the 16th century. Here is their website link http://www.kellner.eclipse.co.uk/gretton/history/.

Here is what looks like his baptism record, again courtesy of Family Search
parents: Stephen Chambers, Sarah Chambers
name: William Chambers
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 12 Jun 1815
baptism/christening place: Gretton, Northampton, England
father's name: Stephen Chambers
mother's name: Sarah Chambers
indexing project (batch) number: I00710-2
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 6127586
There is a marriage of Stephen Chambers to Sarah L (sic) in Uppingham in 1805, but I guess that it is too vague to rely upon

Hi Tony
Many thanks.
I followed your reasoning and, tracking through Caldecott (Rutland), Great Easton (Leicestershire), Cottingham and Gretton (Northamptonshire) I was also able to open up the links from my main families of interest to the Wignell family
Regards Alan

Coincidentally I have a great uncle who was born in Middleton Lodge and his brother, my maternal grandfather, was born in Cottingham just up the road. We're talking late 1800s though.
Incidentally I assume that you have visited this wonderful site http://www.cottinghamhistory.co.uk/

What surnames? I have been doing a "village genealogy" of Cottingham cum Middleton over the last two years. Yours might figure!!
-
My great grandfather, William Cross was in Cottingham by 1868 when one of my grandfather's brothers was born there. William was originally from Harbury, Warks. My grandfather Henry Cecil Cross was born there in 1878. There were others in the family.

Hi Alan and Tony.
Sorry to butt in here, but I went over to Cottingham and Gretton in the week
(we had lunch at the village hall with all the Gretton villagers).
Anyway Alan I noticed although I still can not get to do Cottingham graves as
the ground is so dangerous under foot I did see that grave A02-025 was to
a Pridmore Chambers (half the face was worn away) who died in 1878 I think.

Hi Sandy
That fills in one of the gaps on my grave plot index!
Many thanks Alan

I remember it well Alan.
As it took me 3 days to find all the in-accuracies on it for you (using my photo's
which I was able to take and the Burials) I will not forget your index in a hurry. :)
I am attaching a photo of the grave in case you can read more of the
inscription than I can, although I can see wife Frances also named.

Well I will if it does not keep telling me my session timed out. >:(

Just thought you would like a confirmation of the marriage of William Chambers and "Ann".
According to my Rutland Ma CD William Chambers of Gretton ma Sarah Anne WIGNELL of Caldicott on 26/9/1836 at Caldicott by Banns.
I also found 2 bp's
Sarah Chambers da of Wm & Sarah Anne 17/12/1737 -earlier and may not be connected
Samuel Stephen so of Wm & Sarah Anne 22/9/1839 - William a Labourer ties in nicely with ma date.
I can't see a bp in Caldicott for a Pridmore or Henry Chambers and there are no Chambers burials.
Hope this helps.
