Title: Everett Millais to Australia
Post by: scobie79 on Tuesday 22 January 13 15:11 GMT (UK)
Hello all.

I don't know if anyone can help, but it seems Everett Millais (son of the painter) travelled to Australia (Victoria) after 1871 (he appears then in the English census). He married in 1886 (possibly in Australia, but I suspect not). He was definitely back in England for the birth of his first child in 1888.

Any information about his travel out and / or back would be appreciated, or even anything relevant to his time out there would be appreciated.

Many thanks .

Scobie

Did he die 7.9.1897 aged 41?

If yes - his will shows him as Sir Everett Millais and his widow as Dame Mary St Lawrence Millais

One gossipy mention of meeting young Everett in Victoria who was on "the grand tour" and on his way to NZ.   Mentions he is related to Clement Hodgkinson in Vic.

Clements first wife, Matilda Mary Chapman, is my 5x removed first cousin. At least three of her grandparents were convicts ;D

Cheers, Ann

From NZ Papers (quoting from an Australian paper)
an obit to Everett mentioning that he acted as a dog judge whilst in NZ.

Hello again everyone.

It would appear from what you have discovered that Everett Millais spent some ample time in the Southern Hemisphere building himself a considerable reputation and worthwhile life there. I assume that his return to London was prompted when his father was awarded a Baronetsy in 1885. He married Mary St. Lawrence Hope-Vere the following year, possibly in Scotland.

Lady Mary St. Lawrence Millais lived for many years in my home parish of Warehorne, Kent where she died in 1948. Her son lived there with her until his death in 1920.

Many thanks to all who have helped on this, your work is much appreciated and gives me useful family background information.

My best regards,
Scobie
