Title: john sessions
Post by: LyndonRees on Tuesday 22 January 13 17:23 GMT (UK)
Hi i'm looking for some further info on a John Sessions born 5 October 1743 in Appleton,Berkshire. His first wife was Mary Chils marriage 24 August 1769 in Appleton. They had children Ann (1770) and John (1771). His second marriage was to Mary Tidcomb on 23 November 1778. They had Mary (1779), Sarah (1781), Hannah (1782) and Thomas (1784). The thing is was John married a third time as the last of Johns' children was born in 1808, which would have made Mary 63 years old! The other children were: Robert (1786), John (1788), James (1792), Katherine (1794), William (1797), Samuel (1799), Stephen (1804) and another  in 1808, which i don't know the name of. Any info please, Thank You.

23 Jan 1734 - SESSION Frances - widow
8 Apr 1748 - SESSIONS Mrs
24 Aug 1748 - SESSIONS Ann d/o Ferbert

Thank you Harry for that info. What i should have explained was, i was wondering if John Sessions was married for a third time as the years of some of his childrens' births would have made his wife over 60 years of age. I found that Robert Sessions, born in 1786 was born in Newbury, Bershire an gives his parents name as John Sessions and just gives his mothers' first name, Mary. Robert married Sarah Belcher on 11 May 1812 at East Hendred. Roberts' mother still could be Mary Tidcomb but later siblings, such as Stephen Sessions, born 1804 East Hendred, i find very unlikely if Mary Tidcomb was the mother as she would then have been 59 years old! Thanks again Harry.

Have you traced the family at either of the Hendreds ?   If not, these parishes have been transcribed by OFHS onto CD and someone on here or the Oxfordshire board may have the OXF-WAN02 disc that contains these parishes and will be able to help.   Also there is a marriage index covering the ex Berkshire parishes that moved to Oxfordshire in 1974, which may be useful source of data.

Hi

I have the transcripts for the Hendreds-is Robert Sessions your ancestor ?

A John and Mary Sessions were baptising children  at East Hendred between 1779 and 1804 including a Robert 27 Jan 1786

This Robert married Sarah Belcher at E/Hendred in 1812

Robert was buried 04 Nov 1834 age 46( sic)

Mary Sessions was buried at E/Hendred 23 Dec 1837  age 76 -this would give her a birth about 1760ish so she would be about 44 in 1804 when Stephen was born

Where did the 1778 marriage take place ?

Kim

Hi thanks for the info, i have a marriage for John Sessions to a Mary Tidcomb at Bampton, Oxfordshire on 23 November 1778 and gives Mary Tidcomb's birth year as 1745, the same as Johns' first wife, Mary Chils. Do you have the maiden name of Robert Sessions' mother and the correct birth year of Mary Tidcomb if it's her? Thanks Kim.

Hi Kim. Do you have a baptism date for Thomas Sessions? I have 4 July 1784 parents: John Sessions/ Mary Titcombe in Lambourn, Berkshire not East Hendred, is that correct? Thanks. Lyndon.

Lyndon

Why do you think Sarah was batpised at Newbury ?

The John Sessions and Mary Titcombe who married at Bampton in 1778 baptised the following children at East Hendred

29 Jan 1779-Mary.......bur 23 Mar   inf
10 Jan 1781-Sarah
26 Jun 1782-Hannah
gap
27 Jan 1786-Robert
07 Jun 1788-John.......bur 20 June 1788    inf
18 Jan 1790-John
18 May 1792-James
21 Sep 1794-Katherine
30 Jul 1797-William......bur 27 May 1798
22 Sep 1799-Samuel William
19 Aug 1804-Stephen

Bur 04 April 1808-Stephen...not sure if it is the one above

The on-line Lambourne transcripts show a baptism 04 July 1784 for Thomas Sessions s John & Mary-as far as I can see it is the only baptism for this couple and so it is possibly "your" John & Mary, which would account for the gap at East Hendred, however unless the original P/R entry has more info no one will be able to say for certain ? !!

Hello Lyndon.

The Sarah Sessions born 10 January 1781 married William Clifford of Buckland in East Hendred in 1802. Their children were Charles (ch. 27 July 1803), William (b. 19 April 1804, christened 13 May), Stephen (chr. 29 June 1806), and Ann (b. and chr. 24 March, 1808), Marian (chr. 22 April 1810) and Eliza (chr. 19 April 1812). Ann Clifford (who married John Wiltshire in 1828) is my g g g g grandmother; her daughter Emma married John Francis Butler of Upton and they emigrated to Australia in 1858. The Sessions family was Catholic, and some family members are buried in the churchyard of St Mary's, East Hendred.

I can give you more information on our family if you like.
Geoffrey

Hi evriast,

Welcome to Rootschat and happy new year.
Just be aware you shouldn't post your email address as its against Rootschat policy and will probably be removed by the moderators. (It prevents it from being used by scammers etc.)

However, I have found the following baptism in the East Hendred transcripts issued by the Oxfordshire FHS;
5-11-1837 Charles Clifford s/o Rachel, singlewoman
19-4-1843 Mary Ann   "      d/o   "              "

I couldn't see a 3rd baptism nor can i see any burial or marriage.

I found her in the 1841 census, she was still at home with her father William and with her son     Charles and another son  James aged 1 year. This entry doesn't appear in East Hendred that I can see.

Its possible that if either married it may give a father's name, or it might not.

Hope this helps.

Alan

James Clifford was born 30 Oct 1838. Rachel came to Canada with the 3 children and her sister Marion, expecting her lover (possibly the son of Lord Marlborough of Blenheim Palace) to join them the following spring. Instead the stableman of Blenheim, James Haynes was sent in his place with a sum of money for Rachel and a proposal of marriage if she was interested. She accepted and had 3 children with Haynes. These children have his name and the first three kept the name Clifford. It would be great to know if there is any truth to the story.

The William Clifford, married to Sarah Sessions , born 1781 is my 3g grandfather. I am particularly interested in their son Charles , born 1803, transported to Austraia in 1825 and my 2 g grandfather's  ancestors, especially the Session family of East Hendred  on Sarah 's father's side and her mother's line of Tidcombs

Although this entry is old I have some info that may help others in the future;

It appears to me Rachel married James HAINES before going to the US, so above story very unlikely..

I have further information that answers most of my previous post. James Haines and Rachel Clifford were married twice in 1845 before coming to Canada: one was probably a Catholic ceremony, since the names on the same search are Mary Ann Eyston and Richard Thomas Gillow. The Catholic  Eystons owned the manor (ie owned everything in the village and surrounding area) where East Hendred is situated and probably insisted on this. Rachel may have been in their employ and lived within walking distance of their house. Rachel's children were born in Wantage Workhouse- this is where poor women went to have children out of wedlock. I ordered birth records for her children James and Mary Ann, and both were born there with the fathers name and rank/profession left blank. Informant: Henry Walker, Master of Wantage Union Workhouse. I assume the second marriage, about the same time, was in an Anglican church.

I wonder if DNA will someday solve if Cliffords and Eystons are related.

Appreciate this thread has been quiet for quite sometime but I am a descendant of Anne Clifford and John Wiltshire through their daughter Emma who married John Butler and came to Australia.

Would like to share information and get any information that could be shared with me.
