Hi

It might help us if you can be more specific. What do you want us to look for?

There does not seem to be a Benjamin Thompson in Uppingham in the 1841 census but on the other hand there are lots of them around the country. Why do you believe that he was there in 1841 and, if I've misunderstood, where have you found evidence of him and his description as a gent?

In short what do you want looked for and can you give us some clues please?

cheers

I have been helping Gill ( for years !) with her Thompson family.

Benjamin (father William is a woolsorter) is in Chelsea in 1841,not born in county,all later censuses show he was born in Uppingham.

HO107/688 Folio 44  Page 32

He married Clare Silk in 1835 but she died in 1840,then he married Eliza Middlemist in Oct 1841 in St Pancras.Then in May 1854 he marries Catharine Jane Ennis Cannon.

I think his parents are William and Mary both 65 in Uppingham in 1841.They have an Emily Thompson aged 12 with them,possible grandaughter?

I think Gill would like his baptism and any info to take this side further backwards.

Thanks Tony  ;)

For those trying to help;
1851 Census he is in Middlesex, no occp, Widowed with his Children and step children.
Born c 1805 Uppingham, Rutland

Most Tees dont seem to have the 1841, he is not a Gent just of Independant means;

1841 Census
Pa*ham Place,
Chelsea, Middlesex
HO107/688/3/Chelsea
Benjamin THOMPSON, 35, Ind, No
Benjamin Thompson, 4
Thomas Thompson, 3
Clair Thompson, 2
Ann SILK, 69, No
+ 2 Servants
Children born in County

Marriage;
27 January 1835, Richmond St Mary, Surrey
Clare SILK, Spinster, married Benjamin THOMPSON, Widower of St Martin in the Fields
Witnesses, Thomas Thompson, Ann Silk, Ann Silk, W Answorth?Familysearch.Org

Next Marriage;
Familysearch.Org
21 October 1841, Old Church, St Pancras, London
Benjamin THOMPSON
Eliza MIDDLEMIST
Anc has the image;
Benj a Widower, Gent**, Father WILLM Thompson, Wool Stapler
Eliza a Widow, Father ALEX Cannon, RN
Eliza Father Alex and her Sister Catherine Jane were Witnesses ( his next Wife to be in 1854!)
Eliza MIDDLEMIST or CANNON

So looks like 4 Wives for Benjamin.

Mrs Templeton;
I tried F/S and FreeREG for Benjamins Christening with no luck.
Hopefully someone can find it for you :)

So Emily c 1829 might be Benjamins Daug from the 1st Marriage Carol?

NUP she is the Daug of JOSEPH 1806, Son of William/Mary

1851 Joseph born c 1807 Uppingham is in Middlesex, Widowed, Occp Victualler
Emily born c 1830 Westminster is with him.

You prob already have this though.

Mrs Templeton

I can confirm from microfiche DE1784/8 that Benjamin son of William Thompson and Mary his wife was baptised at Uppingham on 29 April 1804.

And from microfiche DE1784/11 there is the marriage of William Onley Thompson to Mary Allin both OTP at Uppingham by banns on 30 January 1795.  Witnesses John West and Elizabeth Allin

Not 100% certain about the middle name Onley

If the middle name “Onley” is valid then the following records in St Nicholas, Leicestershire from Familysearch are compelling and worthy of further investigation (refer C03464-1, C01686-6, M01313-0):

John Tompson married Mary Oneley on 24 April 1756 at St Nicholas Leicestershire.
(Benjamin’s grandfather?)

Children all recorded at St Nicholas, Leicestershire.

Martha Tompson birth 11 December 1760, baptism 12 December 1760, burial 28 June 1762

Martha Tompson baptism 21 September 1762

John Tompson birth 6 January 1758, baptised 8 January 1758, burial 30 April 1764

Jenny Tompson baptism 29 September 1766

John Tompson baptism 16 January 1768

John Onely Thomson baptism 16 January 1770

William Onely Tomson baptism 19 January 1774 (Benjamin’s father?) second entry spelled Tompson

I note that William Thompson aged 65 (1841 Uppingham census) was not born in county.

Revisiting the microfiche of Uppingham PRs I see that Thompson was also recorded as Tompson.

For whatever reason banns for the marriage of William Only Thompson and Mary Allin were originally entered in the marriage register at Uppingham in November/December1794 with a margin note directing to the actual solemnisation entry of 30 January 1795 and recorded quite few entries later as Tompson.

There are more Only/Onely/Oneley records at St Nicholas.

In addition to Benjamin baptised 29 April 1804 and Joseph baptised 30 April 1806, another son Francis was baptised on 25 June 1800.  Parents William Thompson and Mary his wife.  All Uppingham ref DE1784/8.
