Title: 1861, 1871 census look ups for Samuel ELLIOTT and family please.
Post by: F.H. on Sunday 03 February 13 12:35 GMT (UK)
Hello all.
Just wondered if someone could please look up a SAMUEL ELLIOTT and his family please. I have had some info but I would like to find all of his children.
Samuel was born in Swansea about 1831. He married Mary ROGERS in 1852 at St Paul, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.
I have been told that they had 9 children, but I have only been able to find 7 so far, so I am hoping that the other two may be on the 1861 or 1871 census.
I understand they lived around Cwmamman in the 1860's
Many thanks,
F H

Hello,

you don't give the names of the ones you have  :-\

However, in 1871 they have these children:
Thomas 6 yrs; Edward 6 yrs; Mary A 4 yrs; Robert 2 yrs and John 1 yr.
They are all quite young if they were married in 1852.

Hope this helps

Hello, I am up to eight using the 1871 and 1881.
Thomas  born circa 1865, Edward circa 1865, Mary circa 1867, Robert c.1869, John c1870, Samuel c 1873, David c 1877, William circa 1879.
Looking at the spread of years the missing child could be either the firstborn or born between Samuel and David.
Haven't found the family on 1861 yet.
Regards
Judy

With regard to 1861, I can only see a Mary Elliot, 26 yrs born Llangennech living in Llanelly who is a widow.
There are no children with her.

Hello again,
I still can't find them on the 1861 but I have found an Ancestry tree which gives a daughter Jane born in 1853 then there is a huge gap to Edward and Thomas in 1865. I would think there were more children born who did not survive.  What was Samuel's occupation on his marriage certificate?  Perhaps he was elsewhere in 1861.

Hi Everyone

Have been looking for them for a while in 1861 and nothing yet - although I am beginning to wonder whether they are amongst the imcomplete schedules for Carmarthenshire Llandilofawr Llandebie - sorry not much help but would help to explain the disappearance.

Regards

Z :)

In 1881, Samuel is a Railway Engine Driver.

A tree I looked at has Jane in 1861 as granddaughter to John Elliot in Llanelly. Do you have Samuel's father's name?

Found that John Elliott in 1841 as Ellrott - has son Samuel and other children including Selina who appears in 1861 with John her father and Jane born 1852, so it looks to be the right family.

Hi Heywood. Sounds good to me, but you've lost me a bit (it doesn't take much) ha ha. Can you explain a little.
Thanks,

One tree that was mentioned has Jane living with grandfather John (he also a daughter Selina with him).
1841 has John as Ellrott (rather than Elliott)  with children. Amongst the children are Samuel and Selina which ties the family together. So it looks as though Jane may be Samuel's daughter.

I am inclined to think that Mary is the 'widow' in 1861.

She is living Machynys, Llanelly. She is 26 yrs and born Llangennech.

In 1851 Mary Rogers is 15 yrs, living Machynys Row and is born Llangennech.

Hi.
Yes, I suppose I am.... My great uncle Fred married Elsie James who was Mary Ann Elliott's daughter... Mary Ann Elliott was Samuels daughter.
Mary Ann Elliott was married to David James.
My great uncle Fred and Elsie went to the USA around 1920 and married out there and had three daughters.

Thanks for your reply and the information.
I had found a possible marriage of Mary Ann Elliott in 1907 but could not identify her husband. But I cannot find them on the 1911 census. Do you have the date of birth of their daughter. I would be very grateful for any more information.
If you need anymore information about Samuel Elliott and his family I happy to provide anything.

Hi E.
Mary Ann Elliott married David James December quarter 1907 at Llandilofawr, you could get the marriage certificate to verify this.
I have the place of birth for Elsie James down as Bargoed, South Wales.
It is some time ago that I was trying to sort this part of my tree, I seem to remember there was a discrepancy regarding Elsie's birth date and parentage.

Elsie (also known as Elsbeth) arrived in the USA on 1st April 1920 on the ship Saxonia. It states her age as 23 yrs.
It also goes on to say, her nearest relative or friend from where she came from, was a Robert Elliott of 3 Long Road, Tredegar.

On her US naturalization record it states her birth as 9th June 1895.
Her naturalization was dismissed in November 28th 1941. Reason, deceased.

There is also mention of my great uncle Frederick Hines and Elsie going to stay with her "uncle" David Elliott in Tailorville, Illinois, USA.

Hope this has helped you,
If I can help more, just ask.
Fred.

Thanks for that.
Robert Elliott was my great grandfather known as Grancha.
Her uncle David was known to us as Uncle Dai. He paid to have his family tree done in the late 1950s and early 1960s then had it destroyed. My initial interest in genealogy was to find what caused him to destroy it. I haven't found it. So mystery is not solved.

Do you know why he had it destroyed?...
Could it have been Elsie's birth date?...
Was uncle David still living in the USA in the 1950s and 60s.
Are you in the USA too?
Oh, So many questions...
I hope you find your answers. If its not too painful, I hope you can share them.
Let me know if I can help.

Fred

I live in Wales.
Could well be that Elsie was the issue. I don't know. All I knew before was that she was a niece Mary, widow of Samuel, in the 1901 census. They were living in New Tredegar, about 5 miles from where I live.
Uncle Dai died in Illinois in 1970. He only came back to Wales on holidays. He usually stayed with Robert.
I have now found that David James had been married previously married. Head one daughter called Annie Maud who married Henry Finch. They went to America in 1921. I remember her letters to my grandmother. My mother always referred to her as Auntie Maud.

I will go to visit my mother's cousins. One lived with Robert until he died and continued to live in the house afterwards. I'll see if I can find anything more about Elsie.

Hello again.
I've just found an Annie M James who married a Henry F Finch at Merthyr Tydfil in 1920... Is this one of David's children from his first wife?
It would be interesting to see this young lady's birth certificate.
Good luck, please keep me informed.

Fred
