Title: Williams family brick wall...............
Post by: Tallulahblossom on Sunday 03 February 13 15:11 GMT (UK)
My GG Grandmother was Elizabeth Williams & I have drawn a blank with trying to trace her birth details.  All I know is her father was a soldier called Robert Williams & she was born in Newport, Wales around 1857. She married my GG Grandad Andrew Jones in 1878 in Horsmonden, Kent but I have no idea how she came to be there! They then settled in Brenchley, Kent.

Can anyone help shed any light on her please?

There's a baptism for an Elizabeth Williams in Newport, St Paul on 30 March 1856. Parents are  Robert and Mary. I think her father might have been  Army.

father looks to have been a bandsman in the 94th Clare Militia according to the baptism

Yes it certainly would Osprey! What I don't understand though is that Williams is considered a Welsh name yet he appears to have ended up in Ireland.............

his father may have been in the army. Best look for the attestation papers to find out.

sorry about that. I didn't realise the records were from 1872 on, so too late for your man. You could ask on the armed forces board to find out about earlier records or any other records, like where the militia were at various times.

No worries was a site I hadn't heard of before, always good to try new ones out from time to time.  Have put a request on said board & will put further feelers out elsewhere in the hope someone'll know where to look  :)

Hi
Elizabeth Williams/Jones is also my great grandmother. I'm stuck at Robert Williams , have you been able to find out any further information on him or his wife?
Many thanks
Andrena

Hi Andrena,

Sorry for the late reply.  I managed to trace Robert Williams back to Donegal where he was born.  He was a Musician in the 94th Clare Militia having enlisted on 26 Jan 1855. His daughter Elizabeth was born about 1856 but sadly died at the age of around 33.

Trying to trace them from Newport to Kent is another matter & have so far been unable to trace his wife Mary but I think she may have been Mary Ann Spencer, also from Ireland.

I hope this helps.
