Title: O'kane Formil
Post by: Kane57 on Wednesday 06 February 13 23:59 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information about the Patrick O'Kane and Martha Doherty family of Formil near Glenullin.  The children are;

Margaret O'Kane who married a  Dan Boylan
Martha
Mary who went to New Zeland
Ellen who lived locally until her death in 1975
Henry who married Rose Quigg and lived locally
Catherine/ Cassie
Annie
Pat and James who died about five years old with measles
Michael
Jeanie

We think they went to Lisnacreagh school anytime between 1905-1925
This is all the information we have on our family and we think it is fairly accurate.
Any school photos or any information about their lives would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

To start with, I think this is the family in the 1911 census- but father is Daniel, not Patrick:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Gelvin/Formil/903923
Listed as Kane (interchangeable with O'Kane). Says couple married 14 years on transcription which is unlikely since Martha supposed to be only 25, Daniel supposed to be 23 and eldest child age 9.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002822931/

I think I have information on the family and the school photos I have from Lisnascreagh will likely show the children so will ahve a look in files to see what I can find.

Possibly some of Daniel's family?
"Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Patrick Kane late of Formil County Londonderry Farmer who died 7 March 1890 at Brockaghbuoy were granted at Londonderry to Ellen Kane of Formil the Widow." See www.proni.gov.uk (unfortunately link 'image' is for wrong page in Will Book)
and this one? "Administration (with the Will) of the Estate of Patrick O'Kane late of Formil County Londonderry Farmer who died 27 June 1910 granted at Londonderry to Charles O'Kane Farmer." (no Will available online but PRONI will have it along with paperwork regarding the settlement of his estate).

Thanks for the replies.
I ment to put Daniel as Martha's husband.  Patrick was Daniel's father but we are not sure who his wife was.
There was a Daniel O'Kane baptised 10 September 1885 son of Patrick and Ellen (nee Lagan) of Granahan and a Daniel O'Kane baptised 20 July 1884 son of Patrick and Mary (nee Mc Closkey ) of Clontegera.
The details in the 1901 and the 1911 census just don't add up.
The Daniel in question was an only son so the death certificates of Ellen and Mary might give an answer or perhaps their headstones when I find out where they are.

I want to thank you for the great photo but I think it was a few years too late.
A photo from a few years earlier, about 1911 would probably include them if indeed they actually went to this school.
Thanks again to both kingskerswell and aghadowey.

I have a lot of earlier photos which should be on a disk but haven't had time to look them out for you yet.

The Daniel in question was an only son so the death certificates of Ellen and Mary might give an answer or perhaps their headstones when I find out where they are.

In that case, perhaps we can eliminate Patrick O'Kane & Mary McCloskey as the parents?

I am having difficulty getting in to the wills site you named.  Can you get access to Ellen OKanes will or how can I access it?  I think she died 1912-1923, not much to go on I know.

Here's the direct link to the Will Extract search page- can't see anything for Ellen-

I can't find Ellen's will and I can't find Patricks either.  You said earlier about the link to Patricks being to
the wrong wills page, what does this mean?

It may be that Ellen didn't leave a Will or that her estate wasn't administered officially and thus would not appear in Will Extracts.

This is the extract for Patrick-
"Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Patrick Kane late of Formil County Londonderry Farmer who died 7 March 1890 at Brockaghbuoy were granted at Londonderry to Ellen Kane of Formil the Widow."
Normally if you click on image it takes you to the correct page in Will Book but unfortunately in this instance you get the Will of a Richard Kane.

I am delighted to hear from you.  I had heard of the Dunany O Kane's but I didn't know how or if they were related.  I am Daniels great granddaughter.  I am making good progress researching Daniels children.  His father Patrick was married to Ellen O Kane nee Lagan I think.  Do you know when they died or where they are buried?

Patrick married Ellen Lagan, daughter of Henry Lagan, on 25 Jun 1884 in Maghera Roman Catholic Parish Witnesses, Daniel O’Mullan, Ellen Walls.

They had one child:
Daniel “Dunany King of Formil”  (9 Sep 1885-abt 1940) Christened Maghera RC Church

According to the marriage record of Patrick and Ellen, Patrick was a widower when he married Ellen.

I don't know the name of his 1st wife. As Patrick's father was Daniel he was likely to name his 1st son "Daniel" in the usual naming order; so perhaps "The King" was his only son.

Daniel died in Portstewart where he'd been living with a daughter.

Why are they called Dunany?  Do you know the date of Ellen's death?

Thanks for your help

Máire, We haven't been able to figure out where the nickname came from. The family were originally from Dunavenny,so it may be a corruption of that. It's probably  a family nickname to distinguish them from the many O'Kane families in the area...Dan's Annie...or something like that. I've only seen it written once and that was in a newspaper report from 1882 and then it was spelled "Denany" The group I research with decided on Dunany at some stage. I think the name has only come down through the oral tradition so I suppose that spelling is as good as any!!
I don't know when Ellen died...she was still alive in 1890 when letters of administration were granted to her as the widow of Patrick Kane of Formil.

Do you know if manus o'kane (denany)who married rose hegarty had any family? Why was his father called the king of formil?
Title: Re: O'kane Formil
Post by: familyroutes on Friday 10 July 15 23:33 BST (UK)
Manus and Rosey Hegarty O'Kane had:

Margaret 1863
Rose 1864
Patrick 1866
John 1867-68
John 1868
Mary 1870
Elizabeth 1873

Daniel O'Kane, son of Patrick and nephew of Manus was the King of Formil.

According to an obituary in the Derry Journal 1903 James O'Kane was known as the King of Formil. It states that Formil is "peculiar in having a reigning house and monarch of it's own.The kingship devolves...upon the deceased's nephew Daniel O'Kane"

If the title was passed from James then he may had got it from his father Daniel (who was also Manus's father) Did you hear that he was also "The King" or or you mixing him up with his grandson Daniel?

There is also mention of the KIng of Formaeil in a poem by Fearghal Og Mac-na-Bhaird about the Battle of Down in the 13th century.

"The son of O'Cathain of the Craebh,
Son of Raghnall, King of Formaeil;
A tranquil meeting after him will be difficult;
The poetic art shall be an orphan."

Hello,

My 3rd great-grandparent is Daniel O'Kane King of Formil, son of Patrick Dunany O'Kane & Ellen Lagan, grandson of Daniel O'Kane.

My relation goes as follows:
Daniel O'Kane King of Formil & Martha Doherty
Mary O'Kane & Darby Greally
Mary Greally
Anne Palmer
Myself - Hamish McGregor

Mary O'Kane came to New Zealand on the ship "Ionic" in 1929/30. Darby Greally had already been in New Zealand for a few years. He was from Claregalway. They married here.

I'm just wondering, how does the actor Mark Gatiss fit into the picture here? I recall seeing on "Who do you think you are" a snippet of Margaret O'Kane's (nee Mullan - wife of John O'Kane) obituary, and it stated her father-in-law was Daniel O'Kane. Is this father-in-law Daniel, King of Formil?

Thanks.

Hamish,

Wondering if you hold any further ancestral details of Darby Greally? Could his parents have been Henry Greally and Margaret Long?
