Title: Charles Andre Mills
Post by: SPARHAM on Sunday 10 February 13 12:51 GMT (UK)
 ???
Hi All

Can anyone help with this sticky problem.  My 3 x Gt Uncle Charles Andre Mills was born in 1796 in St Mary Pulham Norfolk.   His parents were my 4th x Gt Grandparents, Ebenezer Mills and Marie Julienne Phillipine Andre.   Charles and Ebenezer were doctors.

The problem I am having is finding Charles' wife.  I have no maiden name but her name was Anna born c1806 in Mildenhall Suffolk.  They had a daughter Susanna born 1835 in the City of Norfolk, the same year that Charles and Anna married.

Have looked at Pallett's and Family Search.   I have found the christening details in family search but only Susanna's father is listed.  No mention of Anna in any of the census, perhaps she died in childbirth.   I find it odd that there is no reference to her anywhere.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks
SPARHAM

I wonder if Charles actually married  :-\  Every census 1851 onwards he says he is unmarried though one has been altered by an enumerator but probably as he has Susanna as a daughter with him.  I see Anc* trees have a wife as Anna.  Where is Susanna in 1841 & 1851 before she lives with her father.   (Strangely he is living next door but one to a member of my family in 1881  ;D   )

Hello,

This is a curious one!

I'm wondering if you have seen Ebenezer Mills' will?  The will was made in 1849, with a codicil dated the same year. I believe Ebenezer died in 1854.

In it, he mentions Charles Andre several times, but each time, the wording indicates that Charles has no "issue".

The will does mention two of Ebenezer's granddaughters, Susannah and Julia, but it appears these two were daughters of Philip Henry Mills, Charles' brother ....

Apologies if you have already seen it, but here's a link - http://www.norfolksources.norfolk.gov.uk/DserveNS/dserve.exe?dsqServer=NCC3CL01&dsqIni=dserveProbate.ini&dsqApp=ArchiveNS&dsqCmd=Show.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqPos=0&dsqSearch=%28%28text%29%3D%27Ebenezer%20Mills%27%29

There are about ten pages of it - this is the first ... sorry for the long link.  I tried to "shrink" it, but it wouldn't work.

To everyone thanks for your help and especially to Yorkslass.   I looked up the 1841C Rosie and he is living in Pulham St Mary with servants.  I do believe that Susanna does belong to his brother.   Rosie it is amazing that your family and Charles were neighbours.   Out of interest who was it that Charles lived near  :)  As ever I find this site invaluable and hope that I can help someone one day as much as I have been helped by this wonderful site and its contributors.

Have searched and searched today for Charles' brother's marriage i.e. Phillip Henry.  Cannot find anything.   As has been mentioned, Ebenezer was clear about his 2 grandaughters Susanna and Julia being Philip's daughters.  I am wondering if he used his middle name Henry, there are plenty of Henry Mills in Norfolk, but unfortunately am not sure which county Philip was born in.

Rosie, you are a star  :)

I discovered that Philip died in 1876 in Newton Abbott Devon and there is also Probate.  The Executor being William Primrose Mills so that definitely made me know that I was on the right track.     I found Philip as Philip Henry Miles but also saw that he was born in Pullham St Mary, so again I knew I was on the right track.  It was on Ancestry so I have indicated the correct name for any other searchers.  The info about Julia that you gave me fits right in and also I suspect the name of Susannah's maiden name to be correct as she was from Birmingham then in Warwichshire.  This has really really helped me Rosie and once again thank you so much.

Hi Rosie
Just discovered from the 1841 C, Julia Fanny Mills living with grandmother Sarah Rodway.   Really I wonder what made Philip farm his kids out??

I love this hobby lol.  I wonder if Charles Mills and your ancestor knew one another - probably did lol.

Yorkslass, thank you so much for your comment about my ancestors, and Rosie I now have to find out who Fredericus Mills aged 25 was.  It looks like another son of Philip and Susannah for sure.  I wonder if they farmed him out???

If I find anything I will let you know.

I think Fanny Julia Mills may have been the "Rodway girl" who married in Belgium.

Hi, I have Julia Fanny Mills death date which is 1855 in Warwickshire.   I don't think she was the girl who married the Belgian.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

Kind Regards
