Title: Barracks at Crossbush near Arundel
Post by: artifis on Thursday 14 February 13 17:42 GMT (UK)
I've noted an 1813 map that there was a barracks recorded near to the Batworth Park estate At Crossbush near Arundel.  It was near to where the Convent now is.

Does anyone know anything about these barracks or where I could find out about them?

Hi there

You may find the answer on GOOGLE

"Another considerable estate in Kirdford is Pleistow, or Play- stow, parcel of the manor of ...... Batworth Park is an ancient appendage to Arundel Castle. ... Cavalry barracks were built here in 1800, but have been removed".

Hi again

Been doing a bit of digging with following results:

The history and description of Arundel Castle, Sussex by C Wright, 2nd Edition dated 1818.

"The Cavalry barracks are situated on the acclivity of the hill, on the road leading to Brighton.  The situation is well selected for health and comfort in a fruitful country.  The ground was granted free of expence to government by the late Duke of Norfolk, to be restored when not used for the purpose of Barracks.  They are very commodious, and will contain 400 men, with their horses and equipement."

London Gazette - Stationed there in 1811 was the 13th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons

Great Britain: List of Barracks in Great Britain 1809 - Arundel, Sussex, 342 men, 340 Horses; Barracks Master: David St Clair

I think that should help with your query

Hi Chris,

That's brilliant, very many thanks.

I hadn't thought of Google and didn't know about the book - think I'll try and find it as I live locally and like local history. It's been niggling at me for several years since my daughter bought me a framed map centred on this area as a present.

The use as a cavalry barracks explains the shape that is drawn on the 1813 map which threw me as nothing like an infantry barracks.  It actually looks, as far as you can tell from the scale which was originally 1:63,360 (1" to the mile) enlarged to 1:40,000, like a complex version of a modern horse training establishment which of course is what it would have been.

Hope you are making good progress with your problem.

Artifis

Its a pleasure, glad to have helped.

My "little problem" is slowly showing signs of improvement, but am suffering more from the side effects of the medication (excessive sweating, etc) than the actual diagnosis.  I just wish I could find a bit more strength so I could do a bit more than sit on my backside all day - still, answering queries helps to take my mind of things.  Thanks anyway

Hi Chris.

Glad you're making progress.

That's the problem with some of the medications, the side effects. It took me two years to find a medication that I could tolerate for my high blood pressure and during that exercise I've become very sensitive to Beta Blocker medication and can't use it which has had a spin off effect on the treatment for my Glaucoma where I've had to go onto three different eye drops daily where the Beta Blocker type on its own would probably have controlled the condition.  Still at least there are these treatments available where our ancestors had none or only herbal remedies.

I am researching the barrack master at Fulford, York 1819 - on. He was Master at Arundel from 1817 -1819. His name was captain Anthony Lefroy of the 65th regiment. Any info. on him or the regiment base would be welcome.

Hi Hadrada,

Welcome to the forum.

I couldn't find any extra information to what Chris had found and didn't pursue the barracks any further I'm afraid as I don't have any ancestors who were stationed there. I was just generally interested.

I do know someone who works as a volunteer at Arundel Museum and I'll see if they know if the museum holds any records on the barracks, might take a while though as all the archivists are volunteers.

Thanks for your response. Captain Lefroy was a member of the 65 an 4th foot - regimental depot, Horsham. I believe he lived in Littlehampton. He chose to take half pay rather than fight with his regiment who were active in the Napoleonic wars. I am trying to find out why he left Arundel after only 2 years to take over York barracks in 1819 that, incidentally, paid the same salary of £180.10.00 pa.

I've been advised that if you contact the museum and explain what you are trying to discover your request will be passed to the curatorial team who may be able to help you or contact one of the volunteers who may know.

If you post again I can the send you a personal message with the email address to use - you have to make three posts to be able to send/receive personal messages.   ;)

Thanks for your help. A contact for the museum would be most useful. Cheers.

Hi, thanks for the info. The Littlehapton battery history 1800-1817 is particularly interesting. Capt. Lefroy appears to be in Littlehapton at this time, and could have been involved with the battery and its garrisoning and the setting up a permanent camp. The barracks closure in 1817 corresponds to the time he became master at Arundel. Will let you know when I have heard from the museum.

Kind of ties in quite nicely doesn't it though coincidences need to be watched.

I think the Castle is also something to follow up too especially as the Duke of Norfolk owned both the land for the battery and the barracks.

This is really interesting - where did you find the 1813 map? We are searching for an old house named Canonbernes - that may be related to them

Hi, I'm not quite sure how your research links with my interest in Lefroy, Littlehampton and Arundel Barracks.

Hi stuarteve, welcome to RootsChat.

The 1813 map was given to me as a present because of my interest in old maps and was obtained from Cassini Maps : http://www.cassinimaps.co.uk/shop/mapmaker3.asp  The map was centred around Littlehampton but went as far north as about two miles north of Crossbush/Arundel.

The map was originally at a scale of 1:63360 or 1 inch to 1 mile and was enlarged to approx. 1:40000.

I couldn't find a reference to Canonbernes or Canon-Berenes but as the map only notes large estates and large farms that's perhaps not unexpected.

I researched Canonberners and found several references to the place and the occupants Eustaces including one referring to the place being associated with the Crossbush barracks.  The earliest large map in 1:2500 is 1876 Ordnance Survey but by then the barracks had long gone - demolished in 1832.  I also found a probate record for 1933 for a Eustace so it was still there then but 1:2500 maps of 1915 don't show it and the next large scale one is in the 1970s which again doesn't show it.

I note that in the probate the address Crossbush is listed before Lyminster (Leominster on the old maps) and I did wonder if in fact it was there but that would tend to question the connection with the barracks.  I had a look on the 1876 map but few properties are named in Lyminster.

Another good old maps site is Old Maps at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/ - you can scroll across the maps which isn't straightforward on Cassini.  In the past I've bought A3 size maps from both downloaded in pdf format to then print off via a graphics programme as I don't have an A3 printer.  The resolution is excellent and in a graphics programme you can zoom in by several 100% so that might help.

Do you have any information that might help locate it better?

Looking at my map I noticed that the barracks at Littlehampton was indicated as well as those at Crossbush.

Attached is a photo of the relevant part of the map with the barracks highlighted.
