Today I asked for help finding a place and thanks to Ruskie. I now have a fuzzy picture of it from Google streetview. Ruskie thought it might be a good idea to ask for help finding the births as I had no luck with Scotlands People and I am pretty poor at researching in Scotland.
The family I am looking for is as follows:
John born abt 1805 Sandwick, Orkney, wife Jessie born abt 1807 also b Sandwick. children Margaret 1833 b ?? John 1835 Orkney, Alexander 1836 b Steamin?, Jessie b 1838, Peter b 1840, Ann b 1842, Jane b 1845, Mary b 1847, James b 1850 all born Stromness.
I also don't have a marriage for John and Jessie. I have both their Australian Death certificates and their parents are down as unknown - although Jessies maiden name reads as"Stockand"
Thanks for reading this and thank you in adance for any help, cheers Ted
They emigrated to Australia in 1852. This is the related thread if you need more information. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,635968.0.html

I found you Ted. ;D
I will have a look at SP to see if I can find anything.
Have you checked Familysearch? It can be pretty good for Scottish records.

A 'community contributed' record on the IGI says John Isbister married Jessie Storkind or Jannet Stocken 6 Dec 1832, Orkney. So this is good news and a near match for her surname on her d/c.
This will at least give you a starting point for the search.

I have found a possible match for this marriage on SP.
I searched pre 1855 banns and marriages.
I entered the surname: sto*k*
The forename: Jan*
Spouse's name: John Is*b*s*er
(other combinations might also work)
You can search using the date 1832 and the county Orkney.
There is only one result.
One of the submitted IGI records givesson Alexander's surname as Stocken or Stockend. Scottish women used their maiden surnames and married surnames almost interchangably. This makes me wonder if they were baptised with her surname? :-\

Looking for births for the children from 1833 to 1854, I searched pre 1855 births and baptisms, using the surname is*b*ster, and parent's name John. There are 18 results in Orkney - this is only a page so may be worth using some credits to look at them. I couldn't find any results for the children's baptisms using variations of Jessie's surname - st*k* etc
7 results for father John between 1801 and 1815 in Orkney.
3 matches for Jan: st*k* between 1801 and 1815 in Orkney.
They may be worth looking at if you haven't already done so. ;)

Thank you everyone. I have just got home from catering for my hubby's golf club's "relay for life" day. Happy to say we raised $1460 for Cancer research.
I will look over all the wonderful stuff you found for me as soon as I can. I have to clean the house though now because I have another charity morning tea in my house tomorrow and with the extra people living here the house is very messy.
Thanks again, luv Ted
