Title: Bill MORLEY's family- SA
Post by: blamcca on Saturday 16 February 13 10:14 GMT (UK)
William Morley was born 20 Apr 1854 in Booborowie to James and Mary (nee Swan).
In 1877 he married Mary Ann LOCKYER (not sure exactly when or where).
They had 9 children. I have plenty of info on them. Then I presume Mary died but I can't find any evidence of that.
On 18 June 1919 at Quorn Bill married Emma ASHLEY (fmly GEORGE, nee HART). She died in 1922 and he in 1931.
What I am really after is information on Bill's parents and brothers and sisters. I believe he had at least 2 brothers: James and Samuel. And 1 sister, Susan. I think Samuel was working at Mount Eba in the 1890's (so was Emma Ashley's previous husband, Henry).

A James MORLEY arrived in South Australia on board the Himalaya on 17th September 1849.

There are references on Trove Newspapers  to unclaimed letters to 1854, and property being purchased from him near Port Augusta in 1860.

There is also a John and an Elizabeth Anna Morley. I think they are all tied up.
So Norfolk may be where they came from.
That may be my James' immigration, but I think he married Mary in England. However I don't know where that thought has come from.

Blake, there are a number of James MORLEYs baptised in Norfolk on FreeReg in the right period of time, but no marriage that I could see.   :-\

I couldn't see a baptism for a Mary SWAN(N) though.

Here’s the death entry for the James MORLEY found in the Port Augusta Cemetery…..

James MORLEY aged 45 of Woolshed Flat died 18th April 1902 at Port Augusta.

And for the Samuel MORLEY….

Samuel MORLEY aged 69 of Gordon died 1st June 1916 at Port Augusta
Ref = Fro H  401/527
It states he was single, for what that is worth.

No relative listed for either of the MORLEYs.    :-\

What about the John MORLEY buried at Pt Augusta? He died in 1919. It think the Elizabeth Anna MORLEY buried there as well was his wife. There was a John Morley who married a Elizabeth Hannah ROWE in 1907.

Here's that marriage....

John MORLEY aged 63 and widowed married Elizabeth Hannah ROWE aged 53 and widowed on 26th August 1907 at the residence of Mrs W McDowell, Port Augusta.
Fathers = James MORLEY & James BERRYMAN
Ref = Fro 232/979

There are other marriages with James MORLEY as father but not in that area, and there were other James MORLEYs.   :-\

And unfortunately, the Biographical Index of South Australians reveals nothing.   :(

One of these days something may pop up in the records, Blake.  I waited 18 years to break down one of my brick walls.   ::)   ;D

Could this be a possible death for James? He’d be about the right age…..even if that is accurate.

James MORLEY aged 79 of Adelaide died 2nd October 1903 at Adelaide

Here's the 1919 death for John.....

John MORLEY aged 77 and single of Davenport died 10th December 1919 at Davenport.
No relatives listed.
Ref = Fro 434/4
If his age is correct, that means a birth of about 1847, which could fit.

I've also found that the passenger list for the James MORLEY who arrived on the Himalaya has him aged 50, a labourer, from Surrey.   :-\

In 1841 there's a James Morley, aged 20, (ages are rounded up or down) in Wretton in Norfolk. he's a bricklayer, unfortunately not living with his family.   :(

There are two other James Morleys in Norfolk in the right age bracket, both are labourers with their families.

In the parish of St Saviour, Norwich there’s the following…..

Elizabeth Swann    35
Mary Swann    20 shoe binder

This is the only Mary SWAN(N) I can find for 1841 in Norfolk.   :-\

Was Mary a widow? Otherwise I am quite confused to where the SWAN comes from in Bill's birth registration.
Thanks for all this everyone.
Gerry you found them! Thanks. So, John wasn't a Morley. He was originally a Green and must've taken the name MORLEY.

I am getting confused. I think John was actually illegitimate and GREEN was Mary's surname.
So have no idea where SWAN came from.

Post by: deeiluka on Sunday 17 February 13 07:37 GMT (UK)
John GREEN was baptised 15th October 1843 in St Peter's, Hockwold.
Mother = Mary GREEN. Abode = Wilton.
No father given.

If he was illegitimate, then his father may still have been James MORLEY.   ;)

Marriage on FreeBMD....

James MORLEY to Mary GREEN  June Qtr 1844 Thetford District
13/503

But William's birth registration definitely says Mary SWAN. Have you sighted the certificate? Only thing I can think of is a major mistranscription error.  Or there is another James Morley/ Mary SWAN having children by the same names in Norfolk. But there's no sign of them.

Very True Dee. Except if it was his I think they probably would've married before the birth or shortly after.

Wow that ancestor certainly sounds interesting.
Emma (who married William) had previously been married twice and had 3 partnerships. Between marriage number 1 and 2 she had an illegitimate son with her sister's husband!

Post by: deeiluka on Sunday 17 February 13 08:17 GMT (UK)
Summarising… all these children were baptised in St Peter’s, Hockwold, Norfolk with parents James MORLEY, bricklayer, and Mary/Mary Ann GREEN……

John….baptised GREEN we think came to S.A. His father not given as MORLEY…… On 1851 Census

Samuel….we think came to SA….. On 1851 Census

Ellen….we think died on way out.

Emma baptised Feb 1850

William baptised Jan 1848 …..FreeBMD has the death of a William MORLEY Sep Qtr 1850 in district of Thetford.

Can’t find a death for Emma!

The Problem? If this is the family, why is Mary's maiden name given as SWAN when the next child, named William, is born in SA?

Dee    :)

Back on the John GREEN thing. I think you may be right about him actually being James' son, because on the census he is stated as son, not step-son or son-in-law (I have seen them described as this).
No I couldn't find one for Emma either.
It is a pity we can't find registrations for James or Susan Ann who must also have been born in SA. It'd be interesting to see what the maiden name of Mary was given as. Perhaps SWAN was her mother's maiden name. I have another ancestor, who on most of her children's birth registrations used her mother's maiden name, rather than her's.

Unfortunately, lots of births etc for the period we're looking at are missing.....either unregistered, or the registrations haven't survived. Sometimes local registrations haven't made the index as well.

There’s the baptism on FreeREG of Mary GREEN , 20th May 1827 at St Peter’s, Hockwold, Norfolk. Parents John GREEN, labourer,  and Sarah.

So annoying that mother's maiden name isn't given.

Thank you Cristobel for the post on the marriage of Susan Ann Morley to Joseph Henry Bacon.  We cannot find any records of Susan's birth and there are so many Susans and James's (her father).  Would appreciate it if anyone has any more information on these two.   Am interested in Handy771's research as they are correct - Susan Ann married a Bacon and their youngest son John's youngest daughter married a Brown.

Hello Birdy22,
I'm sorry that I haven't replied sooner, but I've been in the process of moving house and our internet was only connected on Friday last. I'm gradually trying to catch up in between unpacking boxes!

Morley is not a name on our family tree. My mother's line contains the names Bauer, Ehmcke, Selway, Button, Deimel and Redwood.

Feel free to use the personal message system of RootsChat is you want to chat personally about the similarity.

Good morning everyone. We too are researching Susan Morley - adopted by James Morley around 1860/61. Birth mother's name was Matilda who worked as a domestic at Burra, SA. We have hired a professional geneologist to review the SA records. Any further information would be much appreciated. Sean Synnott, Boonah, Queensland.

My great grandmother was Ellen - Susan's daughter.
