Title: Plymouth Brethren in Dromore area
Post by: OTTO on Sunday 05 June 05 16:01 BST (UK)
Hi to all,
I'm researching ancestors in the Dromore area around 1830-1900, who were Plymouth Brethren. Does anyone have information about where I might be able to get details of any records that may help me find out more about these ancestors.

It's not an answer but I also have Plymouth Brethren relatives from Dromore but I don't know where you can find out more info.

It's a bit silly really but a branch of that family came out to Oz a few years back and managed to annoy everyone (all their OZ relatives) so much that no-one was speaking to them after a while. So I have lost all track of a possible good source of information.

Otto:
Not sure if you have this. It is a very comprehensive bibliographyof the holdings at the John Ryland's University Library at Univeristy of Manchester. In addition to the books listed take a look at the description of the manuscripts holdings.

Hi Otto!

You might try Liverpool too ! - I'm pretty sure the  Ebenezer Chapel, Queens Drive
Walton was Plymouth Bretheren - if it's still there - they may be able to give you some advice - also you might try Lancashire FHS !!

Hello OTTO

strangely enough I also have been reading about the Plymouth Brethren in the Dromore area, although in the case of my ancestores (falloons) it is more hunch than fact.  However, I now seem to know an awful lot about them, but not what I needed to know particularly (names, families, journal etc - happy to share that with you in case there is anything there that would be of more use to you?)

I've been a historian of the (mostly Open) Plymouth Brethren for over 20 years, and would love to help with uncovering family information for anyone in need or curiosity.

Hi Doug, A good many of my family circle around the Dromore/Lurgan/Banbridge area are `Brethren`, not locally known as plymouth brethren though, but i guess one and the same.

What i always wondered was how and when there came to be such numbers of them here in N. Ireland. Where did they originally come from and why?

There are a number of Brethren Meeting Houses around Co Antrim where I live. As with Dromore, they just call themselves Brethren, not Plymouth Brethren.  The denomination was largely founded in Ireland and in this area many of the original members were Presbyterians who sought a stricter interpretation of the gospels, and so switched to the new denomination.

As Presbyterians, most would originally have been settlers from Scotland in the 1600s, but the main switch to Brethren appears to have taken place in the mid to late 1800s.

I am researching my sister-in-law's family, the Stewarts, from Dromore.  There is a Stewart family living on Gallows Street listed in the 1901 Census.  They give their religion as "Brethern" [sic].  John Nelson Darby who founded the Brethren did significant work in Ireland, really founded the movement there.
