Hello all you good lookers!! ;)
We have a marriage for Arthur Henry BEART to Ethel Mary GAUNT - they married in Victoria 1894 # 2096
then to Queensland where they had a son Arthur born 1899. (Possibly his second name was Maxwell - he's the only one who seems to fit, and Maxwell is a much used name in this branch of the family.)
Ethel Mary BEART had a daughter - (apparently out of wedlock) - Dorothy Heaton COOPER - father John Heaton COOPER. Born 4 Aug 1906 in Queensland - #009929
Ethel died in 1906 - it just say 7 1906 on the record I can see - please can someone see more - I am presuming Ethel died in Childbirth, or very soon after. #003215
It appears Arthur married again in South Australia to Clare SILVER 1909. Page 709 vol 329
What I am looking for is . .
1. What became of Dorothy COOPER? - I can't find any more trace of her -
2. What became of Arthur BEART jnr - I have a possible marriage date for A M Beart in 1917-1920 South Australia. and a possible death in 1961 also S.A.
There was some talk that Ethel had taken son, Arthur, to Tasmania to be brought up by the family there -
There's something funny going on here with Ethel we think ::) :-\
- maybe Arthur Hy Beart went and claimed his son back after her death . . . .
Any assistance would be most gratefully received.

Wow, you guys have been busy. All I had written next to Ethel's photo (assuming it is her) is
Alec Beart b. 1896
Arthur Maxwell Beart b 1899
Dorothy Heaton Cooper b. 1906. Father not listed but when you read trove newspaper on the divorce, the neighbour was the Heaton Cooper bloke. I remember finding another article approx 21yrs later that mentions Dorothy and her father, still in Qld. I assumed she died from complications after childbirth. it looks like Beart took his son with him and the daughter stayed with her father.
The poor baby, I'll have to read over that again, I always wondered where he was buried and which sister he was sent to. Sounds like Ethel was a skeleton in the Gaunt closet, wonder why her father Charles didn't step in to help at that time. My Grandma knows nothing of her story....
-
Beart did go to WA to join his brother, so that makes sense. thanks for finding baby Alec's middle name - Graeme, am now thinking that he may may have been named for his uncle Gray (Marcus Graeme Gaunt).
-
One more question. Can anyone find out if Dorothy Heaton Cooper (married name North?) ever had children? Would love to find some living cousins!
-
so far I've not even found the Cooper North marriage - but . . . . .

You are obviously 'up there for thinking' Cando!! Very good deductions there - Might see if the marriage is listed in Trove - it might be - or maybe not - I will have a look! ;D
Thanks Muss - I'm going to let Julie chase up all the burials! ;) After all - it is her Great-great-aunt and family!! ;D
I've just been going back through the thread adding links and knowledge to the family tree - As you can probably tell, Julie (gaunt) is a closer rellie than I am - being from the same line of the Gaunt family - My G-grandfather was brother of her GGgrandfather, father of Ethel Mary Gaunt. ('cos she's young!!! ;) ;))

I'll second that - What are you looking at that I can't see??
101 is a decent age isn't it!!
Don't suppose you can see a marriage for John Heaton Cooper and Ethel Mary Beart can you -
(Dem uvvers don't seem to be able to!) ;) ;) :P
It is possible they didn't have time to be married, what with the divorce in 1904 and her dying in 1906.
OK, don't take offence - you are all stars! Medals all round!! ;D ;D
I've been looking up electoral rolls until 1980 and it doesn't look as if Thomas and Dorothy North had any children. Not showing on the rolls anyhow!
Trove isn't throwing up any births either - but you know how limited my access to births records is!

That is truly amazing. Thank you for the answers. I can't believe Dorothy was 101. Wonder if she knew about her mother and other brothers. Hoping she had a happy life!
-
I just found an inconsistency. Baby Alec Graeme Beart died in Dec 1896 in Launceston Tas. but the newspaper article reporting on the divorce case says that Ethel was in WA when notified that her baby died and returned to Melb for an operation in Oct 1897, paying for all funeral expenses etc of her baby, then returned to Qld in Nov 1897. So, did the paper get the years wrong and the months or did the bdm records?
-
probably took until 1897 to get the news in WA - and then to get back to Melbourne. :-\ Also you can pay for expenses after the event.
- And didn't the newspaper say Arthur didn't want her to come back for the funeral - I thought I read that as part of the court case. I'd better read it again. :-\ :-\
And they wouldn't have waited to bury the child until Mum arrived back . . . .
I reckon it stacks up :-\
Wiggy
-
Just read it again - received news by telegram - but in those days I doubt she'd have travelled back immediately - specially as she wasn't well and had had such a long trip over - the long sea trip then another three days on the coach. And it seems Arthur wasn't encouraging her to come back for the child. Seems to have been a pretty rotten marriage all up!
But it does look as if she paid the expenses afterwards - or by a bank draft - however they worked in those days.
-
Searching for any of the Gaunt family at Invermay (suburb of Launceston) Tas, that would have received baby Alec Graeme Beart from a Melbourne steamer, sometime before his death (early Dec 1896) and cared for him. Checking passenger lists, his mother would have come by steamer to Melb? Then he was transferred to a steamer to a sister in Tas. By that year, I'd assumed all the immediate family had gone to Ulverstone, Nietta, Casta areas....
-
A Queensland Government Gazette shows that Arthur H Beart had an Agricultural Lease, 513 acres 3r 5p, Portion 69v in the Parish of Westwood leased at 3d per acre. Looks like he took the lease out in 1899.
On 7th April 1906 in the Queensland Government Gazette there was a Matrimonial Causes Jurisdiction in the Supreme Court of Queensland where a writ of Ferie Facias was issued upon a judgement obtained by the Plaintif, Ethel Mary Beart against the Defendant, Arthur Henry Beart. Basically this meant that the 513 acres, portion 69v would be sold off on 7th May 1906 by Public Auction in Rockhampton.

Hi,
Went to the Qld State Archives today and had a quick look at the Qld State Annotated Electoral Rolls to see if there was an annotation for Dorothy and there was.
the 15th Jan 1947 ER (Blackall) had Dorothy Heaton Cooper with the Cooper crossed out and annotated 'North" with the hand written comments 'Re Reg 1946'
Dorothy was still Cooper in the 30th Jan 1946 ER so it looks like a marriage during 1946.
The Archives also holds file papers relating to the divorce proceedings between Ethel Mary Beart & Arthur Henry Beart. There are many pages with including witness statements and accusations etc but there is some interesting info including.
Ethel & Arthur were married at East Melbourne 9th May 1894.
They then lived at, Christmas Hills, Victoria, Sydney, Nulubin Station, Queensland, Menzies Western Australia and finally Westwood Queensland.
April 1896 Arthur left Qld for WA, September 1896 Ethel went to Menzies WA to confront Arthur, November 1899 they both went to Westwood in Qld.
Gerry
-
Hi Gerry,
Thanks for that - do you know if it is possible to buy copies of all those file papers about the divorce?
Also thanks for narrowing the time of marriage for Dorothy!! You are a star!! :D
Thanks for looking in the archives for us!
Wiggy :)
-
I think you can, they would charge for the photocopying & post I assume.
It was item No 8063 Series No 18679 (Briefs, Correspondence and Papers)
The case, Ethel Mary Beart v Arthur Henry Beart (Defendant) and Margaret Triffit ( Co- Defendant) re application fo divorce.
If had I remembered to take my camera I would have photographed the lot. I have more to do at the archives in the next week or so so I'll se if I can take photos next time.
Gerry
-
Thanks Gerry!! :)
-
And a big thanks from me too, Gerry
-
Hi,
Went to the Qld State Archives and what I thought was one file on the Beart v Beart was actually 3 individual file bundles tightly wrapped and tied up with each bundle held together in a corner the equivalent of an 1905 staple.
With the assistance of an Archivist we tried to lay some pages out to photgraph but it was very difficult, the pages had been held in tight bundles for 100 years plus there were many pages in various states of condition.
The Archives could probably copy the papers for you but it would be expensive I expect or next time I'm there I could make some more notes from these files if there was anything specific you may be seeking. I had previously looked at one bundle and posed a few notes but there maybe more you are seeking.
Regards
Gerry

Thanks for you time and effort Gerry - :D

New user to this forum. My brother and his family live in the house in Colonel Light Gardens once owned (must have been briefly), by Arthur Henry Beart and his new wife Clare. The house was interestingly built in 1926, the same year he died. After Clare died, the property was transferred to Emily Velma Beart (died 2012) and William Bryan Beart (died 3/11/1993). I also have a i different date of 1965 of Clare's death, obtained from the Lands Titles Office. I'll be sure to dig a bit further into that.
Check out the house! http://www.reviewproperty.com.au/ore/Public/Gallery/Photo.aspx?adid=2009639168&pic=2&mode=Sold&AgencyID=15924&st=1
By the way, Arthur Henry Beart died in Parkside Lunatic Asylum. Refer to Police reports to the Coroner 1926. On the deaths of patients at Parkside and Adelaide Lunatic Asylums. GRG 1/44
I also found that Dorothy was writing to her "uncle Ernest James Beart's daughter", Kathleen Mary BEART, born 23-11-1899 at Kapunda. Her mother was Kathleen (birth reg. as Catherine) ODonoghue born 14 March 1868. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/AUS-SAGEN/2004-07/1090106961
