This is my first post, so be kind to me ;D Let me know if I am doing this all wrong!
I am looking for information about the Thornes and Jessop families from Hunslet, Leeds. My records show that John Lee Thornes (1854) and Eliza Jessop (1866) had the following children:
Elsie Thornes (b.1897)
Carrie Thornes (b.1897- d. 1897)
Annie Thornes (b. 1889)
Mildred Thornes (1901)
Eliza Jessop's father was Thomas Jessop (1846)
She had the following siblings:
Emma J. Jessop (b. 1869)
Ann Jessop (b. 1871)
Caroline Jessop (b. 1874)
Willie Jessop (b. 1875)
Mary Jessop (b. 1877)
Tom Jessop (b. 1881)
I know that Eliza eventually went to the United States with William Bindley in March 1910. According to my grandfather (Eliza was his grandmother), some members of the Thornes family migrated to the US and other remained in England. I am trying to find anything I can to locate any of the living relatives of these Thornes or Jessops.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me.
Kind regards,
Amy

Hello Amy,
All three children you mention (Annie, Elsie, Mildred) sailed to New York with Eliza and William Bindley, all are entered as Bindley on the passenger list.
So which Thornes stayed in England? Are you referring to John Lee Thornes siblings?
I did see in 1901 John and Eliza have a son Fred age 19, but he doesn't show on the 1891 census. Do you know anything about him?
-
Was John Lee T married twice and Fred the son of his first wife?
A john Lee Thornes married Clara Burton Jun 26th 1875 at Parish Church Leeds.
John Lee 20, Mule Spinner, father - Henry (Mule Spinner)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And a possible death for Clara Thornes, Sept qrt 1881, Leeds, 9b/227
A birth..... Fred Thornes, Sept qrt 1881, Leeds, 9b/503.
-
I can see the 'bindleys' on US census but assume you have those?
-
Dear Libby9 ;D ;D ;D
Thanks so much. I could not figure out the Fred Thornes connection, but I think you got it. It looks like Clara was his mom and maybe she died in childbirth? I also was confused about Fred only appearing on the 1901 census but not the 1891 census. Where was he? I guess I should be looking at Clara's siblings and John Lee's in case they took him in after his mom died? I know nothing about him. He only appeared in the 1901 census- just to confuse me ::)
I can see in the marriage index that Eliza Thornes and John Lee both are listed in the same year- cant find the date now. I cant find parish records. But what is strange is that when Eliza takes Annie, Elsie, and Mildred to the States in 1910, John Lee appears in the 1911 census as widowed. (Visiting his sister when the census was taken) According to my grandfather's accounts, Elsie never legally took the Bindley name , but just used it to travel. Would Eliza have obtained a divorce? We were always told John Lee died and she remarried William Bindley.
My understanding was that the MANY members of Thornes and Jessop family moved to the states and then moved back. From what I see now, I think that Eliza's Jessop family and Thornes siblings remained in England and only Eliza left. My great grandmother Elsie (now Bennett) returned to Leeds via Liverpool during WWI with her son Donald to escape a polio epidemic in NY. She stayed with an Aunt. I think that what I need to do is start focusing on the Jessops and Thornes in England. I can't seem to find anyone on any sites researching "my" branches of the family!
Thank you so much for helping out with Fred. I really appreciate it. I think I need to step back and figure where to go next!!!!
Kind regards, Amy
Would Eliza have obtained a divorce?
It's doubtful Amy, divorce was unaffordable to all except the wealthy back then.
Dear Libby9 and Jane,
I can't even begin to thank you. As you can tell, I have no clue how to navigate the British side of this search! I've had lots of success with tracing my Bennett heritage in the States. Although that side had fascinating, mind blowing things going on, half of my southern family moved north because they were mixed race and could "pass" as white, I think that the England side was filled with lots of heartache and toiled in difficult factory jobs. I would love any recommendations for books about the Leeds area in the 1800s and early 1900s.
I think I told you that I am American, but am married to a man from near Bath, England? I am bringing the kids to see their grandparents at Easter. I would love to head North without kids. As a newby at this, my gut instinct is to go to Leeds to poke around. Would I be able to find records there that I can't get online? (I know I have bombarded you with questions, please don't feel obligated to answer!!!!!)
Once again, you have made my day! I can't wait to send this to my family. Thanks.
Kind regards,
Amy
Hi Amy,
I will try and answer your questions later, I'm a bit distracted just now. Meanwhile you may find this site of interest, there's lots of photos of old Leeds.
Amy, if you do decide to visit Leeds you'll find the family history library within Leeds City Library has a lot of good resources, they have parish registers, electoral rolls, index to wills, old maps, old photos and much more. The staff are helpful and will point you toward resources relevant to your search. If you find a will of interest in the index there's an office in the city centre where they can be ordered and paid for, (library staff will give you directions). http://www.mylearning.org/museums/leeds-library-and-information-service/
Also in Leeds........... http://www.yas.org.uk/content/claremont.html
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank Jane and Libby9. You have helped me immensely. I am getting my ducks in a row and will start my search at the Leeds Library when I get to England. And, no questions in this post!
Amy
You would probably find it of interest to look at the Leodis website , which has thousands of pictures of old Leeds. It may include some of the areas suggested by the addresses given in the earlier replies to your message.
Good Luck !
Thanks, Malcolm H! I have been looking through the site and have found interesting things in it and the other suggestions in the posts!
Hi. My grandad was Arthur Pemberton Thornes 25/11/1906. His mother and father were Fred and Alice Thornes. The went to America in 1912 but my great grandma Alice didn’t want to catch the Titanic because she had a “funny feeling” so opted to go in the September instead. Good job really or I wouldn’t be typing this now. Arthur had a son, Peter who married Pauline Dawson (my parents). I am Phillip and have a brother and sister, Steven and Janet. I had no idea there were so many of us although my niece did look into the family tree and found some distant relatives from Dewsbury and surrounding areas. Would love to know more. Are you related to me, that could be interesting? Would love to hear from you. Phillip Thornes
Your great grandmother may not have been the only one to have had a 'funny feeling'. Lady Ismay intended to be on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, but changed her mind. My mothers 'auntie' Mary Atwell (1879 to 1946ish) was her ladies maid, and would have gone too.
Another lucky escape!
Hi @abenne
I have come across this thread from a while back and Phil1313 who replied to you is my uncle.
Arthur Pemberton Thornes was my great grandfather.
I currently have a tree on ancestry UK and I am tracing the Thornes side.
I have got back to Henry Thornes, who was John Lee Thornes father.
John Lee Thornes married Clara Ann Burton who died in around 1881 I believe but I think this is Fred Thornes mother as well as Lily Thornes mum (Clara possibly died giving birth to Fred?)
Anyway, Fred went on to marry Eliza Jessop and they went to America.
Looking at it all, Eliza went on to marry William Bindley I have no idea why.
A few of the Thornes went to the USA, including Annie Thornes who married William Randall, they went on to have a child called Hilda Edna. Hilda Edna married DeWolf Duncan Ruhwedel and had a daughter called Joyce. Joyce went on to marry Edward Lawrence Reinheimer.
My grandad Peter Thornes was Arthur Thornes son, Fred Thornes was his grandad and John Lee was my grandads great grandad. Peter Thornes remembers Joyce and think he met her once.
He said that Fred did have a step mum and she was mean to him, this could be Eliza.
I am stuck because when Eliza married William Bindley, on all the records in the USA it has their surname as Bindley, but he wasn't their father John Lee Thornes was.
I am interested to see what you have if you're wiling to share, and likewise I will do the same. I think somewhere down the long line we are related in someway and I am keen to find out more on the Thornes side that went to the USA.
If you would like to talk further, please let me know.
Thanks
Natalie
