Title: Ballard Co offally
Post by: son of a fifer on Thursday 14 March 13 17:21 GMT (UK)
Can trace my gran on my dads side to Ballard-just wondering what kind and size of a community it would have been around 1880's.
Presuming it is/was a farming area as she was married to a shepherd prior to coming over to Scotland.
Any info would be appreciated.

Hello,

Ballard is in Lynally Civil Parish, Kings County.
There is a description here (http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/descriptions/entry_page.jsp?text_id=4028670) of the parish in 1837 (a bit early for you but probably not changed too much).
In 1850s - Griffiths Valuation shows the householders of Ballard here (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&PlaceID=726539&county=Offaly&barony=Ballycowan&parish=Lynally&townland=<b>Ballard</b>).  There is a bit more detail as shown.
Perhaps you will find your family name?

1901 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1901&surname=&exact=&firstname=&county=King%27s+Co.&townland=ballard&ded=&age=&sex=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=&birthplace=&language=&deafdumb=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=100)  shows that there were 82 people living in Ballard.

best wishes
heywood
