Title: Henry Lowe
Post by: Mary34 on Saturday 16 March 13 22:56 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find the birth and the marriage of Henry Lowe.   He had several children, one of whom is Thomas Arthur Lowe who married Agnes Christina Wood.    I cannot find Henry's birth or parents and I cannot find Thomas Arthur's birth.   Am wondering if anyone is able to assist me.   It is believed that Henry Lowe established the drapery business of Lowe and Moorhouse Drapery Ltd.   Don't know whether that is of any help.   Through census I have found that (if I am on the right track) Henry had 6 children, but I am not sure about this.    The only thing I am sure of is that Henry's son Thomas Arthur married Agnes Christina Wood in 1911.   any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Am sorry about the dates, but my info has no dates for Henry and I think Thomas was born about 1874.  I only know for sure that Thomas Arthur the son died July 1933.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I also should have said that I do know that the family were from the Yorkshire, Northumberland area and Thomas Arthur was a draper.

Do you think Thompson is her maiden name or is it Elliott with Thompson as a third name?

Arthur Eric had 2 sisters, Margaret Isabel and I don't think she ever married, so no Thompson there and his other sister Dorothy married an Archibald George Allan so none there either.  Must have been a mistake and a co-incidence in the probate.    Joan Katherine, wife of Arthur Eric, was born in NZ and married Arthur Eric in UK and they had 3 sons.   After Eric (as he was known as) passed away, Joan remarried and came back to NZ where she died.    I only met her once, but heard many tales of her (she was a bit of a character) from her oldest son Graeme and Grandson Andy.  Cheers Mary34

Hi again, that marriage of Henry to Mary Ann in York now looks good, as the Elliott family were there in 1851 and 1861 at Bishophill Junior, York 1851 HO107/2354/216/53 and 1861 RG09/3548/47/1

In 1851 Henry Lowe is aged 26 occ Draper and is a visitor/boarder in Liverpool HO107/2179/494/28

Clair, the Swallows are good family friends of the Lowe family.   Still waiting to hear if the Thompson's are tied up in any other way than as accountant.

Hi,
Can anyone go back before Henry Lowe (1823-1911) or Mary Ann Thompson (1837-1914). I seem to have it a dead-end there.
I do know that the son, Thomas A Lowe (1873-1933), married Agnes C Wood (1876-?) how had parents William Wood (1837-1915) and Margaret Taylor (1840-1896), and can go back to James Wood (1810-?) who married Christy?
These are my great x3 grandgathers.
Ben

Welcome to Rootschat, Ben.

This might help:

Marriage St Paul York 14 March 1857

Henry Lowe Draper Bachelor Residence Newcastle Upon Tyne Father James Lowe Farmer
Mary Ann Elliott Spinster Residence Oxford Street Father Joseph Elliott Engine Driver

One witness is an Isabella Elliott.

Earlier in the thread Claire found a baptism in Shropshire for Henry with parents James and Mary - father's occupation on parish record is farmer.

Possible marriage for Henry's parents 16 June 1808 Bitterley,Shropshire

James Lowe of the parish of Burford bachelor and Mary Adney of this parish spinster.

There is a burial for a James Lowe in Burford 9 April 1838 aged 59 Residence given as Greenway Head and one for a Mary Ann Lowe 24 May 1843 aged 63 (also Greenway Head).

Mary would appear to be in Burford at Greenway Head with sons Thomas and James in 1841  census.

Also note that James appears in the death duty registers and so may have left a will.(Hereford) as did so James who died in 1858.

William

Added Re Mary Ann Elliot - parents marriage Longbenton 2 Jan 1832 Joseph Elliott and Hannah Watkin. Joseph Elliott's occupation in 1851 census in York is engine driver.
