Title: Elder family from Edinburgh, and possibly Prestonpans east of Edinburgh
Post by: sandir03 on Wednesday 20 March 13 06:34 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I’m trying to find some information on the Elder family.

What I have so far :

1.  Andrew Elder b. about 1896, aged 31 years when married Evelyn Morrison b. 20/10/1902, aged 24 years,  in Edinburgh on 19/08/1927. They had one child in Edinburgh, before Evelyn died on 04/08/1930 in Edinburgh. This child is still alive, so details removed by moderator in line with Rootschat policy of not discussing living relatives.

2.  At the time of his marriage to Evelyn, Andrew was living at Sunny Bank Cottage, Lower London Road, Edinburgh.

3.  From their marriage record, the father of Andrew is George Elder, a cooper, and the mother is possibly a “Janet Smith” – hard to decipher the faded writing.

4. George may have had a brother James and a sister Mary.

5. The town name Prestonpans, east of Edinburgh may be a link.

6. After Evelyn died, Andrew went on to marry a Mary Wanless and had a son. Later he married an Isabella surname unknown. Andrew Snr died about 1976.

Is the someone who may be able to help me with any information about Andrew Elder and his family/his mother’s family – parents, grandparents, etc?

Thanking  you in advance.

Sandi

Yes, that seems to be the one.

Familysearch also shows George's baptism:

George Elder b.11/9/1839, bp.22/9/1839 Burntisland, Fife, son of William Elder and Margaret Blyth.

Thanks so much everyone for your contributions re the ELDER family.

It now gives me lots of information that I can pass onto the living relative of Andrew Elder and Evelyn (nee Morrison).

Much appreciated.

Hi Sandi

I have been doing some family research on this family for my cousin.  Maybe I can be of help to you.

I have today received Andrew Elder 1896 death certificate from 1969.  Evelyn Morrison was my Mother's sister.   Wish I'd seen your message before but not been on for a while.

Kind regards

Karen Walker

Hi

I have been working on the Elder tree for a few years now for my cousin Agnes.  Her father was Andrew Elder senior and her mother Evelyn Morrison.
After Evelyns death Andrew married Mary Wanless.   If we have the same Andrew please get in touch.

Thanks

Karen

Hi Karen yes my Grandmother was Mary Wanless and my Grandfather was Andrew Elder.
Is Agnes still alive ?  My dad has spoken about a sister who moved to Austrialia is this Agnes or relatives?

Hi charlie07,
Thanks for your reply. I know Karen (a step-in-law relative, though we have never met) and we correspond regularly. I also know Agnes (Karen's cousin and your Grandfather's step-sister) very well and we keep in touch, in fact she phoned me yesterday afternoon and we had a catch-up chat. She will be turning 89 next month. And yes, both Agnes and I are in Australia - different States though.

My 'relationship' with Agnes is really through my in-law side of the family - all from Scotland. My late mother-in-law's (Rebecca MacAndrew - 1st husband John Ritchie) second husband was Leonard Montgomery Stark who was previously married to Isabella Naismith Morrison (5th born of the 7 Morrison girls). She was sister to Evelyn Morrison who was married to Andrew Elder - your Grandfather. I know, it's all very confusing!!
