Title: "The Briggait" Bridgegate Glasgow
Post by: maggbill on Wednesday 20 March 13 11:07 GMT (UK)
Am researching family who lived at 137 Bridgegate Glasgow, in the 1911 census.   The mother of the family was a Fishmonger - appropriate, cos at 141 Bridgegate was the Bridgegate Fish Market - which of recent years has become "The Briggait" cultural and arts centre I believe?   Beautiful old building, but wonder about the lovely smells there must have been, living close to it as a Fish Market!  Have checked out Google street views of current situation, also old photos on Virtual Mitchell.  Finding it hard to figure out whether "137" is actually part of the current Briggait building, or if it was a taller tenement building in old photo of 1950's found in V.M.  (Seems there could have been a tenement on either side of the Briggait - not there now.

I have found out a bit of The Briggait's old history, and its recent uses and restoration... What I would like to know is does anyone have knowledge of its situation between 1900 and 1940?  Photos?  Any comments welcomed.

A different approach, as an alternative to photos. Have you checked the Post Office directories of the time to see what they show for the address? There has been a recent release of later directories for the Glasgow area.

The 1927 directory has been available for some time here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~glasgow/index-glas.htm

The latest releases, 1931-42, are available here http://archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Ascottishdirectories&sort=-publicdate

Can't see 137 easily on the 1913-14 Valuation Rolls http://www.theglasgowstory.com/imageview.php?inum=TGSV09092

With all of its history, what a wonderful redevelopment of the location in recent years www.waspsstudios.org.uk/studios-spaces/briggait-merchant-city

Hi Monica,

thanks for that suggestion - didn't think of it... Have a copy of the 1927 directory, but will follow up the later ones too...
