If you find one of your ancestors in an Archives Canada online search of Western Land Grants you will be given a description of the property which includes quarter section (NE, NW, SE, SW), section ( 1 to 36), township number, range number and survey system (E1, W1, W2, W3, W4, W5, W6) which can be somewhat confusing. There is now an online site at http://www.legallandconverter.com (http://www.legallandconverter.com) which allows one to enter the quarter section info and with a single button click use one of 3 mapping apps to find the precise location of the quarter section which is normally a square parcel half a mile long on each side containing 160 acres.

Thanks so much for posting this link. I've been looking for help on locating homestead locations for a while now! Very helpful.
