In the hope that he/she is still out there, 5th Battalion RDF was a militia (part time) battalion. He attended his annual training in the year he joined up, 1904, but in May 1905 he was thrown out, the reason is not recorded.

Hi MaxD and all others who have responded to this thread. Unfortunately my wife who is markeve is no longer able to communicate with you, she is suffering dementia and is unable to use a pc or tablet or indeed anything else, TV, washing machines, microwaves etc. She now has very short memory, by that I mean just a few minutes. Can I thank you all for your help with her grandfather's history, some blind ally's (we've all been down them) but others that have been very helpful. MaxD, that last one was indeed her grandfather, thank you.

I will from time to time still come back on here because of all the good information and help you kind people have given us (yes, me included), now that I'm able to login and use her username.

Once again, thank you all very much. Dave.
