What was William's occupation?

There could be a military connection.  His birth was around the time of the Peninsular War.  A William Fowkes born Northampton served in the 20th Dragoons between 1799 and 1818 (when he was discharged aged 39) - this man could well have been serving in Portugal in 1808 and is a good candidate for your William's father.

That's brilliant, my family all come from Northampton so has to be the same one.  Thank you so much.
