Thomas Reid Keill is shown in 1901 census as being born in Glasgow in 1891". In 1901 he is living in Elgin with Alexander Keill and family and is recorded as being "adopted son of cousin". We cant find him in 1911 census but there is a marriage recorded in Alves in 1919 to Isabella McCook. Can anyone help find where he was between 1901 and 1919 and even better his birth details, so that we can fill the gaps in the family tree. Thanks!

Have you looked on the ScotlandsPeople web site? You can view and download birth, marriage and death certificates there, and also the 1911 census. It's a pay to use site but it's the only way to access certificates.

If he was adopted, his birth surname may not have been Keil(l). Have you checked for a birth under the surname Reid? Did you check for plain Thomas Keil(l)?
Also, the original of the census does not tell you the year of birth. It tells you the age the person was said to be on the date of the census. The 1901 census was taken on 31 March. Therefore a person aged 10 on the 1901 census would have been born between 1 April 1890 and 31 March 1891, not 'in 1891'. Because the census was usually taken around the end of March, 'calculating' a year of birth by subtracting the age from the year of the census gives you the wrong answer three times out of four. So have you checked for a birth in 1890?
Assuming his age is actually correct in 1901, he should be in the 1891 census as a baby. Have you tried that?
So, we have (presumably) a 10-year-old child in the 1901 census in Elgin, birthplace given as Glasgow. Does the household contain a cousin who could possibly be his adoptive parent?
Then he gets married in Alves in 1919. What was his age according to the marriage certificate, and what were the names of his parents? This last seems to me to be essential information, because even if you did find a birth of Thomas Keil(l) or Thomas Reid in Glasgow in 1890-1891, how could you be sure it was the right Thomas Keil(l)?
Did he die in Scotland? If so, do the names of his parents on the death certificate match those on his marriage certificate? Because if not they might provide a clue.

A marriage of Thomas Keill and McCook in 1919 comes up in a free search on ScotlandsPeople. If you pay to access that certificate it will tell you who his parents were, his age as he stated, where he lived at the time and his occupation. That will help you pinpoint him in the 1911 census.

There is a death Thomas Reid Keill 1962 Larbert Stirling , born c1891.
This death would be viewable on SP.

Thanks to all for help.
We have used marriage cert" to lead to the fact that Thomas Keilll was serving with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was in France in 1915. Still cant find him on 1911 census. He listed his adoptive father on the marriage document but called him Frank Alexander Keill. This is the only record we can find that has this and not just Alexander only.
Anyway we have a lot more information than we had at 7.00 am. this morning. Thanks again.

Followed advice and looked at death certificate on ScotlandsPeople. Found more info than I expected as am more used to English records! I have discovered Thomas Keill formerly known as Reid died in 1962, His parents are given as Charles Reid spirit salesman and Elizabeth Neilson, housekeeper.
Now all I have to do is track them down!

The National Archives website has a medal card for Thomas Keill S/3348 Private Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders , Acting Serjeant.
There wont be much information on this card , just medals awarded.

Another thought , if it is your man his army number is quite low , it may be he signed up before 1914.

I have discovered Thomas Keill formerly known as Reid died in 1962, His parents are given as Charles Reid spirit salesman and Elizabeth Neilson, housekeeper.
Does it say "Elizabeth Reid M S Neilson" or just "Elizabeth Neilson"? Because if it is the latter, that means that Charles Reid was not married to Elizabeth Neilson, so the birth could be indexed as Neilson.
