Please could anyone help in my search, I am trying to find the grave of Annie Smith . She was a patient of Bexley Hospital from 1927 until her death on 7th May 1944. I have been unable to find her resting place. Any information would be gratefully received.

Hi Val
If your lady died in Bexley Hospital, might she have been buried in Bexley Cemetery? Have you tried Bexley council?

Hi Val,
I might be wrong but having lived in the area and in fact gone to primary school opposite the old Bexley Hospital before it shut down, I would guess that either she was buried at St Mary's Church Bexley, or as it was very close to the border of Dartford (in fact it was next to Dartford Heath) she may have been buried or cremated in the Dartford area. I don't think there is a crematorium in Bexley from memory.
Hope this is of some help

Hi Val,
Eltham Cemetery, which does indeed contain the nearest crematorium for Bexley, comes under the responsibility of Greenwich Council. Contact details can be found here:

Hi Val,
If you dont find that Eltham is the right place then try Dartford, as certainly by the early 60's the hospital was actually in the Dartford catchment area not Bexley, and the records may be with that authority, not Bexley.
Best wishes

Found this site on google, there are one or two good pictures of Bexley Hospial, inside and out. My Aunt died there in 1987 and i well remember visiting her there. Very depressing place.

I agree with Bumblemum, Bexley Hospital was a very depressing place. My grandad died there, but was taken home for burial.
The cemetary next to the A2 is Falconwood, and that's where grandad was taken, but that's because his widow and family lived close by, and it was their 'local' cemetary.
However, it'd still be worth you having a look there.

Did you manage to locate her? I am going to Eltham Cem tomorrow if you want me to have a look there. Let me know

I realise that it is quite a few years since the request for help to discover the burial place of Annie Smith who died at Bexley Hopsital on 7th May 1944. My relative Dora Carruthers also died on that day in Bexley Hospital and I was hoping Annie's burial site was found and this may help in my journey in discovering Dora's final resting place

Dear AWT and Val, did either of you have any luck with the Bexley Hospital burial for 1944?
My mums aunt, Beatrice Tuppenney died there in Sept 1945, and I have no idea where she is buried. I am begging to think that she may have been living there for several years and would like to trace the records. Any ideas?
-
Joan, I dont know if it is anyhelp, but I beleive that the London Metropolitan Archives holds most of the records for Bexley Hospital now. I know I wrote to them regarding one of my rellies who died there in 1924 and they had them. But you have to ask the LMA to do the research as they are not available for viewing by even members of the family. If you send them an email with the details they have then they will tell you if they have the records. No doubt if you get the records then it should say whether, as in my own case, the family arranged for a burial local to them or whether Bexley Hospital arranged the same.
Good luck in your research

Hi I am sure they used to be a cemetery in the far left hand corner of the premier of the grounds of the hospital looking from the back try looking at old maps of Bexley hospital.
I did try to download a map but the attachment is too large, I do believe that st Barnabas Church has been built on top of the cemetery maybe you could try contacting them
I hope this helps

Thank you Markemark I will have a look at an old map. It may have been that he was taken home to Plumstead but I'm drawing a blank there at the moment ;)

Hi
There is definitely a small graveyard there although it is now overgrown. The Parish Church of Saint Barnabas Joydens Wood is right on the same site. it's in the South West corner of the site near the junction of Baldwyn's Park and Tile Kiln Lane.
I went there a few years ago with a friend who was trying to trace a relative who'd died at the hospital. From memory some of the graves are marked with numbers
