Title: Looking for Daniel Samuel Hunt a 'Sea Captain'
Post by: BonnieDownUnder on Friday 05 April 13 21:31 BST (UK)
Hello,
Daniel Samuel Hunt, a 'Sea Captain', when and where born unknown.  A possible marriage is to a Sarah Jane Brandon Q3/1874 7a/974 Caistor, Lancs.,

I believe their daughter was Mary Emmett/Emmitt HUNT was born 1878 Caistor, Lincs.

On 05 Dec 1897 Mary married (age shown as 21 but if above is correct, she was 19) William Henry Joseph Garrard at St Barnabas, Rotherhithe, Surrey and her brother Samuel Daniel Hunter married in the same church in 1900.  They were witnesses at each other nuptials and both showed their father to be Daniel Samuel Hunt a 'Sea Captain'

What I have been unable to locate is Daniel, his (possible) wife Sarah Jane nor the above with any other possibly siblings on C1881 or 1891 though I have tracked daughter Mary (person I am interested in) on subsequent census and previous thread on Roots Chat.

Any assistance much appreciated, locating census records and birth of DSH and marriage, thanks.

Unfortunately, Surnames beginning with the letter "H" are not on the on line index for Lloyd's Captains Register. This register can be viewed at London Metropolitan Archives. There is also an index of Captains 1845 - 1854 in the series BT114 at the national archives. Also BT127 may be of help
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C3165
I understand copies of certificates of service and competency are available on Ancestry.com.
He could have been Captain/Skipper of a fishing boat. If so you need to look at the series BT138 at Kew.

He probably owned or skippered a fishing vessel and thought Sea Captain sounded better.

Hello Keyboard ... oh, so terribly sad ... I just can't imagine the grief that Sarah Jane would have felt loosing three sons ... War is such a terrible waste of young lives and sadly it is still happening as I write this message, with the lost of so many innocent children too

Thanks seaweed for your links to the national archives

... and to everyone, thanks for your amazing assistance and lets all take a moment to remember that we sleep well and safe because of those who made the ultimate sacrifice

Thanks once again Keyboard86 for all the fantastic information;  I am slowly sifting through all your finds and collating it onto the family tree.  I had come upon Sarah's marriage to Mr. Smith and I am a little perplexed that she shows her father's name as William Jackson ? maybe he was William Jackson Brandon ... another avenue to follow up.

Thanks also to Barleymow for marriage record Hunt/Brandon, appreciated.

I will all track down all of Sarah Jane's sons military records.  Also to establish when she was born.  According to marriage record she claimed to have been 18 years of age but census records give a calculation of 15 years except for last one in 1911 which would (nearly) agree with age at marriage.

Thanks again. Bonnie

Hi again Bonnie, why did she marry under her supposed maiden name, what is the Jones part in her middle name, why the Hunt surname crossed out re William Jackson (So many questions)!

Title: Re: Looking for Daniel Samuel Hunt a 'Sea Captain'
Post by: BonnieDownUnder on Sunday 07 April 13 21:05 BST (UK)
Keyboard86 ... yes, it is strange that Sarah Jane Hunt married under her (supposedly) maiden name of Brandon and not her previous married name of Hunt.

I still haven't been able to find when she was born.  Indications on census records give it as Rotherhithe.

On the 1891 census, a George Brandon (shown as nephew) aged 9 years, born Grimsby, Lincs., is living with her and her children in London.  Try as I might, I haven't been able to find his birth registration nor him on any subsequent census.  My thoughts were if I could locate his father, then I might be able to find him in conjunction with Sarah on C1861 or 1871

Sarah & Daniel's first born child, Mary in 1878, middle name was Emmett or Emmitt and again thought that this could be a lead to tracking down Sarah's parents but again, a dead end.  Bonnie

Hi Keyboard86 ... thanks for info and to add to this, he unfortunately didn't make it onto the 1881 census nor can I find a baptismal record.

I have found a marriage registration for Stephen Hunt Q2/1849 5/367 Lewisham however there is no match for the bride, Matilda.  With help on this site searching the Birth register, it seems pretty certain her name was MATILDA WOOTTEN and have located her on C1841 census with parents and siblings.  To ensure its a 100% certainty, will purchase the certificate.

Still working to find Sarah Jane Brandon and feel there is a clue with the name Emmett or Emmitt
Thanks again Bonnie

Gosh Keyboard, you just amaze me ... I have spent so long looking at census records and didn't come close ... thank you so much.

So the upshot is that a Mary ? married a Mr. Jones and in 1851 living at Norwich with children John, Mary A. and George.  By 1861 she is a widow and remarried ?? to William Brandon and living at Greenwich with her children Mary and George now having the surname Brandon;  whether Sarah Jane born in 1856 (or thereabouts) is Mr. Jones or Mr. Brandon's child is to checked out but now know where the 'Jones' came from on her marriage record.  I have located a birth registration of a Sarah Jane Jones Q3/1855 1d/536 at Greenwich which is a possibility.

In 1871 Mary Jones / Brandon is once again a widow and with her is son John Jones now Brandon, Sarah Jane aged 15, and a Susan aged 10.

As a guess, I think that Mary's surname may have been Emmett or Emmitt;  as previously advised, that is the middle name that Mary's daughter, Sarah Jane, gave to her daughter Mary

Thanks again ... just fantastic.  Bonnie

Hello Keyboard86 ... Going on the baptismal records you found under the name BRANDRAM (which I have sighted) it looks to me like Sarah was born August of 1856.  I found a Sarah Ann Brandon birth registered Q3/1856 1d/469 at Rotherhithe.  On all census records, Sarah showed that this is where she was born so will go ahead with the purchase of the certificate.

Hi BonnieDownunder,
Out of interest have you found anything further on Daniel Samuel Hunt the 'Sea Captain'.  Recently researching name (not FH) and found article Trove newspapers listing which may help?
.....The Daily News (Perth, WA : 1882 - 1950), Thursday 21 July 1949, page 5  a request from a Mrs Mary Murray of Glasgow trying to trace her relatives who came to WA 'some years ago' looking for children of retired sea captain Daniel Samuel Hunt who moved to Perth; children names Amy, Maude, Decima, Deborah, Janet, Sam, Dan. Mrs Amy Williams of Cannington last known contact.
The father of these children is buried in Perth with registered wife Janet (20yrs his junior) and registered mother of children.  Janet and Daniel Snr married in 1900 but there were registered children prior.

Hi Bonny,
I am trying to get in touch with you in regards to Daniel Samuel Hunt Sea Captain. He was actually my great grandfather on my father's side. He came to and remarried Pinjarra, Western Australia in about 1901 to my great grand mother Janet Marr and she was from Scotland. I think you would be very interested in what genealogical information my dad has regarding this side of the Hunt family. Daniel Samuel was from Poplar, London, UK.

If you are interested in getting in touch with my father his name is Mr Mervyn Hunt we come from Glen Forrest, Western Australia. I would really love to hear from you regarding our interest in the same family.

Hi Alethea,

It seems that your great grandmother Janet Marr was the younger sister of my great grandmother Helen Marr, who was born in Scotland in 1859. I would be very interested in any information you or your father could share with me regarding the Marr family, and I'd be happy to offer you anything I have, too.

I think their father Robert McGregor Marr (our great great grandfather) may also have visited Australia in 1902 or thereabouts, with his children James and Margaret. I've managed to trace Janet's arrival in Perth to 1892, when she left Scotland on the SS Echuca as one of a group of female immigrants bound for the colony. I'm sure there is much more to be told!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Jamkid,

My dad would greatly appreciate any information to this side of the Hunt family. It is very exciting to know we have distant relatives to the Scottish side of the family. There is no way of me sending you a more personal message.

If you could search my family address to Glen Forrest, Western Australia we are in the phone book under M and JC Hunt.

Look me up at my place of work in Tuart Hill, WA. I work at Tuart College Library as a Library Technician.

Welcome to you both! :)

If the two of you each place another message or two on this thread, you'll be able to use the PM (personal message) system. The system isn't fully available until you have made 2 (perhaps 3) posts on the board.  If a person had made only 1 post, you may be able to send them a message ... but they won't be able to reply.  :-\

Hi,

To those who may be interested in Daniel Samuel Hunt and his family, I am posting a summary of the information made available by his descendants in Perth, Western Australia.

Daniel Samuel HUNT was the 3rd child of Stephen HUNT (1825-1880) and Matilda WOOTTEN (1829-1864). They married on 23 June 1849 at St Luke's Church in Charlton, Kent, England and later moved to Poplar. Their children were: Stephen William HUNT b. 18 Aug 1849  d. 23 Sept 1925; Matilda Emma Eldridge HUNT b.28 May 1851 d. after 1932; Daniel Samuel HUNT b.7 July 1853 d. 6 June 1924; Samuel Charles HUNT b. 11 June 1857  d. 24 March 1878; Charles Henry HUNT b. 26 Aug 1860  d. 16 Feb 1925; Mary Anne HUNT b. 6 Sept 1862  d. 28 Aug 1932.

Daniel Samuel HUNT married Sarah Jane BRANDON on 18 Aug 1875 in Caistor, Lincolnshire. They went on to have a large family:

1.  Daniel Samuel HUNT b.14 Sept 1875 Caistor, Lincolnshire  d. 25 May 1876 aged 1 year.

2.  Mary Emmitt HUNT b.13 March 1878 Caistor, Lincolnshire  m. (1) William Joseph Henry GERRARD 5 Dec 1897 (2) Oliver James SEARL 29 April 1923

8.  Alfred HUNT b.4 Dec 1890  d. 1 July 1917 in France

Daniel Samuel HUNT left his family in Lincolnshire and went missing sometime between 1890 and 1892, and was believed to be lost at sea. His wife Sarah, with seven children to support, and believing herself to be a widow, married Arthur Frederick SMITH on 17 Feb 1892 at All Saints in  Walworth,  Surry. They went on to have two sons, Arthur Frederick SMITH and George Charles Ronald SMITH.

Meanwhile, Daniel made his way to Western Australia around 1896, and remarried Janet MARR in Perth. Janet (b. 26 July 1873) was some 20 years his junior, and had emigrated to Perth in 1892 from Islay in Scotland. They married on 1 Nov 1900 at St John's Church in Pinjarra, Western Australia.

They had the following children:

1. Katie Maud HUNT b.8 March 1897 in Pinjarra, Western Australia  d. 7 Aug 1974 in Claremont, W.A.

2. Elizabeth Debra HUNT b. 21 Feb 1899 in Pinjarra  d. 3 Aug 1984

3. Daniel Samuel HUNT b. 9 Aug 1901 in Pinjarra  d. 2 July 1984

4. Decima Amelia HUNT b. 17 Aug 1903 in West Murray W. A. d. 16  July 1998

5. Janet HUNT b. 7 Dec 1904 in West Murray  d. 28 June 1966

6. Samuel Daniel HUNT b. 5 April 1906 in West Murray d. 1 July 1984

7. Victor HUNT b. 21 May 1908  d. 9 Dec 1996

Daniel Samuel HUNT died in Guildford W. A. on 6 June 1924.  His wife Janet MARR had died some nine years earlier, on 11 Oct 1915 at the Wireless Hill Station in Applecross.

Janet MARR was the daughter of Robert McGregor MARR, a cooper from Glasgow, Scotland (1833-1907), and Janet HART (1837-1894), who was born in Essequibo, British Guiana, when her parents were there as part of a Scottish labouring force in 1837.

If anyone wishes to learn more details about any of the people mentioned here, please contact me and I'll be happy to help!

Hi Jamkid,

Am interested in any information about the Hunt family from when he married Janet Marr and moved to Pinjarra.

I think my grandmother was Janet Hunt born 7 December 1904 (but she died about 1976, not 1966).

Any further details appreciated. We only knew of one brother, Daniel Samuel.

cheers,
Huntfam

Hi Huntfam,

How nice to hear from you!

I have only a little bit more information about Janet Hunt to share with you.

She was baptised on 4 November 1906 in Pinjarra. I have the date of her death as 26 June 1981 in Bicton, WA.

I have reference to her marriage to Hubert Ward on 30 April 1924 in Beverley, and there’s a newspaper article describing the event in the “Bruce Rock Post and Corrigin and Narembeen Guardian” of 23 May 1924. I can send you a copy if you like.

Janet was one of a large family of siblings, as already outlined, and much of the information I have about the Hunt family has come from the son of one of Janet’s brothers, Samuel Daniel Hunt. He is living in Perth and I’m sure he would be delighted to get in touch with you.

Perhaps if you make another post we could message one another privately?

I believe there was a breakdown in the relationship between your grandmother’s parents, and her mother died on 1915 when Janet was very young. This may explain why you are not aware of all members of the extended family. I’d love to know any other details of Janet’s life that you could share.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Jamkid,
Yes, I'd love a copy of that clipping.
Janet was only 73 or 74 when she died, so that's around 1977/78.
We think she was put into foster care/adopted and did not return to her mother. Don't know who this foster family was.
So there was a big chasm and Janet seemed pretty cut off from the rest of the family. I think she went to a few family gatherings later on, but details are non-existent, apart from a mention of Daniel Hunt, who offered her travel opportunities.
Will see if I can send a PM after this post.
cheers!
Huntfam

Hi everyone,
I just came across this post by chance, I hope you don't mind me joining in. Janet Hunt (nee Marr) was my great great grandmother.  Shortly after she arrived in Australia and before she met Daniel Samuel, Janet gave birth to my great grandmother Amy (July 1892) Amy’s father is listed on her birth certificate as Thomas Watson.  It was the belief of Amy that her mother was sent to Australia because she was pregnant and unmarried.  I haven’t verified the dates that Janet left Scotland and arrived in Australia so I’m not sure if that is true or if she could have possibly fallen pregnant on the way.  There is also a birth record for a girl called Margaretta born to Janet Marr & Canello Petunis in 1895 but she then seems to have evaporated as I can find no trace of her after that.
Amy had three children, Stephen, Stella & my grandmother who was also named Amy. None of the three have a father listed on their birth certificate and Amy snr never told them who he was or if it was the same father for all of them.   My grandmother had a warm relationship with her ‘uncle’ Samuel Daniel Hunt & he told her that he and some of his siblings were certain that their father Daniel Samuel Hunt had also fathered Amy Snr’s children including my grandmother but they couldn’t prove it.  My family has never understood what Amy snr was doing in Esperance when my great aunt and grand mother were born (its approx 720km from Perth) but I now know that she was with Daniel Samuel Hunt and he in fact registered both of their births - not that it proves anything, we will never know.   My great uncle was born in 2011 in Fremantle, my great aunt was born in 1914 & My grand mother in 1915, just two months after Janet passed away in Perth.
I would love to learn more about this side of the family and connect with some distant relatives to share information!  If anyone knows the dates that Janet was in transit between Scotland & Australia could you please let me know?
Thanks :)

Hi Jodie,

My great great grandmother was Janet Marr’s older sister, and I have been researching Janet’s life as part of my family history.

Janet left London on 16 February 1892, sailing on the SS Echuca. Her trip was arranged by the United British Women’s Emigration Association and she travelled with a group of female emigrants destined for Fremantle. She arrived on 30 March 1892 and found immediate employment as a domestic servant with Mrs Wolff of Perth.

This arrangement was likely to have been over quite quickly if she had her daughter Amy in June ( the record I have seen gives Amy’s birthdate as 10 July).

Given the dates, it seems likely that Janet was pregnant before leaving Scotland, although I’m not sure how far in advance the arrangements were made, and how long she stayed in London before travelling.

If you would like to make another post I can try to send you a personal message with my email details so that we can swap notes!

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

It would be lovely to hear from you!

I’ve just checked and you are spot on - Amy’s birthdate is 10th July 1892.  Janet’s first work arrangement in Perth must have been over quickly!

Hopefully this message allows you to send me a personal message. Let me know if not & I will try again.

Thanks :)
Jodie.

Hi Jodie,

I think we need another post to activate the personal message feature. How about replying to this and we can try again.

So glad we are both talking about the same people!

Cheers,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
Sorry about the slow response, I didn’t get an email notification from the last message or perhaps it went to my junk mail. Hopefully this message will allow us to personal message :)
Cheers,
Jodie.

Hi everyone!

I discovered this group while searching for info on Janet Marr who was my great great grandmother - I have struck gold! Have been trying for some time to find extra information about my grandmother's family - so thank you. Dancuz12 - I believe we are cousins - my grandmother is Stella Perkins (nee Marr) your grandmother's sister. Is there some way I can contact you and swap info on the family in WA - are you in Perth? Thanks everyone for the info - you have made my day! - Ros.
