Where did your Frederick end up ?

Marriage records in most counties includes at least father's name which can help. Sometimes death certs hold similar details on parents. Also if census are available these can give place of birth. His birth was before the start of civil, records so a search for a baptism would be required. You would usually need to know the denomination of your Clarkes and also where they lived - i.e. the name of the town, townland or parish.

Thank you for the reply. He ended up in Canada after being in London for a while.

Did he have any children born in England ?

A birth cert for one of them would give you his wife's name and might help you locate a marriage in England, or Ireland which in turn would give you his father's name and possibly other useful clues...

Would this be Frederick Leon Clarke, who died 1932 in Vancouver?
Born 1853.
Celebrated gymnast, with Tom Ethardo, known as Ethardo & St Leon?

If so, the 1901 and 1911 census of Canada states he was born in England!

He married Margaret Hatherly and they had 9 children, one of which was my grandfather Herman Edward Clarke.

Where were their children born - Ireland or England ?

I'd start with a search for the marriage, and the location of the birth of the eldest child is often a good place to start..

Lots of trees on Ancestry - mostly documented properly!
Also obituaries, census samples, photos, etc.

Children born in Leamington Spa up to 1894.
Those born 1896 onwards born in Canada.

Hi I can help you with some information, he was my great grandfather, my grandfather was Cyril Clarke.  He was born in England as per the census in Warwickshire, Emscott.  He was married to Margaret and they had 16 children in total (although not all survived to adulthood). They moved to Canada after his brother somehow got access to his bank account and stole all of his money.  He was a circus performer, a trapeze artist and a clown and did a command performance for queen Victoria.  Margaret's family (father Thomas Hatherley) had moved to Canada already so they followed, they travelled across Canada to Salmon Arm where Thomas and Margaret's brother James had been the first settlers in the area.  They didn't stay long and then moved to Chilliwack to stay with her sisters there.  Then they moved to Vancouver and started the first Refreshment Pavilion in Stanley park.
If you're interested I have photos and more information that I've researched.
