Title: carno shop & Twyncurno Shop rhymney
Post by: Avril-14 on Sunday 14 April 13 23:07 BST (UK)
Hello there folks
Israel Jones and his wife Martha owned the above shops.
in 1901 census it is 53 Twyncurno Shop Rhymney
in 1911 census it is Carno Shop Rhymney.

Israel is a relation to my late grandfather. I would just like to know if there are any photos of these shops or where abouts in Rhymney were they or does anyone have anymore information on them.
Israel and Martha didn't appear to have any children. So that is the end of that line.
Cheers
Avril

In 1901 - they are the only entries on the image but if you go to the page before - the address was Upper High St so it was perhaps in that vicinity

There is a Carno Street in Rhymney which runs onto Upper High Street.  You can view this on google street view (just google Carno Street Rhymney).  However the area has changed greatly since 1911, as the street view will show you.  I live locally so will have a look in the local library and see if any of the "Rhymney Yesterday" books have any pictures of the shop or area.

Hi there Ray
Thanks that information. I have managed to google the street like you suggested but goodness only knows why it doesn't give a street view.  Though I have looked at some of the houses etc that are there now and like you say, they have changed. Any more information that you can get will be gratefully received.
I was actually born in Lady Tyler Terrace quite a  long time ago now. Some more of my family on my fathers side came from Pontlottyn.
Many thanks for your help.
Avril :)  :)

Have managed to find a photo of Carno Shop but I am not sure what the date of this picture is.  Apparently Carno Shop used to be a company shop for the Rhymney Iron Company.

And it is funny that you should mention Lady Tyler Terrace because I read in a local history book that there was a group of house built behind Lady Tyler Terrace called New Zealand Houses and I see from your profile that you are in NZ.

Avril

Not sure if you are aware but if you place your mouse over the photo of the Carno Shop, do a right click and from the list click on "open image in new tab" this will give a full page view of the Shop on a new tab.

You could also save the image to your own files.

Have pm'd you.

Have managed to photograph the grave.  The writing is not in very good order and I have tried to tidy up the photograph but is still not very readable.  However the inscription reads:

                               In Loving Memory of
                                  ISRAEL JONES
                          Beloved husband of Martha Jones
                               Carno Shop Rhymney
                         Who died Feb 20 1931
                                  aged 70 years

Also of the above Martha Jones
who died Dec 12 1938 age 72 years
(welsh inscription very difficult to read)

The grave yard is very pretty and  well maintained with views across the mountains from Israel & Martha's grave.

Have had to reduce the size of the photo significantly to post it.  If you pm me your email address I will send the photo's of the whole stone and of the graveyard.

Hi Avril, just joined today,if you are looking for Carno Shop on google maps ,you need to go up upper high st,turn left at at carno street, carno shop is on your right, converted to a white private house. I have lived in Rhymney all my 74yrs,twice living in Lady Tyler. Spent a lot of my childhood playing around the New Zealand houses.
