Title: William and Edith Alexander deaths - Manitoba
Post by: EdCan on Sunday 21 April 13 15:48 BST (UK)
Is there anyway to find these deaths which I think probably occurred in Winnipeg after 1940. I have found them living in Winnipeg in 1901/1906/1911 and 1916 census. They do not show up in the Manitoba  vital stats. Both were born Ontario 1873/74.William born William Thomas and Edith was Edith Mertia nee Beamer.

Thanks - interesting that a man convicted of fraud is a "Memorable Manitoban". Now I have to wonder if Edith divorced him and remarried since he spent the last 10 yrs of his life living in a hotel.

From the Monday, 28 Sep 1925 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press (first paragraph only):

An exceedingly pretty autumn house wedding took place at 2:15 Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas Alexander when their only daughter, Beatrice Marion, became the bride of Mr. John Leslie Sugden. The spacious hallway and reception rooms were adorned with fall flowers and ferns. The ceremony took place in the reception room where the fireplace was banked with graceful ferns, palms and flame gladioli. Miss Eileen Motley played appropriate music during the assembling of the guests and prefaced and concluded the ceremony with the bridal marches. Miss Phyllis Wilson sang Schumann's "Dedication" during the signing of the register.

Obituary for William Thomas Alexander in the 5 Jan 1943 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press:

William Thomas Alexander, 68, one time president of the Great West Permanent Loan company, died in Winnipeg General hospital Tuesday. Born in Ontario, he came to Manitoba a little over 40 years ago and took up farming in Stonewall district. Then he came to the city and entered the financial life of the community. For 15 years he also interested himself in the real estate business, turning his attention principally to farm lands. His wife pre-deceased him several years ago. At one time he was president of the Great West Permanent Loan company, the Imperial Canadian Trust company and the Canadian National Fire Insurance company. The Great West Permanent Loan company and the Imperial Canadian Trust company, of which companies W. T. Alexander was  resident, went into liquidation in the fall of 1927, with the National Trust company as liquidator. Following this, charges were laid against both W. T. Alexander and his brother. F. H. Alexander, on a general charge that they conspired to defraud the companies. Trial followed and both were found guilty and sentenced to the penitentiary. The funeral service will be held at Thomson's funeral home at 2 o'clock Wednesday and the burial will take place at Stonewall at 11 o'clock Thursday morning. For the past 10 years Mr. Alexander has resided at the Marlborough hotel.

The Manitoba Vital Stats genealogy database has a birth for Beatrice Marion Irene Alexander in Winnipeg on 23 Apr 1900 and Lyall English Argylle Alexander on 4 Jan 1904.

In the Ontario marriages at Ancestry:

W F Alexander, 24, born Ancaster, Ontario, son of Matthew Alexander and Mary English married Edith M Beamer, 26, daughter of Andrew C Beamer and Susan Muir on 29 May 1899 in Grimsby, Lincoln County, Ontario.

From the 5 Oct 1973 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press:

LT. COLONEL J. LESLIE SUGDEN, O.B.E.
Passed away on October 2, 1973, at Deer Lodge Hospital, after a lengthy illness, J. Leslie Sugden, aged 84 years, beloved husband of Beatrice Sugden of 364 Queenston St. Funeral service will be held 2:15 p.m. Friday, October 5, at the Gardiner Funeral Home, 178 Kennedy Street at York, the Rev. Donald E. Pratt officiating, with interment to follow in Garry Memorial Park.- Courtesy parking is available next to the funeral home. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart Fund or the charity of their choice.

It appears Beatrice Marion (Alexander) Sugden died in late December 1996 however I can't access her obituary at the moment. From what I can see in the search results however indicates that her mother's name was Edith Mertie, not Mertia.

Here is a link to the obituary for the husband of the daughter of Beatrice (Alexander) Sugden:

Thanks Jacquie

Had the BC info . Edith is the problem. I think she probably died in Manitoba but under what name? Too bad William's obit did not say who he was survived by although I doubt that Edith would have been mentioned if she had divorced him and remarried.

Do you have proof that she was alive after his death? His obituary says his wife predeceased him. If they were divorced it would likely not mention her at all. They had children including one living in Winnipeg so it seems unlikely a write-up would say she was dead if she wasn't.

Missed that wife predeceased him when reading obit. Rechecked vital stats and she does not show up. Assume stats are current to at least 1940 given 70 yr cut off.
