Title: Kidd family-Scarborough; Anyone know about them?
Post by: Stanwix England on Sunday 05 May 13 22:20 BST (UK)
I've found a family with the surname Kidd in my family tree, on my paternal Grandmothers side through my own research.

My Grandmother was told a rumour that we were related to the infamous http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kidd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kidd) Captain Kidd.

Now I think it's probably just a rumour, especially given this family appears to be based in Scarborough and he was Scottish! However I would love to hear from other Kidd descendents to find out what they know about the Scarborough Kidds.

My Kidd line is

George Kidd (born around 1780 in Scarborough)
George Kidd (1803-1876 Scarborough) m Mary Salton
Marshall Salton Kidd (1823-1900) m Mary
Elizabeth Hannah Kidd (1853-1918)

Would love to hear from other Kidds.

Hi - although I've not found any Scarborough Kidds in my family I do have Yorkshire ones, the earliest I've found being born c.1726 in Knaresborough. Their descendants lived in Pannal, Harrogate, then by 1851 they were living in York.

Briefly my lot are as follows:-

John Kidd b.1726 Knaresborough, married Sarah Moor
Thomas Kidd b.1756  Knaresborough d.1823 Pannal, Harrogate, married Sarah Hall
Reuben Kidd b.1799 Pannal, Harrogate, married Amelia ?
Thomas Kidd b.1824 Pannal, Harrogate, married Marry Dunning, died in York
Reuben George Kidd b.1872 York, d.1955

Regards,
Maggie

No problem. With regards to Captain Kidd. I live in the house that was their shop and there was rumour of Captain Kidd coming from here, but it is only rumour. Many people have looked for the connection as the gentleman that lived here was William Alfred Kidd, grocer and pleasureboat owner, but the boat connection ends there sadly, he is not Captain Kidd just the same name.

Sorry you'll have to ask someone a bit more technically minded then me! ;D

Thank you for your information. I've always thought the Captain Kidd story sounded a bit far fetched and I'd never felt much like a pirate anyway  :P ;)

Hi

I have just come across your post and noticed the name Marshall Salton Kidd, my ancestor was Marshall Salton.  I think Mary Salton who married George Kidd was Marshall's daughter.  I assumed that she died in infancy but now I have found her.

many thanks

Hi
Yes, I do!

My maternal great-grandfather was William Marshall Kidd. I have a family bible which lists many Kidds. He had a coal merchants and was based in Scarborough at 40 St.John's Road, and a boarding house at the same address.

I'm related to: Mary Elizabeth Kidd (wife of the above. My great-grandmother)
Lawrence Kidd (their son)
Agnes Evelyn Kidd (their daughter, my grandmother)
Elsie Kidd (their youngest daughter)
There's a John Salton Kidd who was the son of Jane Kidd who married Richard Kidd. Jane was born in Salton (or Salton may have been her maiden name)
Hannah Kidd (sister of William Marshall Kidd)

Many years ago, in the sixties, my grandmother was visited by a distant cousin who was living in Florida. She was very interested in her family history and passed on a lot of her researchI have this information also (somewhere!)

I'm in Singapore at the moment and the bible is in the UK. I'll be returning in the next few days. I'll get back to you with more information.

Hi, re the Kidd family,
My grandmother was, Agnes Evelyn Kidd (1896-1981). Her father was William Marshall Kidd (1865-1944) born Scarborough, North Yorkshire. A Coal merchant. In relation to captain Kidd, I believe he only had two daughters….possibly stepdaughters.
