Title: Help tracing 3 sisters in British Columbia please
Post by: prodda on Monday 13 May 13 16:35 BST (UK)
Hi all

My grandmothers parents died in 1899/1900 in London and their 10 children became separated in the following years. I had managed to gain information on 7 of the children but the whereabouts of three of the girls remained a mystery.

I have recently come across some old family photos and it appears as though they emigrated to Canada. The youngest of the three Greta Garrett WEBB (born Dec 1890 London) married Alec Puttick (an Englishman) in Washington State in 1925 and they moved back to British Columbia until their deaths. Greta's death certificate is signed by her son in law (FERGUSON) therefore I assume Greta had children.

I have nothing on Sylvia Frederica WEBB (born 1887 London) or Davis (female) WEBB (born London early December 1890) except for a photo of Sylvia & my dad (who was in the Royal Navy) taken in Vancouver in 1943. I also have a photo of my dad in Vancouver with Aunt Beatrice in 1943 but I have no idea who she might be unless it is Davis known by another name?

I am an Ancestry UK member and can see that all 3 of the girls travelled from Liverpool to Montreal/Quebec but don't have access Ancestry.com to see the details (dates/vessels etc) so don't know if they all travelled together. Greta is in the UK 1911 census so I assume they left England shortly after that.

Any info at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Phil

Hi,

The witnesses on Greta`s marriage certificate are Sylvia F Edgar and a T or J? Edgar, so it looks likely that Sylvia married an Edgar.

Are you sure about the birthdate of Davis? You have her born early December 1890 - but you also have Greta born in December 1890. Do you have the official birth reg for Davis?

Guys - thanks for all the fantastic info and so quickly :) it is greatly appreciated.

Sami - all I have for Davis is that her birth was registered in Q3 1890. Ancestry.co.uk states that she and her brother were residing with their uncle in the 1991 census. However, I've had a very close look at the actual image and the name Davis could actually be Doris (which is the middle name of my grandmother Evelyn) so I may have led you down the garden path on that - sorry.

Canada Voters list for Kitchener Street Vancouver East 1949 - shows :-

A S Puttick (retired), Mrs A S Puttick and also a female, spinster with the initial "B" - could be the person you referred to in the photo but she wouldn't be an Aunt but niece to your father.  ??? Occupation was stenographer.

Thanks Sandra - I think the spinster with the initial "B" is Betty who I believe was their daughter. From the photo I have of Beatrice she looks to be a similar age to Greta. Thanks for all your help.

Have you tried looking at http://www.canada411.ca/   for the son-in-law in Burnaby. British Columbia. Address was given on death cert of Greta Puttick.

There was someone of that name listed on the Canada Voters List (in the 1960's 1970's) with a wife of the name you mentioned living on Ewart Street. Burnaby, the name is still listed at an address in that Street.

hello Phil,  I have just become interested in finding information about my ancestry, and came across your posts  about Gordon Webb (my great uncle),  and your question about Greta Webb and 2 of her sisters.   My grandmothers name was Greta Garrett Webb.  She married Alec Puttick. They had 1 daughter... Elizabeth Greta Puttick... she is my Mom... now 87 years old.   She is known as Betty.   Betty is married to Tom Ferguson... my Dad.   My name is Joan (I am now 61 years old), and I have one brother.. David.  We all live in Vancouver,  British Columbia.   I  did not ever meet my Grandmothers sister Sylvia.  I know she lived here in Vancouver, and we have some things with her name on them.   The younger sister Beatrice was well known to us as we grew up.  She never married.  When the family split up, Beatrice ended up in a Catholic orphanage, but later came to Canada.  My Aunty Beatty...as we called her was always included in our family events, she was a little bit blind and a little bit deaf.   Uncle Gordon.. my grandmother`s brother from Argentina visited  Greta in Vancouver  at least twice in his elder years.  He was fun... tried to teach us some Spanish.   I`m going to ask my Mom what else she can remember about him!  I  would love to know as much as possible about  all of my Grandmother Gretà`s  siblings, their lives and their descendants !

To Prodda... Phil...  just thinking...  was  your  grandmother a sister of my grandmother??  What was your grandmother's name ?
Does this mean that  your mother (or father),  is  a  cousin of my mother ?
Joan
