Post by: Dannemois on Tuesday 14 May 13 16:30 BST (UK)
Hi
On the 1901 census (UK) Mary Kavanagh is listed as aged 23, born c.1878, Co Kilkenny.  No other info; I am clutching at straws here but I wonder if some kind person could locate any details of her.  Appreciate any details, regards, Roy

Where is mary living in 1901 census - is she married or single? Very difficult to source further information without more detail which I understand you dont seem to have.  Where is Mary in 1911 census?

Hello,

my questions already asked but Family Search carries Irish BMD indexes and there are a couple of Marys around that time.
Did she marry? Are there other Kavanaghs around her that may help with finding more info?

regards
heywood

On the 1911 census, her birthplace reads Kilniacow? at least that is what it looks like where as the 1901 list her birthplace as Co Kilkenny.  No other info; unable to find when she came to UK.  Sorry

Do you mean she's in England, Scotland or Wales in 1911? (Ireland was part of the U.K. and no records were kept of people travelling betwwen Ireland at the rest of the U.K.)

I think the birthplace is probably Kilmacow, which is in south Kilkenny.  If you are looking for a birth reference on FamilySearch.org in order to obtain a civil birth cert you will need to put in Waterford as the birth place since that is the registration district for Kilmacow (the town is near the Kilkenny/Waterford border).  If Mary Kavanagh was Roman Catholic you could try the rootsireland.ie pay site.  The Kilkenny records on the site include Kilmacow RC ones and there is a baptismal record for a Mary Kavanagh in 1878.  You'll need to pay to get the details, however.

Family Search has this for a Mary born Kilmacow

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR3T-8HF
www.nationalarchives.ie  has in 1901 House 11 Kilmacow (Aghlish Kilkenny)

Thomas Kavanagh 57, Farmer, Ellen wife 56, John 29, Thomas 27, William 20, Michael 17, Mary 22.
I am wondering if Mary was on the 1901 UK Census is it likely that this is her in Irish Census of 1901 unless of course the data was collected in different months and she had moved to the UK. :)

1901 Census was carried out on the same date in England/Wales and Ireland - night of the Sunday  31st March.

Hello,
If she is very important to you, that is a relative, it would be best to get the marriage certificate. You hopefully wouldn't have to clutch at straws then.  :)
Looks as though they married in 1900.

Hi Debu,

that Mary was mentioned earlier in replies 6 and 8. Do you have reason to believe that this is her?
Roy may have the certificate by now.

Hi Heywood, I have just checked my records for Kavanagh's of Kilmacow, and the Mary, daughter of Thomas & Ellen Kavanagh, never married and stayed on the farm in Kilmacow. I will try for another Mary in Mooncoin, Church Records, about  :-*that time. Regards J

HI Heywood, Just checked the records of Kavanagh's of Kilmacow, and the Mary you are looking could be Mary, Born 1873, to Thomas Kavanagh & Mary Dunphy, of Dunkitt, Kilmacow, she is not in the census of 1901 or 1911, Regards J

Mary Kavanagh was my Great Grandmother and was born in Kilmacow in 1873. (Photo Attached) She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Dunphy).  She married a Welshman, Thomas Lewis. They were married in Merthyr Tydfil in 1900 and she settled in Wales for the rest of her life.  She had several brothers, and an elder sister, Brigid (b.1867).  The brothers were James (b.1869).... John (b.1870) .....Nicholas (b.1875) and Patrick (b.1881).  The brothers all served in the Royal Irish Regiment at sometime or another during the Boer War and the 1st World War.  I have found the military records for James and John (known as Johnny) and would love to hear from anyone who may have more information and the 'icing on the cake' would obviously be to find photographs of them in uniform during the late 1880's / early 1900's....... I look forward to hearing from anyone who may be able to assist me.  Many Thanks, Phil.
