Anybody know where Auchleach, Stoneykirk would be on a modern day map?
-
Try looking on the Old Maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html
If you search on Stoneykirk there is a Low Auchleach to the south and to the north side of Ardwell.

I think it must be Low Auchleach, because Auchleach wasn't in Stoneykirk Parish. Trouble is the place I want is called Auchleach on the 1881 Census.

Low Auchleach appears to be one property/farm, but if you zoom in there is also an Auchleach Cottage on the access track to it, nearer the sea.

If catleugh could tell us which of his ancestors lived there, then we might be able to identify where they lived :-\

There are farms known as Auchleach, East and West near Kirkcolm this area is the North Rhins.
Stoneykirk is in the South Rhins where there is another Auchleach near the village of Ardwell.
If you are looking for farms anywhere in Wigtownshire catsleugh they can be found in the Wigtownshire Pages there is a vast amount of information for people researching in that area -- have a look through it
amazing what is available.

My great-grandfather (a ploughman), and great-grandmother were living there according to the 1881 census. They were living there with 6 children, 5 of whom were born in County Down Ireland, where the family originated from, and the youngest was born at Auchleach in August 1879. By April 1886, they had moved to Auchnotteroch, Leswalt, where my grandfather was born.

I've found Low Auchleach - near Ardwell on a modern Ordnance Survey map that I have, but not Auchleach.

The Auchleach cottage you talk about, isn't on my map, but sounds a likely spot. In the census, they were marked as living at "Cot ho. Auchleach.
THANKS EVERYBODY
I always get some good answers when I come on here. (Haven't managed to be of help to anybody else yet. Whenever I try, the questions have already been answered!)

The cottage I mentioned is shown on Old Maps if you zoom in to the west of Low Auchleach

Hi
Are you sure it's Auchleach and not Auchentibbert Cot House? There's a family (James) that looks very much like the one that you've described at Auchentibbert Cot House, Stoneykirk in 1881

Ignore that - I think I've found the Cunningham family in -1881. They're listed as at Cot House, Auchbach*. It's probably a transcription error - will check again.
*Added - definitely Auchleach so would be in the Low Auchleach area

Can't make the cottage out, but noticed a "High Auchleach" to the West of Low Auchenleach.
-
Sorry - my eyesight!! It is Auchenleach Cottage to the east of High Auchleach

Can't make the cottage out, but noticed a "High Auchleach" to the West of Low Auchenleach.
All the large scale (6 ins) 19th century OS maps from the NLS show just ruins at High Auchleach. Low Auchleach seemed to be a mixture of housing and industrial buildings (can't remember what they were now). So, I'd bet on them being nearer to Low Auchleach.

My family farmed low auchleach near ardwell from 1934 to 1991 I know it well there are 2 small cottages at the east side entrance to main farm , next the sea one of which was not built until 1960's .there was an old small workers cottage one third of way up the road between low auchleach and the ruins at high auchleach , this my father converted to calf house/ hay shed, it was last lived in by tractor man who was moved to new built cottage in late 1960's. The old cottage did not even have running water and was very basic, the worker had to use a hand pump down the road . My guess would be the family lived in that old cottage which is now a shed
