Hi Terry

You could look at www.innerleithen.org.uk. It does not mention William Pearce but I am sure that if you sent a message they could give you at least the history of the company and possibly details of the Pearce family.  Good luck!

Hi Terrys,

William Pearce is my husband's great-great grandfather as well.  Our line starts with Alice.  I am waiting to get more info, so when I do I will let you know!  What line does your family descend from?  One of the brothers?  So far I only know of two brothers who came out to Canada, Jim and Ned Pearce.

I think I may be a relative, my grandmother was Isabella Pearce  who married Alexander Learmond in Innerleithen,  they had 11 children. I was told my great uncle was the Pearce who had the lemonade business.   I am also in possession of a picture of the first lemonade lorry in Innerleithen.    I have birth certificates if you wish to view.

Please let me know if this is of any help.

rgds,
Jean

Hello,

I am looking for information of a Petrie family who had connections with the McVeigh family and Peebles. My father, Chester Petrie (born USA 1919) had a picture of "Cousin Hubert McVeigh, R.A.F." standing with a crew of a Hawker Henley target towing plane in WWII.

My gg grandfather, David Petrie (born 3 Sep 1804 Drumhendrie, Parish of Fettercairn, Kincardineshire & died 23 Jul 1877 Braefoot, Carnoustie, Barry, Angus) married Mary Steele "Peebles" [Peeblesshire?] 12 Jun 1830 St. Cyrus Parish, Kincardineshire.

They had a son, James Petrie (born 6 Nov 1841 County Forfar, St. Vigeans Parish "Peebles" [Peeblesshire?],  Arbroath)

Any connections or information would be much appreciated - thank you.

My great great grandfather was frederick pearce who was a son of richard and ann pearce and so a brother of william he was born in chatham in kent, england so william was most probably born there too.  I knew i had some family connection to the pearce lemonade business in Innerleithan but wasn't sure of the link till i read this thread i hope this has been some help.

Not sure if this thread is being tracked any more, but anyways, I too am a descendant of William Pearce. My great-great-grandfather was Winfred Stuart Pearce, married Margaret Lamont (I believe from the Dunoon area, b1871). Their daughter, Grace Jane Pearce, born 1903 in Galashiels was married to Harry Hobson, born 1895 in the Leeds area. My mother, Margaret Hobson, born 1938 in Peebles married William Brian Mather, born 1939 in Galashiels.

After many years, my mother and father are actually now living in Innerleithen and stay just a few blocks from where it all began.

From the stories my father tells, the lemonade business had something to do with the Clapertons, apparently the name Claperton didn't fit on the label so it became Pearce's Lemonade. Not sure how true that is.

My great grandfather William D Pearce was a nephew of William Pearce who owned the Lemonade business from my mother's distant memory she can recall that one of the female Pearce's married into the Clapperton family hence their involvement in the business she can also vaguely remember some of the family visiting her Grandfather in Glasgow in the 1950's.

From what I can make out the Pearce family migrated to Scotland to spread the word of their religion the Catholic Apostolic Church my great great grandfather Frederick brother of William of the Lemonade business was listed in an early census as being a papal preacher at the young age of 14, one of my mothers uncle's remained a member of this church till his death in the early 1980's.

William and Fred's father Richard was the well keeper of St ronan's well innerleithan as far back as 1867 his father also Richard was born in 1775 in the village of East Peckham, Kent hope this info is off interest.

Hi Jean,

I am writing regarding Alexander Learmond and Isabella Pearce, they are the parents of Margaret Learmond, she married a William Lighterness.  William is my relative in my partners tree.

I note in your old post that you stated that Alexander and Isabella were in your tree.  You also said you had photo's of a lemonade lorry and birth certificates.  I was wondering whether you would be interested in forwarding those to me, so that I can add them to my tree??

I have tried to find information about William Pearce & Sons, unfortunately from my search on the net, it seems that the company may have gone into liquidation.  And may have been taken over by another company.  So I have had no luck in trying to contact the company to see if they have any history.

Hoping to hear from you.

Regards

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
My grandparents are Alexander Learmond and Isabella Hilda Pearce (and I suspect the previous poster, Jean, is my cousin actually). As Jean said, they had 11 children, my father being number 7, James (Jim).

What I am not sure about though is the Margaret you mention though the eldest child was Hilda Margaret but I understand she married an Armitage and a Schroder (but I can check those details).

My great grandmother, Isabella's mother, was actually Margaret Pearce (nee Johnston) which is the relationship to the lemonade company.

Best wishes
Stephen

Hi again Cheryl,
From one of your other posts, I realise that you were referring to an earlier generation but with the same names so my comments may not be that helpful now!

Hi Steve,

My Margaret Learmond was born on the 19th October 1735 in Eyemouth, perhaps this date might clarify if this is Hilda Margaret??

Andrew,

Thank you very much for those pics. That's just brilliant. I've never seen pics of my ancestors, that far back. I love it! I've let my sister know they are out there. She too has moved back to Innerleithen and staying just along the road from where the lemonade business used to be.

Glad to be of help only found out these photo's existed a couple of weeks ago and couldn't wait to get them online.  Don't think the photo's had seen the light of day for many a year which was a great pity because they are of a high standard and I hope they will be off interest to many people with Innerleithen connections.  :)

Thought you might be interested. My sister found this picture of Winfred Stuart Pearce and Margaret (nee Lamont). The girl standing behind Margaret is Grace Jane, my grandmother. The picture was probably taken around 1915.

Great photo Gary the Pearce's were a well turned out family we're very lucky to have photo's of our ancestors going so far back.  Did you see this older one of Winfred I think it was possibly your sister(Sandra) that recognised him as a younger man on my flickr page.

Andrew, those pictures are amazing.  William Pearce is my husband's great great grandfather, and we are going to Innerleithen in July to visit his uncle and family  His father was William Clapperton, and ran the lemonade business in a shop behind their house where he still lives!  I can't wait to show my husband the photos, as well as the family in Innerleithen.  We live on Vancouver Island.  So great to see all these - thank you for posting.  It's too bad there aren't names to go with all the photos.  That would make things so much easier wouldn't it?!
I will try to scan a few photos as well and post them.

Dear Joanne - I read all the old posts on Roots chat forum and was thrilled to know other relatives of Wm Pearce are into genealogy.  I see you are on Vancouver Is.  There were 3 brothers who went to Canada - you have said Jim and Ned and also Richard (Dick) Richard died whilst travelling - he died of haemorrhaging of the lungs on 02 Oct 1909 age 35, unmarried I believe. Altogether I believe there were 8 sons and 2 daughters.  Boys - Frederick William (Bill), Francis George (Geordie), Richard (Dick), Winfred Stuart (Fred), Edward John (Ned), James Arthur (Arthur), Charles Albert (Charlie) and Joseph Henry (Harry). Girls were Alice Annie (Elsie) b 1869; and Mary Elizabeth who died in infancy 02 Oct 1878 (same day different year as Dick)  I have a photo with all of the family but Mary Elizabeth - although Francis George has been added in - it looks like it is taken in bat 1890's.   The family gravestone includes  -  Sarah died 29th May 1912 (My own father's 8th birthday, William died 1914 and sons Dick in 1909, Joseph Henry who died at Kilsyth 03 Dec 1912 aged 26 and Mary Elizabeth in 1878.  1912 was a very big and sad year for the family as Sarah died in May, Francis George (Geordie) and wife Isabella (nee Lumsden) and family set off on 14 June for Australia and then later Joseph Henry (Harry) died in December.                                                                                           William and Sarah are my great grandparents so I am one generation behind you!  My Grandfather was Francis George Pearce (B. 1870) who came out to Australia in 1912 and settled in Victoria.  They developed orchards in the Orrvale district with other new settlers.
Love to hear from you and any of the others posting - Cheers from a rellie in OZ - Isabel nee Pearce
