Title: Mini Meet (Melbourne)
Post by: Wiggy on Friday 24 May 13 07:25 BST (UK)
Just seeing all those others arranging themselves a day out . . . .  8) ;D ;D

I wonder if anyone in or around Melbourne is interested in a meet?   Mid June to Mid July a goer for anyone?

After arranging a family meet yesterday, I know just the place now - no view at all, but very easy access from Melbourne's Southern Cross Station - the people were nice and the room we had was quiet and we had it to ourselves.  We all arrived by public transport and then walked back to the station together afterwards - we had the room for four hours and though the menu didn't run to anything exotic, I believe we could have had 'afters' if we'd asked.

Anyhow this is a suggestion to float abroad.

Anyone think this is a good idea?   :)

Any other suggestions close to public transport are very welcome.

Wiggy

I think that's a great idea Wiggy ;D With the weather you get in Mid June to Mid July you should have it in a park by the Yarra, you know,, get a bit of Sunshine. You should get swamped by offers by two or three. :P

UNKNOWN ;D

I can see you know our weather - NOT!! (Or you are being rather mean !!   And I just know that isn't you!!   :P ::) ;D)

I've no idea how many RCers even live in or around Melbourne, so it may not be a goer at all!  - and some who do may possibly try to escape north for Winter.

Like the sound of yours though.  There probably are places with views around our city - but I know so little about Melbourne I wouldn't know - and also this one is so good for trains:  country buses also pull in at Southern Cross.  So it really is ideal transport-wise.

UN-citified!    ;D

Hi Wiggy ... I attended a Mini Meet last month in Sydney and it was just terrific ... what fun and laughter we had ... we didn't need a view, just a cooling cocktails and yummy deserts was the icing on the cake!!  I will be in Melbourne 7-12 June so if it's happening thing then, and I'm not engrossed in your wonderful shops  ;D  would love to come along.  Bonnie

Got a feeling it would be later than that Bonnie  - pity 'cos you'd be very welcome - (it might have been just you and me) - I mean that's only a fortnight away - and I won't be in Melbourne then!   :D

 - I don't know if there are many people in Melbourne who would be interested -

The sound of the one in Sydney and the planning in Newcastle sound like fun so I thought putting out a feeler might be worth it.   We shall see.

Just keeping the interstate rivalry alive and well ;D I really hope you can put a successful meet together, even if it is in Melbourne ::) ;D

Anyway we have to keep the post at the top of the board so everyone knows its ON IN MELBOURNE, come on you MEXICANS get behind it. 8)

Something tells me it is going to be a non-starter!

Never mind - you never know if you don't try!   ;)

I think it was the mention of a quiet room - (It doesn't mean you can't be noisy as we had the whole area to ourselves   :D
- but we needed quiet as we had two fairly hard of hearing people in our midst so it suited us!    :))

Don't listen to Neil!     ;D

It is just a sort of get together with other Rootschatters living in the same area, who might like to get together for a meal and meet and talk about anything, everything and possibly even family history    ;)

Some RootsChatters "talk" to each other here for years -  on various topics, by PM or in the chatroom -  without ever getting to meet personally.

A mini-meet is a great possibility to meet "the person behind the avatar" :)

Australia is a bit far for me, but I do help to organise regular mini-meets in Berlin for a german genealogy forum.  So next time any one is in Berlin, Germany  ....  ;D

Well that makes four - so how about I book a Saturday lunchtime at the Grand Hotel RAB Restaurant at 33 Spencer Street  Melbourne - any preferences for a Weekend - I am thinking end of July early August

Say - - - 20th or 27th July or 3rd August.

You tell me your preferences and we'll go with the most popular.  When a day is fixed we may find other who will join us!

If you state your preferences as soon as possible I will ring the place and make sure it is available.

So at the moment we have Tedscout, Leonie/Cmore, redmr2red/....and me, Wiggy.

come in spinner - any more takers?   ;)

Have also heard from Leonie - any of those dates for her too.

Good oh - do you have an easier name Redmr2red - or will we just call you Red?   ;D

And I am the same  - so I will go for the British spirit of compromise and go for the middle date - 27th July.    Will ring and book tomorrow and then ask then to hang fire on how many of us will be there

Right, line up with your expressions of interest!  Lots of historic photos of old Melbourne railways  around the walls - that should get us started!     ;D ;D 8)

Wiggy   :)

So we have, thus far . . . . . .

Saturday 15th June is Hamburg night so come wearing a sailor's cap, or perhaps a Top Hat with Sweep's Brush a la Hummel.   There'll be a lot Tzig a Tzag a Tzig a Tzag Oi Oi Oi.

Can't promise anything at moment as we have another function at Teutonia on 27th July - Winter Dance.

This week it's Clover Cottage, Berwick on Friday evening (celebrating my 80th which is the day before, the 13th), then as already mentioned Hamburg Night on next Saturday.

33 Spencer St is odd.    I get 33 everywhere I look and its been going on virtually daily for many years - even in Roman numerals and always on TV on Tanks, car reg's, door numbers, footy Guernsey's, just everywhere.

counting down - just one week to go - and here's hoping next Saturday isn't weather like this - though to be fair being holed up in a nice warm restaurant getting to know new people isn't such a bad way to spend a day like today!

I've checked with the RAB Restaurant and they are expecting about a dozen of us, so see you there, folks.

I am looking forward to it I am!     ;)

Having not heard from several of you for a while - (understandably) - I am hoping you are all still on board!

It isn't too late to jump on board if you wish!!  just let me know!

Just finding Train and Tram timetables - all sorted now - they don't make it easy - not for me they don't - or maybe it is just me!!!    ;D ;D

Think I will come by tram - (and knit or crochet, like a little old lady, all the way!!   or maybe not!   ::))   I aim to get there about 11-ish - give or take - ;)

Morning Melbourne meeters!

You wouldn't believe this . . . . . . . well Ted might . . . .   :D

Gus decided that he wasn't going to meet other bears wearing only a bow so I had to get up in the dark this morning and create him a fancy jacket.   He is thinking he is going to be beau of the meet now - but I've warned him there will be some pretty stiff competition.   ::) ;D ;D   He also insists on taking his mascot bear made by Mare - so you will be represented Mare.

See you there tomorrow - the rain is forecast to have passed by then - hooray!!   I mean I'm loving the rain  - but better if it just doesn't rain tomorrow!!

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Wiggy   :D

Looks like you had a great meet.  :)

Please could I ask for names to match to faces in the pics above?  It's always interesting to see people you usually only know as names on a forum.  PM would be fine if you don't want to go public on who is who.  Just tell me which photo you're putting the names to.  8)

Try it Judith - you never know - some others might come out of the woodwork!

I didn't have much interaction with anyone in this group other than Yvonne and on occasions Morrie - so didn't know they were local - give it a go - if it doesn't work - bad luck - but you won't know until you try!   :D :D

And this morning, due to giving someone a lift home from Church, I found that there is a Dead Persons Society in our suburb and I'll probably go with her next month.

I was talking about Love rellies and how difficult it was searching for the word Love in a Trove search.

I am researching the Love family for a close friend whose Dad (deceased) was Arthur Henry Love and changed his name to Alfred Henry Brown.  There is a couple of threads about him on RC.

We now need to understand why he felt the need to change his name and never tell his Brown family about it.

It was great to meet you,

Post by: redmr2red on Sunday 28 July 13 05:03 BST (UK)
Arthur Henry Love arrived Sydney 1927 from the UK. We have no further information about him until he appeared as Alfred Henry Brown in victoria in 1939.  There is an Arthur Henry Love in ACT electoral rolls in 1928 & 1930, but I have some doubts it is the same person. So it is possible he was in Eden but not born there.

I don't want to hi-jack the Mini Meet.  Perhaps take this thread to another post, or pm.

Thanks for the link Yvonne!   Hooray for you - I couldn't have given you all that info!  Do you attend?
 - I didn't realise the Bundoora meeting was THE meeting for Victoria!!  Looks interesting doesn't it!!

There is a bus running very close to that hall - and the 86 Bundoora RMIT tram isn't too far away either.    Neither is the Hursbridge line train station of Watsonia.

Don't worry about hijacking the thread Red - it won't go much more anyway - We've met now!!    ;D

Hi All,

Many thanks to all those who attended yesterday, particularly to Wiggy who organised the Meet.  I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new friends and over a great meal, in nice surroundings too.

The only downer of the day for me is how do I explain the teddies to my big kids, particularly Little Ted who has a very large purse for a little teddy and has the power to command his own railway platform!

For those interested in Love, there is no Love in my family tree (please be careful how you read that)

Wiggy, I might catch-up with you at a DPS meeting one day as it is not far from me via the Ring Road.

Yvonne, I have discovered I have something in common with your man - I was watching the car racing too on 7Mate this afternoon,

To add to my story, I moved from Sydney to Melbourne in 1974.  Also I have updated my profile with a real photo that used to appear in the Sydney daily press on a regular basis.

Definitely looking forward to next year's meet.

Regards to all

John   :)

It was great to meet you also,
yes it was very enjoyable meeting everyone & swapping family history stories & the food was great too, the time went too quickly.

Yes Wiggy did well,  :D

The car racing was quite eventful with blown tyres & the car that was the meat in the sandwich,  ;D

I am ever so very glad to hear the positive feed back - thank you all.    :D :)

I must admit to a degree of apprehension before hand  - just hoping it would all be well     :-\

- then when we arrived and found the advertised menu wasn't anything like what we were given on the day was a bit of a trick - considerably more expensive for people.   :o    I felt a bit embarrassed about that - but as it worked out it didn't matter at all!    And it as very nice food that's for sure.

I rang last night to say thanks and to pass on our appreciation to Maki in particular - they were very busy and said they'd ring back - that hasn't happened yet . . . . . . . ::) ;)

It certainly is a good central spot and handy for all forms of transport.

Post by: tedscout on Monday 29 July 13 04:22 BST (UK)
It was perfect for all types of transport. Will be even better if they put an airport at Dockland (That was a dumb idea I heard on the radio this morning).

The parking was fantastic and 2 gentlemen were amazed when I gave them my ticket when I moved my car. $15 all day was a very reasonable price and so so so close to the venue.

Leonie and John and anyone else thinking of visiting/joining the DPS meeting . . . . . my friend takes her own teabag!!  and everyone has to bring their own cup/mug apparently - At least that's what I think she was saying!   ;) (Coffee sachet coming up!)

We all think a rail line to the airport would be a wonderful idea - everyone except those who live in the proposed route probably  - might have to move house - also those who have to pay for it might have second thoughts!    ;D

What a good scout you are Ted!  Very kind!  :)
