Does anyone remember Cardross Park home ? it was a Childrens home a came from in 1961
-
In the 1940`s Cardross Park Home, was a convalescent home for sick children, my late brother was sent there for two weeks after spending time in Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow
-
Cardross Park childrens home was where I was abandoned for a few years in the early 1970's. I remember a big sandstone building with a long driveway? Is that right? What is the building now? I'd like to take a look. Any pics of it anyone?

I was there for a while in the early 70's as a very young child. Cardross Park Childrens home is the name from my past memory's. I have a vague memory of a large sandstone building with a very long drive up to it...? Is the building there now?

Hi Louise
Welcome to RootsChat :)
See you have found the other forum with further info here www.topix.com/forum/uk/argyll-and-bute/TV29TK1LVP25JRPRT which provides another name for it, the Bloomhill Children's Home.
From that thread and the mention of a recent property sale you have www.scotlandshomes.co.uk/flats/for-sale/dumbarton-west-dunbartonshire/g82/3023

Hi
There were two children's homes in Cardross. Cardross Park was for babies and very young children and Bloomhill cared for school-age children. Cardross Park as mentioned has been converted into flats and Bloomhill became a care home for the elderly. isk

Do you know the name of this book Rosie ?
-
Not very sure of the name of the book but it is easy to find it is in the Helensburgh Archives section on the bottom floor ...or if you ask one of the girls at the desk they will help you they are very helpful
Rosie :)
Very sad story by the way
-
Thank you Rosie , if I'm in Helensburgh I will certainly go to the library & look for this book 😃
Yes it is a sad story , Myself & the other 2 youngest weren't at Cardross park home for long , we were Fostered by a family in Inverness in 1963 , my real mother remained in hospital care until she died in 1995 ( she had psychiatric problems )& went to Bellsdyke hospital Larbert . I went to visit her around 1991 & visited her a few times after that also met up with my 3 older brothers in the early 80s . Sadly as we were separated at such a young age we were like 2 different family's .
-
Hi I worked in children's home cardross as a cook in the early 1990s
-
Hi more info its now called cardross park mansion google it there's a good picture of it see if its the same one
-
Yes I visited Cardross park mansion a few years ago . The whole surrounding area is totally transformed with new housing . I'd visited Cardross park home several years, before when it was deserted & with fields of overgrown grass
-
Unfortunately Cardross Park Home was demolished some years ago.I would be grateful for any pictures or any other information about the children's home as my husband was there from 1959 until 1964 .

Sorry I tried to download image of Cardross park mansion , this was once the children's home it has been converted in to flats & has been for a number of years .
-
Thankyou so much..I am grateful for this information.Clearly I have been misinformed and happy that this beautiful building is still standing.Do you know where l can find more information about Cardross Park or how I might find out online.
-
This is me outside Cardross park mansion back in 2011
-
Askull sorry I don't really have much more information about Cardross park home , I was there when I was a baby in 1960 to 1962 along with my brother & sister . My 3 older brothers were in a children's home nearby.. Broomhill .I have searched online for more information on both these homes but unfortunately didn't come up with much . Cardross park Mansion / home is indeed a grand building I felt quite emotional when I visited .
-
My husband was there with his younger brother from 1959 until 1964 when they were both adopted. So you were there within that time frame. He remembers white tiles with green borders and a dorm with many beds set so closely together that you had to almost climb over to get to your allocated bed.He also remembers a Miss Pollock .Does this sound familiar to you ?
-
Wow ! Askull that is interesting information !
I have no recollection of what the home looked like from inside but a Ms Pollock came to visit us after we were placed in a foster home in Inverness , I remember a Mr Gallacher as well . They would come to see us every 6 months . This went on until we reached 16 or 18 years old I can't quite remember . If we had been adopted there wouldn't have been any visits . My sister seems to remember a big globe of the world inside the entrance & fields around the building .
-
Do you know if Roman Catholic nuns ran this home around the First World War ? I've been trying to locate the orphanage which my late father and his two younger brothers were in for a few years .
He wouldn't talk about it, just said it was something he wished to forget.
All he would say was that he remembered crossing the bridge across the Leven into Dumbarton in an attempt to escape
-
About a quarter of a mile from Cardross Park Home there is a road leading onto Carman Hill. This takes you to the small village of Renton where there is a bridge which takes you to the Industrial Estate and into Dumbarton.I feel that this would be the quickest and safest route for your father to take.As there would have been very little traffic or people around apart from hillwalkers.I have no knowledge of Nun's running the Home but I will try to find out .I hope this information is helpful to you :)
-
Sorry..Omitted to point out that the bridge crosses the River Leven ;)
-
Sorry Askull, the route you suggest is highly unlikely. At that time the Industrial Estate was the grounds of Strathleven House, owned by the Crum-Ewing family. They did not like intruders , in fact the present foot bridge over the Leven was only built after the grounds were bought and made into an industrial estate in 1947
-
Sorry..misread your post..First World War not second ! Yes I am aware of the history of Strathclyde House..The Renton Bridge was indeed built in 1952 to accommodate access to the Industrial Estate..
-
Does anyone know of a home in Cardross that in the 50's was known as Queen's Park House?? Thanks.
-
Hi familyquest
Welcome to RootsChat :)
The closest I can see so far, from the 1920-1 MacDonalds Scottish Directory and Gazetteer, is:
Duncan, Dr E., Queen's Park House, Langside Road
https://archive.org/stream/macdonaldsscot192122edin/macdonaldsscot192122edin_djvu.txt
Later years show hospital connections at this site (Victoria Infirmary).

Thanks a lot, Monica, but the documentation I have explicitly mentions Cardross, which I think would have come under Dumbarton rather than Glasgow.
-
I can't see any further reference unfortunately, other than the Glasgow ref. to it :-\
Some info and links which you could contact here www.childrenshomes.org.uk/DunbartonshireCC/

Thanks again, Monica. Much appreciated.

Happy New Year
I am researching the Beattie family tree. My Grandad was David Beattie & he was born at the poorhouse 50 Townend Road, Dumbarton on the 30th June 1910. His mum Maggie died in 1918 & his dad John died in 1919.
Their 3 eldest children Maggie, John & Jessie were brought up by Cardross Parish Council until they were of age.. David & James were In foster care in Balfron. Hugh started off in foster care before going to quarriers orphanage.
I am assuming the three eldest were in Bloomhill childrens home & I have enjoyed seeing all your posts and comments.

Hi, I a looking for pictures of the Children's home and of the Staff. My Aunt Catherine Mitchell was the Matron of the home for many years until she retired. I look forward to hearing from anyone, kind regards Don Mitchell

would anyone know surnames of staff in the Lomond unit of Cardross assessment centre in the mid 80`s first names John and Duncan vitally important to trace the surnames.
-
Yes there were two children's homes in Cardross Bloomhill and Cardrosss park, Bloomhill was for children, matron at one time was a Mrs Muir, it became a care home and is now unused. Cardross Park was a children's home with children of various ages, is now flats with houses built on its surrounding land. I can see the building close from where i am sitting.
-
Cardross was used as an “assessment” centre for young people and was part of Strathclyde Regional Council’s social work services….It was managed by Glasgow City Council (forSRC). It closed at the time of council reorganisation in 1996.
