Title: Look up, Rookwood Cemetery..
Post by: kimmiesdad on Sunday 02 June 13 21:52 BST (UK)
Hi. I am trying to find information Re: Ellen Mansfield who was buried in the Church of England section in Rookwood Cemetery on June 29 1916 and also if her husband, Ephraim Mansfield is buried in Rookwood.
I have found out that the information on BDM re: their marriage,  is incorrect as it has Ellens maiden name as being Asekeller and it appears as though that name doesn't exist anywhere. It also shows that they were married in Erskinville NSW and no one at the church can help me verify what her maiden name was as I was told there are no records at the church from the year they were married.
I recently found Ellen's funeral notice which was in the Sydney Morning Herald dated June 29 1916 and it showed her as being the wife of Mr E Mansfield but like Ellen, after 10 years of searching I cannot find any trace as his death, hence my question, is he also in Rookwood.
Can anyone help..
Graham

Hi Kimmiesdad,

George Ephraim Mansfied was born at Rylston NSW  ref # 19885/1876. The son of William and Elizabeth Mansfield. He married Under his 2nd name to Your Ellen Asekeller.

He married her under his middle name of Ephraim but his death is recorded at Concord Sydney in 1949 under his correct 1st name the ref # is 11269/1949.

I will look and see if they are buried together.

Neil

3980/1899    MANSFIELD    EPHRAIM    ......    ASEKELLER    ELLEN

I think the other may be a possible brother to William Mansfield as his marriage is 1869 as George Ephraim Mansfield wasn't born utill 1876.

Of course it could be the same Ephraim Mansfield with two marriages as you have. I saw that earlier marriage and dismissed it ::)

Hi guys and thanks for your replies but the George Ephraim you mention is not the Ephraim I am looking for.. Ephraim was George Ephraims uncle and was born in England. He was just a lad when he arrived here with his family, George (father) and Marie(mother) formely Hurst..

It would have been better to post on the original thread and or at least answer the last post on the earlier thread.

Sorry Neil but I am new at this and don't understand threads etc. The questions I have asked previously were asking for info about Ephraim and Ellen but the look up I am asking for about rookwood cemetery is to try and find out what inscriptions if any are on her headstone if she indeed has one.. My apologies if I have gone about it the wrong way..

Do you know who all these people are?  Surely we can work out her correct surname from this.

Well, a memorial for Ellen in 1917 is from her daughter and daughter's husband "E., W., WILLCOX".

The daughter was Emily - her funeral notices (AKINES has changed to AKINS, and we are back to WILLCOCKS).

Some confusing relationships in there.

...and I can't find her death reg.  :P

Just a thought but i wonder if a email to the cemetery could be worthwhile. I have had terrific help from some cemeteries so hopefully Rookwood might be the same.

The name is AKINS in Emily's funeral notice.  This one maybe?

Marriage

4633/1914
AKINS, ROY
WILLCOX, ETHEL G
at SYDNEY

Births

27993/1895
HAWKINS, ETHEL G
Mother: EMILY
WATERLOO

37501/1892
HAWKINS, FLORENCE M
Mother: EMILY
WATERLOO

Also mentioned in Emily's funeral notices?

Marriage

7197/1910
MCKIRDY, THOMAS J
WILLCOX,    FLORENCE

So have we established that Ellen's surname was HAWKINS at some stage prior to marrying Ephraim?

Emily's burial indictates she was born around 1861, so no spring chicken (well, at least not a young unmarried girl) when she had Ethel and Florence.

So little Ellen ASEKELLER (Nee BENNETT) Married possibly several times prior to marriage at AGE 58/59 in 1899 to Ephraim MANSFIELD and was 76YO at her death in 1916.

I don't know why but something tells me it may be important to find who her previous husband/'s were and when they became deceased. ::) MAYBE.

Mentioned on one of the linked threads Neil ;)  Along with the census info I typed up ::)

If she is the dau of Wm and Ann BENNETT on the 1851 census, then born 1840 reg district Abingdon which covers Garford, Berkshire.  Possibly not accurate with her age on the marriage cert.

SAG have already transcribed many registers as mentioned in the link to the State Library of NSW.

Hi Cando.. I am a little confused.. In one of your posts yesterday you mention Emma Mansfield buried 20 June 1916 and I think you said that Emma was your mum and then you posted again and said "typo" should be Ellen..
I called Rookwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon enquiring about Ellen and I was told that Ellen is indeed buried there but the date of her burial was June 29 1916.. Interestingly, they also told me that there are two others buried with her at the same site. Can you enlighten me at all???

Excuse me butting in - Cando is not related, she is a very clever researcher on the forum.

The "My mother" is the inscription on the grave of Ellen.  On  the gravestone it says ...

Ellen MANSFIELD
20 June 1916  72 years
My Mother

Emily WILLCOCKS
11 Feb 1922  61 years
My wife

William WILLCOCKS
