We have 2 photos dated late 1860's - 1870 where the subjects are wearing scarves with interesting patterns. The photos may have been sent from NZ to USA ... Please have a look and share your thoughts.
Thanks, Kate

Hi
I don't think they are Maori patterns. I have these thoughts:
Sami (Lapp) tribes from northern Scandinavia (famous for their weaving)
Central European weaving
Bolivian backstrap weaving
This monograph on Inkle weaving shows some different types of weaving, including Navajo Indian.

The pictures of Sami people show some with the darker hair and round faces that the wee boys have.
Perhaps a doting grandma left behind in Scandinavia or central Europe wove the scarves and sent them to the family who have reciprocated and sent a picture back to the home country.
