Title: Robert Anderson b1876 Selkirk - moved to Honolulu - 'Honolulu Bob'
Post by: KitCarson on Tuesday 11 June 13 21:00 BST (UK)
Hi, I've just been advised that the ancester of 'Honolulu Bob' is visiting the 'Selkirk Common Riding' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Riding   in Selkirk, Scotland, this coming Friday 14th and I understand he may be my husband's relative (Robert Mailer Anderson?)

http://www.selkirkweekendadvertiser.co.uk/lifestyle/entertainment/robert-is-colonials-choice-1-2850609

My daughter has found a few news items where he discusses his heritage, and I can certainly find a number of ship passenger manifests showing an ancester, Robert (b 1876) between 1907 - 1935 (and sometimes a wife called Margaret from Gattonside in the Scottish Borders).

My question is that Robert b1876 appears to have had a least one child RC Anderson, as on 23 Sept 1925 when he and Margaret are travelling from Vancouver BC to Honolulu on the RMMS Aorangi they list their son (RC Anderson) as residing at 2625 Avenue St, Honolulu.

A quote from one of the newspaper articles "Honolulu Bob was Robert Anderson, who emigrated to Hawaii in 1898.

An accountant employed by the Honolulu Iron Works, he returned to Selkirk in 1937 with his wife, Margaret, and was Colonial Society chairman from 1940-46.

He and his wife eventually moved to California and Margaret died in 1949, with Honolulu Bob passing away three years later."

This is my first real foray into US records and I would very much appreciate any assistance you can give.

Thanks in anticipation, Kit (Edinburgh, Scotland)

The California death index shows one Margaret Anderson born in "other country" who died in 1949 and several Robert Andersons born in "other country" who died from 1951 to 1953.

Depending on the county where they died, there may be a death certificate available at FamilySearch in the California County Birth and Death Records, 1849-1994 database:

Hi Sandra and Erato

Thank you so much for the information.  Not long back from work and have received all your posts.  So much to take in and to take forward.

I understand from a close relative that Robert Mailer Anderson and an entourage of close family are in Selkirk, where he is undertaking his duties as 'Colonial Standard Bearer' at the Common Riding.  What a tradition to be part of!  Lets hope the weather is kind.

I very much look forward to building on your research, which I very much appreciate.

Kit

BTW - I aim to use Family Search more often, although I really don't find it very user friendly (but maybe I need to practice?)

The problem is that you are mentioning living people which is against Rootschat Policy.

You can find some tips for searching for living people on these RootsChat topics:

Would someone be willing to share the information they have on Honolulu Bob? The Robert Anderson born on 18 Feb 1906 is my relative, Robert Catton Anderson, and I am trying to find out information on him. Thank You!

Happy New Year Giselle70 and welcome to RootsChat.

I can certainly give you some information on the Anderson family taken from my research, as Robert 1876 is my husband's 1st cousin 3 x removed.  The common ancestors being John (1837) and Christina Dodds (1835).

Before we can correspond directly, you will need to make 3 posts and then we will be able to talk via personal message (PM).

It would be great to find out what you may know about Robert Catton Anderson too.

Robert's wife Margaret's maiden name was Dickson. The Dickson family at that time lived in Kittyfield, Gattonside, Melrose, Scotland. My grandfather, Walter, was Margaret's brother.
Robert's brother John has written an unpublished autobiography of which I've read parts which apply to the Dickson side of the family. I know some of the history but would love to know more.

Robert M  Anderson (Honolulu Bob) born 1876 was the Selkirk Colonial Standard Bearer in 1913. He was my grandmothers brother in law.

Hi Catmel, great that you have been in contact.

Yes, Robert did marry Margaret Scott Dickson didn't he.  My relationship is through my husband and is via Honolulu Bob's Grandfather, George Anderson b.1816.

If you make another post, we can continue this conversation via Private Message (PM) if you like.

Unfortunately, I can't give you anything on the Dickson side, but have a wee bit on the Anderson's.

Not only was Honolulu Bob a flag bearer, but his grandson came over last summer to perform the same honour!

We live in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Where are you?

Kit

Hi Kit,
The autobiography is written by John Anderson (Honolulu Bob's brother). The parts of the book I've read apply to a time when the Anderson's were home on holiday and were going to visit Mrs Dickson (my great grand mother) around the spring of 1913.
I know someone who has done the family history of the Andersons and has it all written down.
It was Bob's Andersons great grandson who did the colours in 2013 not his grandson.
I'm down in the borders.
Can photos be published here?

Honolulu Bob (Robert Anderson) was brother in law to my grandfather and grandmother (Walter and Janet Dickson). That would make him my mother's uncle, therefore my great uncle.

Hi Catmel
Sorry that I've not been in touch again before now.  Have been busy at work but have seen some of your more recent posts.  As I didn't have information to hand, i didn't want to post incorrect information again (like RMA being grandson rather than Great Grandson!).

You could post photo's here, but I'm not sure too many people would be interested if it's to do with our Dickson or Anderson line  :D

I'll PM you and we can continue to be in contact that way if you want.

(I've now sent you a PM and I hope it gets to you)

Hello,

I am so pleased to find this fascinating correspondence regarding my great grandfather Robert Anderson (Honolulu Bob). I am Margaret Anderson (my great grandmother's married name!) and (*) Anderson is my younger brother. Great Uncle Robert Catton Anderson has remained a family mystery, and I never met him although I too am the middle sibling and often give that a particular status.

I am coming to Selkirk for the Common Riding this summer with my 17 year-old daughter, (*). I'm hoping to be joined by my older brother (*)Anderson, and I spoke with my younger brother and talked about the possibility of him joining us for this awesome opportunity to see Selkirk together.  This will be my second time to Selkirk. My last visit was over twenty years ago with my cousin Charlotte, and we stayed with my cousin Rosalie. I had a fantastic time and can't wait to be there once again with my daughter and nieces and nephews.

I am registered on Ancestry.com and recently joined Family Tree/GedMatch to explore my Anderson roots. It is so nice to put some of the pieces of the family puzzle together.

Well, I didn't mean to write so much, but I wanted to let you all know how exciting it is to have read your postings!

Much thanks,

Margaret

P.S

Giselle, are we cousins?

Hello Margaret,

Great to hear from you and sorry that I haven't been in a position to reply earlier but work has been in the way.

Admin duties first!  I think you will need to post another couple of times if you want to communicate direct with me or anyone else (Giselle70?) through the Private Message (PM) system.  Just be aware that you shouldn't post information on living people, as this could compromise them.  (I did exactly the same earlier on this thread!).

Giselle70 has been in touch with me by PM and I would hope that she would also like to communicate with you when she get the email alert.

Anyway, so nice to hear that you'll be in Selkirk again after 20 years.  I know that RMA was there a while ago and we are in email contact whilst he is in his most recent home.  I just missed out on joining him for a cocktail in SF when visiting there last April!!  Work always gets in the way  :-\

So, if you would like to post a couple of messages, they don't need to say very much if you don't want them to, then we can then chat privately if you would prefer.

It's my husband's line and our link is through George Anderson 1816 Selkirk and his children.  We are also on Ancestry if you would like to find us.

Kit

Kit,

Sorry to have let so much time lapse. Plans have changed and I will not be able to come to Scotland for the Common Riding. So disappointing, but I am making plans for coming the following summer. I would like to communicate more so I will try to send a few short notes.

Thank you so much Kit for your lovely message and I look forward to making more connections soon.

Best,

Margaret

Margaret, I too must apologise for not responding sooner.  Far too many other life events getting in the way.  What a pity that you won't be in Selkirk this summer although I'm sure it won't be too long before we meet.

Feel free to get in touch via PM when you can and we can learn about our family connections.

Dear catmel,

My wife and I have been searching her mums family in the Scottish Borders and see from your old posts relating to Honolulu Bob, you are related to his wife,Margaret Dickson. My wife's granny was Janet Dickson (Boog) and her mum was Ellen(Helen) Dickson, who we believe  was Margaret & Walter's sister.Thier parents were John and Margaret Dickson.
Are you able to confirm this and or provide info on the Dickson side please?
Also my wife has old pictures of Margaret Anderson, Honolulu Bob and their 3 children.
Thank you

Hello! Margaret Anderson was my great grandmother and I would very much love to see any photos of her, my great grandfather, Honolulu Bob and their three children - one of which is my grandfather, Kenneth Anderson. Would you be able to share the photos that your wife has of them? My father and aunt would very much like to see them!

Many thanks,
