Hello all on Rootschat,
I have been searching for further information on my G.G.Grandfather, Thomas Grierson. He became a ship's captain and plied his trade in the British Merchant Service in Foreign Trade. He married Elsie-Ellen Susanna Weilbach in South Africa in 1847 and they travelled the oceans finally settling in Semaphore, South Australia. He died 30 September 1883.
Can anyone help me with his parentage? Family search had one Thomas listed as having John Grierson and Barbara Sloan as his parents, however I would like to find out more.
Thankyou
Chris

In addition to Thomas in 1814, John and Barbara had the following children bpt in Buittle 1800-1820:
6 Jan 1806 James
4 Oct 1808 John Barber
22 Sept 1809 David
18 July 1811 Margaret
22 July 1812 Agnes
Do any of these names occur in Thomas's children?

Thankyou wozzle and Gadget, sorry about not replying before.
Family search does have the same birth and baptism dates.
They also have
James
John Barber
David
Margaret
Agnes
Thomas (my GGgrandfather)
Adam
These names do appear in the family descendants. He had 5 daughters
Ellen Susannah (mother's name)
Barbara (Grandmother's name)
Agnes
Anne
Mary Elizabeth
It is John Grierson and Barbara Sloan which I cannot find out anything about. Ancestry seems to not have anything official.
It makes things a little confusing... Thomas Grierson also has a cousin "Thomas Grierson" who is also a ship's captain. Mariners in the family!!
Cheers,
Chris

Balmaclellan MIs have been published by the D&G FHS. There is a large stone for John Grierson who died 1841 (pre-census) and his wife Barbara Sloan who died 1846 and various of their children. The entry starts "Erected by John GRIERSON late in Burnfoot of Kells" and mentions an Adam Grierson Esq of Burnfoot who died in 1813 aged 67.
John Grierson husband of Barbara Sloan left a will of 23 pages which can be downloaded from scotlandspeople
GRIERSON JOHN 19/04/1842 ESQUIRE, OF FORMISTON, SOMETIME RESIDED AT BANKS, THEREAFTER AT NUNWOOD, PARISH OF TERREGLES, SPOUSE OF BARBARA SLOAN KIRKCUDBRIGHT SHERIFF COURT SC16/41/12
