Title: Bottisham Lode
Post by: Hampshire Lass on Sunday 16 June 13 17:53 BST (UK)
I have an Emily Watts, who on all the censuses says she was born in Bottisham Lode, Cambridgeshire, in 1850.

She is the daughter of John Watts and Hannah Shipp.  I'm wondering if anyone has access to baptism records which may contain extra information. All her life she has only had the one christian name but I would like to know if she is in fact Emily E M Watts and am hoping that baptism records would confirm this either way.

She marries a James Butler and on the 1911 they're living in Sussex. The only likely death record for her is in 1937 and the name is Emily E M Butler......other than that the "little green leaf" and some other online trees lead me to a death in Birmingham....which is very out of the blue.

She is on a tree I'm doing for a friend and I'm being mean in on her behalf in trying not to send for too many certificates.

Many thanks in anticipation.  :)

James appears to have died in 1916 but I can't see any other death that fits apart from the 1937 one.

She was a bit old to have re-married after James died but I checked anyway and nothing shown in Sussex

Yes that's what I thought too but I can't seem to decide with Emily. There are a few possibilities. The 1937 being favourite, except for the extra initials. The "flashing green leaf" suggestion of Birmingham seems strange as a lot of her family were in Sussex by then and I can't see any connection with Birmingham.

I have the Bottisham baptism records, but I'm away for this coming weekend.  If you still need the info I'll be happy to look them up probably on Monday 8th July.

That's very kind of you Brenda, I would appreciate that  :)

As far as I can see Emily had 9 siblings:- Susan 1856, Eliza 1858, John 1859, Ann 1861, Phebe 1863, William 1866, Avis 1868, Hannah 1871 and Flower 1873  (love the name Flower  :))

I haven't resolved the problem of her death but the 1937 looks likely. It's recorded as Emily E M Butler and one thought I did have was that since her name was Emily maybe she was known as Em and when her death was recorded the person registering it maybe said "Emily...Em...Butler" and the registration officer wrote Emily E M Butler

That's what's known as clutching at straws  ::)   I guess if that was the case they would have written Emily M Butler.

Therefore it would be great if you find a baptism for Emily E M Watts 1850 Bottisham Lode  :)
Thank you for the kind offer

Thanks Brenda, that's really kind of you. :)

It's strange that Emily wasn't baptised till she was about 19 but obviously none of them were baptised as babies.

Off out now but thank you so much for that useful info and your kind offer of more help if needed. I'll put this on the tree and see where I go from there  :)

There seemed to be quite a few mass baptisms for some families, like the vicar came round every so often and rounded them all up!  I don't think it's that uncommon for rural families to not visit church very often.
